Neuroendocrine Tumors: Location, Treatment and Symptom Control
Neuroendocrine Tumors: Location, Treatment and Symptom Control
Neuroendocrine tumors and carcinoid tumors are rare, affecting only a fraction of a percentage of the US population. However, the symptoms of neuroendocrine disease can be debilitating for the individuals who develop it. Neuroendocrine tumors are difficult to locate and remove, in part because they often grow very slowly. So, unfortunately, many medical centers aren't equipped to treat these rare diseases. In this video Dr. Eric Liu from Vanderbilt University Medical Center and Dr. Kjell Oberg from Uppsala University Hospital in Sweden discuss some advanced techniques and treatments for neuroendocrine disease. More information can be found at www.vanderbilthealth.com About the Vanderbilt Neuroendocrine Center The Vanderbilt Neuroendocrine Center rallies the expertise of medical oncologists, gastroenterologists, neurologists, surgeons and other specialists around the fight against neuroendocrine tumors, carcinoid tumors and other neuroendocrine disease. The center uses advanced techniques and treatments to address the unique needs of each patient. For example, Vanderbilt was the first institution in the United States to successfully locate neuroendocrine tumors using the Gallium 68 PET/CT scan. Dr. Tony Talebi discusses the Treatment of Neuroendocrine Tumors with Dr. Strosberg. For further discussion visit www.HemOnc101.com What is the Treatment of Neuroendocrine Tumors? Neuroendocrine tumors are a heterogeneous group of neoplasms that vary in their appearance, biologic behavior, symptoms, and response to treatment. Several types of neuroendocrine tumors (eg, carcinoid tumors, pancreatic neuroendocrine tumors, medullary thyroid cancers, pheochromocytomas) are characterized by slow growth and frequent secretion of hormones or vasoactive substances. In most cases, these tumors also have typical histologic appearance and are accurately diagnosed with standard pathologic methods (light microscopy and immunohistochemical staining). Other neuroendocrine tumors, typified by small cell carcinoma of the lung, are highly aggressive neoplasms, and are usually advanced when diagnosed. Well differentiated neuroendocrine tumors originating in the gastrointestinal tract (carcinoid, pancreatic neuroendocrine tumors) are the most common neuroendocrine tumors. However, these are not the most common neuroendocrine tumors presenting with unknown primary site, since most are diagnosed at an early stage and cured by surgical resection. Poorly differentiated neuroendocrine tumors are characterized by multiple sites of metastases and rarely produce symptoms related to secretion of bioactive substances. Living with a Pancreatic NET (Neuroendocrine Tumours) - Inge's Story
Living with a Pancreatic NET (Neuroendocrine Tumours) - Inge's Story
www.streamingwell.com - See how Inge still leads a full, happy and healthy life living with Pancreatic NET, a rare form of cancer. Inge experienced symptoms such as constant diarrhoea and stomach problems and was originally diagnosed with celiac disease. The symptoms returned however after a few years of following a gluten free diet and she returned to the gastroenterologist who diagnosed Pancreatic NET. After having surgery to remove the pancreatic neuroendocrine tumour Inge now leads a normal life with the help of a daily antacid which helps with the symptoms. Inge is now Chairwomen of the board for BS-NET a patient support group for those living with Pancreatic NET. The work of BS-NET is carried out across Europe, they strive to improve early diagnosis through raising awareness of the condition. BS-NET also provides patients with the opportunity to share their experiences of pancreatic NET.
