Jetpack by WordPress.com

Having trouble getting off the ground with Jetpack? We’re here to help. Here are some common issues and solutions.

When I try to install, it says I need to upgrade to the latest version of WordPress. How do I do that?

If you are running 2.7 or later, you should get a prompt in your WordPress Admin Panel (wp‑admin) asking you to upgrade. Click the link and follow the prompts to update to the latest version. If you’re using an even older version, or would prefer to update manually, you can download the latest version of WordPress from the WordPress.org downloads page.

I can’t get the plugin to install. What am I doing wrong?

The easiest way to install Jetpack or any plugin is from within WordPress itself. Go to your Dashboard, click on Plugins in the left panel, then click Add New. If you search for ‘Jetpack’, you’ll find the latest version and be able to install it by clicking the ‘Install Now’ link.

If you don’t see a Plugins menu, then your site is probably on WordPress.com and you don’t need Jetpack, since the features in Jetpack are already bundled into your site.

When I try to connect to WordPress.com during Jetpack setup, I get an error or it takes forever and nothing happens. What’s wrong?

There can be several reasons the connection doesn’t happen successfully. A slow connection or intermittent internet issues can cause problems, and there is no harm in waiting a few minutes and trying again.

Depending on your host, there can be issues related to how their servers are configured that prevent Jetpack from setting up properly. You should contact your host as they might have a workaround.

There are known issues with the W3 Total Cache’s plugin, used by HostGator and other hosting providers. We recommend temporarily turning Total Cache’s ‘Object Cache’ off, connecting Jetpack, turning the object cache back on, and then clearing the object cache.

I completed the setup process, but now I just see the screen with the list of features. Now what?

After successfully connecting to your WordPress.com account, each feature of Jetpack is already activated. Since each works differently, you can click on the Learn More buttons for specific instructions on how to use each one.

I’d like more information about how each of the features work. Where I can I find that?

You can read about features on their WordPress.com pages. They work almost exactly the same through Jetpack:

  • Gravatar Hovercards: A business card like user interface for people who leave comments.
  • WordPress.com stats: Powerful and simple to understand statistics for your site.
  • Twitter Widget: Make your social media activity on twitter part of your theme.
  • Shortcodes: Quickly add movies, images and more with a single line of code.
  • Shortlinks: Instantly create an easy to copy mini-url for any post on your site.
  • LaTeX: Use the famous markup language to quickly create beautiful mathematical expressions and equations.
  • Sharedaddy: Your readers can easily share your posts via email or their favorite social networks.
  • After the Deadline: Your writing will improve thanks to this artificial intelligence based spell, style, and grammar checker.

How do I turn off one of the features provided by Jetpack?

On the feature card explaining the feature you’d like to turn off, click the “Learn More” button. A “Deactivate” button will appear. Click that button and that feature will be completely deactivated.
