CIF: Advocating for a Nuclear Free Zone in the Middle East - Cushing Academy
TheJames Martin Center for Nonproliferation Studies (CNS) developed the Critical Issues Forum (CIF) to increase awareness of disarmament and nonproliferation issues and to engage and recruit the next generation of nonproliferation specialists. Specifically, CIF is designed to involve pre-college high school students and their teachers in issues of proliferation and control of weapons of mass destruction. The 2011 CIF Student-Teacher Conference, held in Monterey, CA on April 28-29, included students form Chinese, Russian and US high schools and the theme was nuclear energy and nuclear weapons in the Middle East. Students of the Cushing Academy, in Ashburnham, MA addressed the topic of nuclear weapon free zone (NFZ) in the Middle East in a presentation that included a short film based on original archive films of the developments in modern Iranian history and student-initiated acting roles. Cushing Academy proposed a series of steps that the international community could take to encourage Iran to depart from its alleged policy of advancing a military nuclear weapons program. US, Israel seek excuse for war with Iran: James Fetzer
Israel says it will not attend a conference on creating a nuclear-free Middle East, which is scheduled for December in Finland, despite Tel Aviv's reputation as the region's sole wielder of nuclear arsenals. The head of Israel's Atomic Energy Commission (IAEC) announced the decision, claiming that the situation in the Middle East was not yet "conducive" to the creation of a nuclear weapons-free zone, AFP reported Thursday. "The concept of a region free of weapons of mass destruction, that has never been put to the test, even in the most peaceful regions of the world, is certainly much less applicable to the current volatile and hostile Middle East," Shaul Horev told a meeting of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) in Vienna on Wednesday. "Such a process can only be launched when peaceful relations exist for a reasonable period of time in the region," Horev stated, insisting that the drive for a nuclear weapons-free Mideast must come from within the region, and "cannot be imposed from outside." Israel, which has pursued a policy of ambiguity over its military nuclear program with the help of the United States, is not a signatory to the nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT), which governs and restricts the development of nuclear technology. Press TV has conducted an interview with James H. Fetzer, American philosopher and political commentator, to further discuss the issue. Evidence of Japan Fallout in BC? Mutations! Part one
Since 2011 Japan has been releasing radiation and other isotopes. The most recent explosion of a depleted uranium plant has also been travelling to British Columbia via jet stream. I live in a nuclear free zone! This does not seem fair. There was a woman looking for videos like these but I have lost her. Ban Ki-Moon slams West's threats against Iran
The UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon has praised Iran's kudos in the global arena and lashed out at the West's threats against the Islamic Republic's nuclear energy program. At a press conference on the final day of the 16th Summit of the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) in the Iranian capital Tehran on Friday, Ban touched upon Iran's nuclear issue and in a reference to the threats by Israel, the US and its Western allies against Tehran, he said, "I have condemned the threats by any member state to destroy or delegitimize another." "I have reminded the leaders ... throughout the world to lower the volume and stop the provocation that can lead the area down a slippery slope of conflict," he added. "It is time for more reason and responsibility. I urge you all to resolve differences through peaceful means," the UN chief pointed out. Elsewhere in his remarks, the UN secretary general praised Iran's cultural and historical grandeur and the country's remarkable contributions to the humanity, saying, "Iran has enriched and nourished the human civilization for centuries. As a founding member of the United Nations, Iran has also greatly contributed to creative initiatives such as the 'Middle East nuclear-weapons-free zone' and 'dialogue among civilizations'." He also lauded Iran's continued efforts to assist the Afghan nation during the US-led war in country as well as "hosting and protecting millions of Afghan refugees." Going home to the nuclear exclusion zone 警戒区域内一部解除:自宅へ。
uncannyterrain.com We were prepared to talk our way past a police checkpoint—or play dumb, in my case. But we drove right over the border unaccosted. 13 months after the tsunami, the fields remain strewn with twisted cars and the insides of ravaged houses. Cracked and roofless buildings stand untouched since the earthquake. 15 km up the Pacific coast from the still-smoldering Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant, Minami-Soma was cleaved in two. The north side of the city remains populated, while the south end was abandoned to the nuclear exclusion zone. That is, until April 16, when, for the first time, evacuees were allowed to return home without a special permit, though they still can't spend the night. The Nemotos had an organic farm here for 12 years, spreading sustainable practices to their neighbors. Mrs. Nemoto lost cousins in the tsunami. They evacuated first to Fukushima City, where radiation is twice as high as it is here, and later to adjacent Soma, where they live with their son's family. The trauma of relocation has left their teenage granddaughter suffering sleepwalking and seizures. Koichi Nemoto is determined to resume farming his evacuated land. He's working with a team of researchers to test various experimental methods of preventing crops from absorbing radioactive cesium. He can grow anything, he says proudly. It's the complete opposite for their next-door neighbors, also named Nemoto (the name of the neighborhood, too). The neighbor Nemotos have no ...

Ban ki Moon in Iran
United Nations (UN) Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon said he believed "Iran would benefit from fully drawing on the activism of civil society." Addressing a full auditorium yesterday in the Iranian Foreign Ministry's School of International Relations, Ban said that unleashing the potential of civil society meant accepting its diversity of views, "even when these views might seem challenging to authorities". Noting that Iranian scholarship and "Islam itself" offered a rich and pluralist tradition of interpretation and application of law, Ban encouraged Iran "to allow greater space for different and divergent perspectives to play out in public debate". Adding that many countries with strong Islamic traditions had found ways to comply with international standards while remaining faithful to their Islamic identity and values, Ban welcomed Iran's judiciary efforts to prevent the execution of juvenile offenders but encouraged them to take "further steps to restrict and even abolish the death penalty in law and practice." While remarking that many other human rights challenges remained, Ban said that restricting freedom of expression and suppressing social activism would only set back development and bring instability to the country. He said that it was "especially important for the voices of Iran's people to be heard during next year's presidential election", and urged the Iranian authorities to release opposition leaders, human rights defenders, journalists and social activists ...

MaximsNewsNetwork: Amb. MAGED ABDELAZIZ (EGYPT & NAM): MIDDLE EAST: NUCLEAR-FREE-WEAPON ZONE
MaximsNewsNetwork: 24 September 2010 - UNTV: United Nations, New York -- Ambassador Maged A. Abdelaziz from Egypt, who representes the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM), said today at the United Nations (UN) that the progress on the goal of establishing a nuclear weapon free zone in the Middle East "should not be lost" and that the May 2010 NPT (Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty) Review Conference's Plan of Action "gives impetus to intensify work aimed at to beginning the negotiations for a nuclear weapons convention." On the prospect of a Middle East nuclear weapons free zone, Iranian Foreign Minister Manouchehr Mottaki said that the "only regime that has these nuclear weapons is the Zionist regime in the Middle East." He asked that the head of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) provide a "timetable" for the "destruction of the weapons and warheads which are there in occupied Palestine." Iraq's representative said that his country "believes that it is essential to make Middle East a region free of weapons of mass destructions." He added that his Government is coordinating "its efforts with the Arab group and IAEA and other international relevant forum." Yesterday, in an exclusive interview with UNifeed, when asked about Iran's relationship with the IAEA, Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad said that "if the international law says that disarmament must happen, then it must happen. If it says proliferation must cease, then it must cease." When asked about whether his ...

Asia institute - nuclear talk part1 This Asia Institute seminar considered the future of nuclear power in North Korea. After a flurry of discussions about the future of nuclear power in North Korea, and the legitimate and illegitimate uses of nuclear technologies, dialog on this topic has been frozen for a decade. There are tantalizing suggestions that discussions about nuclear power in North Korea could start again in the future. But the world has changed utterly since then, confronting us with a panoply of new issues that were not in play the last time we discussed light water reactors. The crisis at the Fukushima Daiichi Plant in Japan has raised more general questions about safety in nuclear power, China is planning to build a large number of nuclear power plants along its East coast that could become a serious safety issue. Speakers: Sharon Squassoni (Director of Proliferation Prevention Program at CSIS), Scott Sneider (Senior Fellow for Korea Studies at Council on Foreign Relations), John Endicott (President of Woosong and founder of the Limited Nuclear Weapons Free Zone for Northeast Asia), Kim Myungja (Chairman of Green Korea 21 and former Korean Minister of the Environment) & Sok Chul Kim (Senior Researcher at Korea Institute for Nuclear Safety and former staff members of International Atomic Energy Agency). Seminar moderated by Emanuel Pastreich, director of the Asia Institute.

BEATING THE BOMB: Part 4 - More Nukes
Part 4: The UK government earmarks 75 billion for the development of new nuclear weapons systems. A worldwide nuclear arms race is on and the fight for a nuclear free world continues. Beating the Bomb is about war & peace, foreign policy, vested interests, nuclear war and the fight against them. It is a historical documentary that charts 'The Bomb' from 1941 to present day; juxtaposing the political backdrop against the growth of the peace movement and framing the nuclear weapons issue within the wider context of global justice. Beating the Bomb is an independent, non commercial, labour of love production as well as a piece of activism. It features Tony Benn, Mark Thomas, Naomi Klein, George Monbiot, Kate Hudson, Helen John and Vivienne Westwood amongst others.
