Monk TV Theme -- Rhythm + Lead
Monk TV Theme -- Rhythm + Lead
Well, yesterday I learned the Monk theme, originally composed by Jeff Beal, so I thought I would do a video to support it. Okay so first I played the rhythm track and recorded it, then played it back and played the melody over it. Kinda like a failed looper, since I don't have one. Hope you guys enjoy it. Tabs can be found in various forms around the place, but I didn't really use them.

New Legend of Madame White Snake [新白娘子传奇] is a 1993 TV series starring Angie Chiu and Cecilia Yip. Angie Chiu (Traditional Chinese: 趙雅芝; Pinyin: Zhào Yǎzhī), born 15 November 1954 in Hong Kong is an actress, and was the third runner up in the 1973 Miss Hong Kong pageant. She is most noted for her leading role in The Bund, opposite Chow Yun-Fat and Lui Leung-Wai. She's one of the most well known and favored actresses in both Hong Kong and Mainland China. Cecilia Yip Tung (traditional Chinese: 葉童) (born 8 March 1962) is a Hong Kong actress. Legend of the White Snake Legend of the White Snake (simplified Chinese: 白蛇传; traditional Chinese: 白蛇傳) is a Chinese legend, which existed as oral traditions before any written compilation. It has since become a major subject of several Chinese opera, films and TV series. The earliest attempt to fictionalize the story appears to be "Madame White Snake Jailed Eternally in the Leifeng Pagoda" (白娘子永鎮雷峰塔) in Jing Shi Tong Yan (警世通言) by Feng Menglong (馮夢龍) during the Ming Dynasty (1368 to 1644). Basic story At its most basic, the story tells of a young scholar who falls in love with a beautiful woman, unaware that she is a white snake who has taken on human form. A monk intervenes in order to save the scholar's soul and casts the white snake into a deep well at the Leifeng Pagoda. Over the centuries the story has evolved from horror story to romance with the scholar and the white snake-woman genuinely in love ...

Brooklyn Monk in Asia: Cham Muslims in Cambodia (Part 1)
Brooklyn Monk in Asia: Cham Muslims in Cambodia (Part 1)
Antonio Graceffo has been writing about the Cham ethnic minority in Southeast Asia for years. Once the Kingdom of Champa ruled the Mekong Delta area, from Vietnam to Cambodia, and sacked the Khmer capitol. Eventually, Cambodian King Jayavarman VII defeated the Cham, whose kingdom soon went into decline. The Cham people were scattered throughout Southeast Asia. Today, many still live in Cham communities, speaking their Cham language, practicing their culture and the Islamic religion. Antonio has personally explored Cham communities in Cambodia and Vietnam, as well as a small Cham enclave in the Philippines. The Tao of Kung Fu #1 - "Fear is the only darkness."
The Tao of Kung Fu #1 - "Fear is the only darkness."
In this clip from the pilot episode, young Kwai Chang Caine (Grasshopper) and Shaolin Master Po meet for the first time. Master Po is quick to demonstrate to Grasshopper that great virtue is often hidden behind assumed misfortune. This video was taken from the 1970's TV series 'Kung Fu' (Created by Ed Spielman, Herman Miller and Jerry Thorpe). It is essentially an American Western set in the latter half of the 1800's, with an Eastern hero who has neither a gun or a horse. The story follows the adventures of Kwai Chang Caine (David Carradine); a nature loving Shaolin priest, who recently fled China. He speaks softly but is no pushover. He lives humbly yet knows great contentment. Each episode also takes the viewer back to Caine's childhood in the Shaolin temple. It is here under the instruction of the wonderfully charismatic Master Po (Keye Luke) and the stern yet loving Master Kan (Philip Ahn), young Caine (Radames Pera) learns the harmoniously balanced ways of Tao. The teachings of the Shaolin was meticulously researched for the Kung Fu series. This makes Kung Fu one of the most authentic interpretations of Philosophical Taoism available in popular culture. I was therefore surprised to see no one else had presented selected scenes from Kung Fu as an introduction to the Taoist philosophy. This is one of about 30 clips I'll be posting here during 2008. The Art of Fighting: Muay Thai Chaiya Part 2
The Art of Fighting: Muay Thai Chaiya Part 2
Muay Thai Chaiya is a fascinating fighting system deeply rooted in the martial traditions of ancient Thailand. Host, Brooklyn Monk, Antonio Graceffo studies with Kru Lek, one of Thailands leading practitioners of this effective art. Chaiya uses a low stance, bare knuckles, elbows and knees out, like a prickly pineapple waiting to impale the opponent when he moves in. the movement and position of the Chaiya fighter is so different from any other stand up fighting art that it completely takes the opponent out of his game. Antonio was barely able to do anything against a Chaiya student who had only six months of experience. The bulk of Kru Leks students are normal people who practice for fun, culture, and fitness. But some chose to fight in the professional Muay Thai ring, and they do extremely well. Unlike sport Muay Thai, Chaiya is taught from the ground up, similar to a traditional martial art, such as Karate or Tae Kwan Do. A student could walk in off the street, with previous martial arts experience and begin learning the basics from an instructor.
