The Gingrich Doctrine: ‘Kill Them!’
If ignorance is strength, most of the GOP candidates are powerhouses
His hands on his ample hips, Newt Gingrich looked like Mussolini up there on the stage at the GOP presidential debate as he bellowed “everybody knows” the Pakistanis were hiding Osama bin Laden in plain sight, “a mile from a Pakistani military academy.” Ron Paul, who knows more about monetary policy than the intricacies of the US-Pakistani relationship, stood there looking appalled as Gingrich let loose with his war cry: “Kill them!” The yahoos went wild with joy. The Newtster was reacting to Paul’s point about respecting Pakistani sovereignty – and the dangers of allowing such cross-border raids to become routine. After all, that could work both ways, as Paul tried – in vain – to point out.
The reality, though, is that the Pakistanis in all likelihood did know about the raid well in advance, and it is just as likely they had a hand in the entire operation from the start. As the Guardian reported at the time:
“The US and Pakistan struck a secret deal almost a decade ago permitting a US operation against Osama bin Laden on Pakistani soil similar to last week’s raid that killed the al-Qaeda leader, the Guardian has learned.
“The deal was struck between the military leader General Pervez Musharraf and President George Bush after Bin Laden escaped US forces in the mountains of Tora Bora in late 2001, according to serving and retired Pakistani and US officials.
“Under its terms, Pakistan would allow US forces to conduct a unilateral raid inside Pakistan in search of Bin Laden, his deputy, Ayman al-Zawahiri, and the al-Qaeda No3. Afterwards, both sides agreed, Pakistan would vociferously protest the incursion.
“‘There was an agreement between Bush and Musharraf that if we knew where Osama was, we were going to come and get him,’ said a former senior US official with knowledge of counterterrorism operations. ‘The Pakistanis would put up a hue and cry, but they wouldn’t stop us.’”
Good ol’ Musharraf, the one loyal ally we had in the region – dumped by the US State Department for his lack of “democratic” credentials. More real al-Qaeda operatives were arrested in Pakistan during his tenure than all the efforts of our FBI and CIA combined.
In any case, it’s just common sense the Pakistanis were in on the Abbottabad raid: after all, the Americans set up a safe house in what has been described as a “garrison town” – a feat next to impossible without the Pakistanis knowing about it. As one Pakistani senior officer pointed out to the Global Post, the airspace over Abbottabad is a no fly zone: there’s no way the US could have pulled off the operation without the full knowledge and cooperation of the Pakistani military. The area around the bin Laden compound was cordoned off by the authorities in the hours prior to the raid, and residents were told to stay inside with their lights out.
I don’t know who’s giving Rep. Paul his foreign policy talking points, but in discussions of foreign policy specifics matter: you can deduce the basic principles of economics from self-evident axioms, as students of Austrian economics [.pdf] know. However, you cannot do the same when making the case for a non-interventionist foreign policy. This is where empirical evidence is key to understanding what is really going on, as opposed to what our rulers want us to believe.
Here’s the kicker: the same people in the government pushing for more strenuous and overt intervention in Pakistan know all about Musharraf’s 2001 agreement with the US, yet they cynically promote the idea that Pakistan was hiding bin Laden in order to advance their own agenda. There are so many layers of deception masking the truth about American foreign policy that peeling them all back is the equivalent of the thirteenth labor of Hercules.
Speaking of Monday’s Republican debate: if there is any limit to Rick Perry’s stupidity, then I suspect we have yet to reach it. His statement that Turkey is ruled by “Islamic terrorists” and ought to be kicked out of NATO was applauded vigorously by the audience – the same audience that booed Paul when he invoked the Golden Rule. The only problem for Perry and his fans is that Turkey is a vital US ally, and is ruled not by “Islamic terrorists” but by a moderate and staunchly pro-Western Muslim party democratically elected: the country boasts a modern economy with innumerable economic and political ties to the West. Perry’s is a gaffe that would normally disqualify its utterer from seeking office higher than alderman: not in today’s GOP, however, where ignorance is an asset.
The impetus for Perry’s latest embarrassing faux pas was a leading question from Bret Baier, who appears to embody the lunkheaded viciousness that characterizes the “reporters” at Fox News. He certainly looks and sounds the part: the vacuous stare, the protruding ears like two little radar dishes scanning for targets, the propaganda that pours out of his mouth as if a button were being pushed somewhere:
“Governor Perry, since the Islamist-oriented party took over in Turkey, the murder rate of women has increased 1,400 percent there. Press freedom has declined to the level of Russia. The prime minister of Turkey has embraced Hamas and Turkey has threatened military force against both Israel and Cypress. [sic] Given Turkey’s turn, do you believe Turkey still belongs in NATO?”
To begin with, a grand total of 953 Turkish women were murdered in the first seven months of 2009, the last time period for which figures are available, up from 806 in 2008. The 1400 percent figure comes from a statement by the AKP justice minister in which he measured the increase from 2002: if the “Islamist terrorists” who run the Turkish government are encouraging the murder of women, why would their own Justice Minister make this kind of statement?
Secondly, if Senators Joe Lieberman and Lindsey Graham are trying to convince the Turks that only they can bring Hamas to the negotiating table, is Turkey’s relationship with the rulers of Gaza a plus or a minus for US diplomatic efforts in the region? This is a question Gov. Perry is completely unprepared to ask, let alone answer.
Perry is way out of his depth, and for him to be presented as a credible candidate for the presidency is a disgrace – and a minus for the GOP, which is hurting itself badly by allowing him to make a fool of himself at each and every debate. Of course, a Governor doesn’t have to be an expert on the internal politics of Turkey: if only he’d stayed in Texas, he would have saved himself and his party a lot of trouble.
Ignorance of such abstruse topics is not a moral failing – unless, that is, one is charged with making life-and-death decisions requiring this kind of specialized knowledge. In that case, it is highly doubtful anyone not immersed in the country one is concerned with could have sufficient understanding to even attempt to make such a decision. Friedrich Hayek, the free market economist, understood that central planning by governments is impossible because the planners lack sufficient knowledge of the many factors taken into account by the market: the same is true when it comes to planning the fate of nations overseas – only more so. That conservatives fail to understand this simple fact is a tribute to their thickheadedness. No matter how many times that simple principle is demonstrated in real life – Vietnam, Iraq, Afghanistan, etc. – the lesson forever eludes them, transfixed as they are by demagogues of Gingrich’s ilk urging them to “Kill! Kill!”

I guess that Gingrich's comment 'Kill, Kill' represents the basic mind-set in the minds of most Americans.
America is a country of killers and they've been doing it ever since the U.S. came into being. It is their answer to every problem.
I'm sure the Germans prior to 1945 probably said the same thing about anyone who questioned them or their fascist ambitions.
America has gone over the tipping point. It is governed by insanity and led by psychopaths. Changing the path it is on will require war, a bloody war, another bloody war!
Surely there is a better way!

i was actually quite puzzled when one of these goons, Romney If i recall correctly, said that it is unacceptable for anybody to kill american citizens and that we should go after them and kill them in return……..
Are we not killing american citizens ourselves? Didnt Israel murder an american citizen aboard the Mavi Mara gaza flotilla execution style by shooting him in the head 4 times? …
And what about the principle of reciprocity? We are most likely guilty of murdering Iranian citizens in terrorist acts and also by assassinating their scientists. Does Iran have the right to act on the same principles?
Something tell me no. The right to kill is reserved only for the white, judeo-christian world

Perry ,maybe, doesn't know that Turkey was a Muslim country before Erdogan party was elected and so the increase of women murdered have to be explain different and not by the fact that a Islamist inclined party govern. What says Perry about the increase of women assassinated (children and civil also)by the "free world" crusaders in Iraq,Libya,Palestine? But that Perry is a nut doesn't matter, what matter is that he receives the support of Americans and that except Paul,no one seem to be a normal human being, they are all caricatures of characters from Kubrik movie:Dr.Strangelove.

No, that's NOT true:
"I'm sure the Germans prior to 1945 probably said the same thing about anyone who questioned them or their fascist ambitions. "
Sorry, but I think I know that much better!

Thanks Justin for pointing out that Friedrich Hayek understanding of central planning i even more true "when it comes to planning the fate of nations overseas – only more so."
Unfortunately, the same people who pay lip service to a free economy actually are corporativists and are the same ones who believe that the likes of Liz Cheney and interns from the Heritage Foundation can run a country in the way it matters, for the corporativists and the usual suspects benefit, not the people of the occupied country.

We are in a tough situation. The Republicans are addicted to "tough guy" imperialism and the Democrats to "humanitarian" imperialism. The exceptions are few – Ron Paul being one of them, and the only one running for president.
The South Carolina debate performance was a national disgrace.

Benito Mussolini was a far better human being than Newt Gingrich ever was or ever will be. Gingrich represents now in 2012 as he always has the very worst about America. Ignorant, narrow minded, bigoted, avaricious, and morally and ethically bankrupt, Gingrich has the world view of Ayatollah Khomeni without the justification of having been persecuted. He is a disgrace to America.

To me, Ron Paul went through the debate with a look on his face that said that he has finally figured out that he has gotten in bed with some really nasty people. Romney, Gingrich, Perry , and Santorum are arrogant, sleazy, stupid and weird in that order. And that crowd of well-dressed, white people screaming for more blood, represents our elite. Too bad, Ron didn't stick with the Libertarians; he wouldn't win either way, but at least he would have been with a better class of people.

You neglected to add the most important adjective of all – dangerous.
I just couldn't bring myself to watch last night's debate, but from what I'm reading here, I wouldn't have seen or heard anything that I wouldn't have anticipated in advance. You're right too, Richard, in that Ron Paul is DEFINITELY uncomfortable wallowing in the cesspool that is GOP presidential campaign politics. I also have to believe that the look on his face that you mention probably also reflected his realization that the bloodthirsty, brainless morons in the audience, identical to the audiences at every other Republican "debate" in which he has participated so far, are reflective of the vast majority of registered Republican votards. Ron has probably reached the realization, as those of us aware of the futility of voting long ago realized, that his campaign is at best a symbol of what America once stood for, but no longer does and never will again. If he had managed to convince himself that he still had a chance of winning the nomination up until last night, it's hard to believe that he has the mental and moral energy this morning to still do so.
America has clearly demonstrated that it doesn't want Ron Paul's leadership. It's just as well, because, given what took place last night, it clearly doesn't deserve it either.

the entire obl "assasination" was nothing but political theater of the highest order. a classic psy op. the guy was dead for years and everyone in washington knew it. we're supposed to believe the world's most wanted man was living in a u.s./pak military compound undetected for years? let's look at the facts: obl was a known cia asset for years. his family and the bush klan have done business for decades. so we have an established connection. the fact that the fairy tale they created changed like 50 times in two days proves it was nothing but sheer fabrication….there was a fire fight, there wasn't, blah blah blah…seal team 6 "dies" a few days later. sounds a lot like ruby/oswald. and really, after 9-11, WMD's and all the other gov't lies in the last decade alone why would anyone believe any "story" the gov't puts out. and we shot him and buried him at sea? i guess capturing and interrogating wasn't an option? give me a break i just don't buy a word of any of it.

and be able to influence 1/10000th of them. He knows, better than you or I, just what and who he's dealing with and continues to do it anyway because the message and the philosophy have to be brought to the public stage again.
If a majority of Americans reject this, well, then that only says what we've believed for years, that Americans allow this stuff to be done in their name because, ultimately, they agree with it, while paying lip service to the freedom of the individual.

"seal team 6 "dies" a few days later. sounds a lot like ruby/oswald"
I had to look this up as it seemed unlikely. Members of Seal Team 6 died 3 months after the raid that killed OBL. And Seal Team 6 consists of hundreds of members. None of the people who died in that helicopter crash 3 months later were involved with the OBL raid. Get your story straight.

Paul also missed a real opportunity to point out that "America's enemies" are very often misidentified, just as they were by Andrew Jackson, that old Indian killer. I've not seen anyone mention that some of America's "enemies" Newt Gingrich lauded ethnic cleanser Andrew Jackson for killing were native Americans. His name is hated by Cherokee, Creek and Seminole. The Cherokee were fully integrated when they were removed.

That caught my eye as well. The OBL raid, with the utterly inexplicable "burial at sea", stinks to high heaven, but I really doubt that and the helicopter crash are related.
I have no idea what, but it seems cl;ear that something was being hidden.

fair enough about "days" but in terms of timing 3 months is still relatively soon. i should have mentioned that the seal team 6 deaths were the largest number of deaths in a single incident in afghanistan to date. dead men tell no tales was all i was trying to infer, apologies for the inaccuracy about the timing, i meant in a somewhat figurative sense.

Thank you for helping put an end to the asinine Anglo-Saxon propaganda that everything that happened in Germany before 1933 is somehow supposed to have led to Hitler. I don't know whether I should laugh or merely roll my eyes at the concept of the "fascist Germans" being invaded by Napoleon Bonaparte over and over again, just to cite an example.

Just the fact that in a televised debate a candidate or candidates would openly advocate the killing of an adversary, is beyond my own comprehension.
To call for death is even beyond what the dark would ask for. While I for one love living in the dark they ask for more than even the dark can provide. They go beyond the dark and into another realm that those of us who live in the moonlight would not enter.Unfortunate for them, they will find that so far deep is endless…

Yup. either that or antisemitism. I'll never understand how recognizing that Israelis are not little gods is somehow "proof" that I "hate Jews" or something. That makes no sense. Are they not humans? Don't they make mistakes? IS this concept THAT difficult to grasp?

I just hope the whole Abbotabad raid story is a complete fantasy and they didn't kill some poor bearded man just to have a body to dump in the ocean. Because they sure didn't kill bin Laden and nobody on that stage or in Congress believes Obama's story. They didn't even pass a resolution commending the SEAL team. The story is asinine: the most wanted man in the world, $25 million bounty on his head, is surprised in his underwear with helicopters hovering over his "luxury compound" (that looked like a giant outhouse) making a racket that woke up the whole city and they were all on their rooftops watching. But not "bin Laden;" he thought they were coming for the guy next door so he stayed in his underwear in bed.

Well, the point is to muddy the waters. Can't ever pin the story down because the SEALs of the OBL raid "may" be dead. I don't believe there was any "OBL" raid but the helicopter crash story wraps it all up with a bow.

Any American [ or anyone else around the word for that matter ] who believes our military KILLED OBL AND BURIED HIM AT SEA is truly dumber than an industrial park full of warehouses full of racks and racks of boxes of rocks. The story is pure theater and illustrates the thorough dumbing down of the average U.S. citizen – HILARIOUS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

"pure theater"……..you got that right. The crowds dancing in the streets and hootin' & hollerin' the day after attests to how easily so many are spoon fed lies and deceit.
