Freak Out in Italy does an in depth interview with Jim

October 29th, 2008

Roberto Calabro did a great in depth interview with Jim. It’s a great music site and magazine, then again have you ever seen an Italian magazine that wasn’t? They have particularly good taste in music, with features on Iggy Pop, Dandy Warhols, Wilco, Beastie Boys, Nine Inch Nails, Morrisey and a number of interesting looking Italian acts. The interview does a very good job of walking through the various periods of my musical career and then bring the discussion up to date. If you can’t read Italian, google Jim Basnight and freak out and click translate this page.

PVAc to 44.1 kHz is a great place to find your music

October 14th, 2008

Javier does a real good job of presenting this site, which delves into a wide array of good music for diverse tastes, but with a pop conciousness. It was great speaking to Javier in this in depth interview a few weeks ago. He really cares about the artists and if you look at the rest of his selections, you’ll see he has good taste, as well as an open mind to all styles. Thanks Javier and we hope to see you in Spain.

Cueburn is a site that exposes great lost gems

October 8th, 2008

With a strong nod to power-pop and rootsy rock, but with very little general rules, this site does a grea job of exposing very good hard to find music. I love their selections and tastes and was very happy to see them recognize the 1984 EP by Jim Basnight and the Moberlys. This release was never marketed well by the folks that pressed it in Seattle and all 4 of the tracks were included on the Moberlys “Sexteen” release on the French Lolita label in 1985. Luckily I retained all of the copies that didn’t sell, but for the most part I left them in a closet, as the era of CD’s was ushered in. Now that vinyl is making a comeback I am going to be selling them off, as I have all of my other vinyl titles in the past. Let me know if you want one and I’ll sell it cheap while I’ve got enough. It doesn’t hurt that I’m also in the process of moving and need to create space. I’ll give a great deal if you want to buy a quantity of them.

Sons of the Dolls did a great piece on “Seattle-NY-LA”

October 7th, 2008

Any reference to the NY Dolls piques my interest and to be referred to as one of their offspring is extremely flattering. I remember seeing the poster for their first album down in the U-District and just being floored. Their music was so powerful and visionary, yet completely classic rock and roll. It not only recalled the style of the beginnings of rock and roll, but the manic power of youth that it focused into an artform better known now as punk rock. The greasy dark gang style danger of artists like the Shangrila’s, Gene Vincent, Archie Bell and Link Wray, combined with the bouncy infectious pop of Gary U.S. Bonds, the Kinks, Bo Diddely, the Who, Chuck Berry, the Stones and the Coasters, with no small reference to the Chicago Blues of Sonny Boy and Howlin’ Wolf. I once spoke to Rick Rivets an original member of the band, prior to the name Dolls, which was coined by Syl Sylvain who who replaced him. He told me that he and Arthur would listen to the Sonics and the (Tacoma) Wailers albums that they found somewhere and that Johnny really liked them too. If you want to learn about some really cool bands check out this site.

All Music Guide has done a ton to help us.

October 4th, 2008

They’ve been the top source for info on music of all kinds, especially pop. They’ve also been very supportive of Jim Basnight, The Moberlys, the Rockinghams and the rest of our releases. They are a tough place to get a good review and they have been noticeably kind, even complimentary to us. It’s been great, not only for the good exposure for us on their site, but because of all of the places that their online info is quoted and referenced. AMG is a great place to see about just about any music that you may want to find out about or obtain. It’s really indicative of how positive the internet has been, is and could be for educating the world and new listeners about great music.

Popartx does an Italian review of “Sexteen”

October 2nd, 2008

You’ve got to love Mich and his blog, if you are a fan of good rock and roll and diverse musical tastes. His coverage of Italian culture is colorful and all over the map. If you want a taste of what is going on there musically, as well as politically, in sports, comics and lots of great pics, this is the place. You can tell he really loves his music as well, with huge helpings of latin, rock, artistic pop and power-pop.

Trouser Press has been a long time supporter of my music

October 1st, 2008

This great site which was started by Trouser Press publisher Ira Robbins is a treasure of knowledge of great rock, punk and pop from the late-70’s through the late-90’s with a few notable exceptions like Big Star, the Velvet Underground and Bob Marley and the Wailers. They do the best job of any large web site of covering the NY scene of the late 70’s and early 80’s, the new wave scene and the edgy side of pop music in general. They have a great forum where music geeks can assemble and exchange ideas and favorite tunes, albums, lists, etc. Trouser Press picked my LP, “The Moberlys” as one of “The #3 Underground LP” of 1980, which really opened a lot of doors for me in NYC when I moved there late that year. This site is a must for any well versed music and record fan.

Twilight Zone does a great series on my music

September 30th, 2008

This site is one of the best out there for bringing great music to people’s attention around the world. There is always an accent on real american music (even if it’s being performed by others), be it rootsy rockabilly, garage, power-pop, punk rock, surf, psychedelic, real blues, soul, r+b, folk rock, country rock, tex-mex, western swing, 60’s pop, zydeco and just plain rock ‘n’ roll. It was really nice to see them recognize our stuff along with all of these great artists. Check them out and at the very least learn something about the history of some great musical styles.

HE ROCKED, HE ROLLED, HE SURVIVED

September 29th, 2008

This is where I  got the idea for the new site. It’s a great site that showcases new talent and new releases. They really have good taste in the pop vein and are very unpredictable and worthwhile in their recommendations. This was done right after we agreed in principle to release a career retrospect. The CD’s final title will be “We Rocked and Rolled: The First 25 Years With Jim Basnight, the Moberlys and Beyond”. The label will be Disclosed. The reason it’s taken so long is mostly legal stuff, but it should be out in the next month or so. It will definitely further our music and get the live show out there. This band and show right now are really making it happen.
