"
Get Sexy" is a
2009 single performed by
English girl group
Sugababes, released as the
lead single for the band's seventh studio album,
Sweet 7 (see
2009 in music). It is the last single to feature original member
Keisha Buchanan. During the single release interval between the release of "Get Sexy" and "
About a Girl", Keisha Buchanan controversially left the group. As a result of the group line-up change, "Get Sexy" was re-recorded along with a number of other tracks to feature the vocals of new member
Jade Ewen and the removal of the vocals by ex-member Keisha Buchanan for the release of
Sweet 7 in 2010. Working with The Smeezingtons was described by group member
Amelle Berrabah as "amazing" and "a great opportunity", Berrabah went on to say that Sugababes have great admiration for the production outfit. In May, Sugababes then mentioned that they were really excited about the new material that they have been recording and that they could not wait to get back to the
United Kingdom and play it to their record label,
Island. On 7 June, the group chose "Get Sexy" as the
lead single for their seventh studio album, saying that they reckoned that they had picked a "winner". On 6 July, a release date of 31 August 2009 was revealed for "Get Sexy" and a day later on 7 July it premiered on
BBC Radio 1 in a show presented by
Scott Mills. In an interview with
Digital Spy, Buchan said that the response to the song was amazing, "From the beginning there's been a real buzz about the track. It's had a great response from so many people, even if they say, 'Forget about the rest of them, this one I love'. It's a bit disappointing that there aren't any big TV shows at the moment, as we really want to perform it more!" The cover artwork for "Get Sexy" was revealed on the group's official website on 3 August 2009. In addition to responding well to "Get Sexy" the public had also noted that it was not immediately obvious that the single was a Sugababes song. In reply, Keisha Buchanan said that making "Get Sexy" sound different to the previous work of the group was not a conscious decision"I think that when we come back we always want to make sure that whatever we come back with is different to what we've done before and we think our vocals are our signature thing, not necessarily the song. I think that after this single people won't be surprised if we come back tomorrow with a rock album. During the single release interval between the release of "Get Sexy" and "
About a Girl", Keisha Buchanan controversially left the group. "Get Sexy" is an up-tempo
pop song, with
dance,
electronic and
R&B; influences. The
beat is set in
common time and moves at a fast-paced 120
beats per minute.
Critical reception
"Get Sexy" garnered mixed reviews from contemporary music critics. The song received criticism for having a lack of originality and being largely similar to the singles released by
Lady Gaga and the
Black Eyed Peas. It was, however, praised for its fierce attitude, raunchy lyrics, rhythmical beats and catchyness. Caroline Sullivan of
The Guardian described the song as a "grinding, fiercely catchy R&B; number". David Balls of
Digital Spy awarded the song a four out of five star rating, saying: "Get Sexy' is a dancefloor stomper that nestles somewhere between '
Boom Boom Pow' and '
Bonkers' in its blend of electropop, techno and R&B; sounds. It may not be massively original, nor an instant classic to rival '
About You Now' or '
Push the Button', but with a Right Said Fred-sampling hook, a thundering chorus and plenty of attitude - most noticeably from Amelle - it returns Sugababes right to the forefront of the pop landscape.'
Popjustice positively reviewed "Get Sexy": "'Get Sexy' is the first track from a newly invigorated Sugababes and it more than justifies the band's recent jaunts to record in the States. 'Get Sexy' is a punchy, explosive pop single which while not being quite as adventurous as it thinks it could never be described as a pedestrian. Sugababes are back..." Fraser McAlpine of the
BBC gave the single a mainly negative review, calling it a "mess" which has "not bothered to make it rhyme" in the way the original, '
I'm Too Sexy' did. McAlpine went on to say: "the 'shut up and watch me walk' bit is pilfered from the
Ting Tings. [...]
Amelle's 'silly boys' bit - which is brilliant, by the way - may have more than a passing acquaintance with '
My Humps'. [...] the chorus is desperate for someone to scream '
will.i.am drop the beat now'. [...] it is strange how
Keisha, the only original Sugababe left, seems to be doing the least amount of work." Sean Thomas of
Drowned in Sound negatively reviewed the song, saying: "It's got some elements that sound like the band of old who knew how to wield their arsenal effectively - the dirty
synths before the chorus and the playful delivery of the
coda - but by large it's horrid. Sugababes were once 'sexy' by not trying to be. Here, it feels like you're being set on by three
cockney lap dancers with loud hailers [...] Worse that that, the vague notion of flirtation is decimated by an illogical nod to that Right Said Fred song. It's as if someone tried to recreate '
Freak Like Me', but was deaf. [...] The days of 'Push the Button' with its dirty undertones, have been replaced by outright desperation."

Chart performance
During the first week of its release, according to the UK midweek chart, "Get Sexy" was ahead of its nearest competitor, "
Run This Town", by
Jay-Z featuring
Rihanna and
Kanye West, at number one. Keisha Buchanan commented that "it's nice that we can roll with the big dogs. I think Jay-Z would be happy for us". Eventually, "Get Sexy" debuted at number two on the
UK Singles Chart on 6 September 2009. "Get Sexy" marks their first #2-peaking single and the fourth of their eight lead singles not to peak at the top, following "
Overload", back in 2000, "
Easy" in 2006, and "
Girls", released in
2008. On its second week of release, "Get Sexy" fell to #8 and again to #10 the following week. The song lasted six weeks in the Top 40 chart before falling out and landing at #49. In Ireland on 4 September 2009, "Get Sexy" debuted and peaked at number three on the
Irish Singles Chart, becoming Sugababes' highest charting single in
Ireland since "
About You Now", and the group's highest debut on the chart since
Mutya Buena left the band in 2005. The single was the highest new entry on the chart that week. In the UK it has sold 165,000 copies making it their 8th best selling single.
Music video
The video was directed by Emil Nava, brother of
Jake Nava. The video features Amelle Berrabah in a
bird cage,
Heidi Range in a
house of mirrors shot at by intense light beams and Keisha Buchanan posing on a couch. During the chorus, the girls can be seen in and through the walls of a triangular box with different coloured lights and standing together with
chains around their wrists tying them together. The video ends with the Sugababes in a room covered in
graffiti. Popjustice praised the video claiming that it "seems to feature Sugababes 3.0 as 'the full package', and makes sense of this lineup, for the first time. This is a good thing."
The video was not re shot to feature Jade Ewen.
