...may your song always be sung...

Today, being the 24th of May, is a hugely important date in the musical calendar.
Andy Abrahams flies the Union Jack in the Eurovision Song Contest.

No no no no waaaaayyyyyyy!

It's the birthday of one Robert Allen Zimmerman aka Elston Gunn, Jack Frost, Blind Boy Grunt, Robet Milkwood Thomas and, most significantly, Bob Dylan.
Like most other artists, Dylan means something different to every one but, while some other artists ebb and flow with the waves of relevance, Dylan has resolutely stood against the tide.
His contribution has always remained consistent.
Even in times of inconsistency, even through the fallow years of the late 1980s, through other peoples’ interpretation of his songs, he has retained his currency. Whether you love him, hate him or sit restlessly upon that barbed wire fence, he has transcended so many generations and embraced so many traditions through his music, that few could honestly claim to have been untouched by his work.

He is one of the great preservers of the American song book.
A Rabbie Burns for the modern age.

A collector of songs from a wide range of sources and a pioneer in the reinterpretation of the source material, he has fuelled his repertoire with everything from traditional American folk and blues through English, Irish and Scottish folk to Rockabilly, Gospel, Rock & Roll and Swing, all the while feeding back into the traditions he has helped preserve.
His devotion to this has, at times, caused critics to question his credibility but, looking back at the 32 original and 25 live and compilation albums spanning his 37 year career it’s hard to see many weak points.
Recently, compiling an iPod playlist, I trawled through my collection of over 200 Dylan albums and bootlegs.
Those bootlegs aside, I could have chosen tracks from every one of his albums. Admittedly, it was hard to pick more than one track from Self Portrait or Dylan 1973 (Lily Of The West), but it was just as hard not to include the whole of Blonde On Blonde or Blood On The Tracks.

When all the debate is done and everyone is standing on one side or another, one thing is for sure, Dylan’s legacy will endure.
Whether it is in the original form, in the shape of Guns ‘n’ Roses doing Knockin’ On Heaven’s Door or in the vocal sample on Gabrielle’s Rise, the music will endure.

the music, naturally, with a Dylan tinge, as follows...

We don't need no aggravation...

I guess the truth of it is that I’m becoming a snob.
Either that or I’m just becoming less tolerant.

I’ve nothing against any person, race, creed or nationality.
I’ve no problem with alcohol consumption (with years of practice, I’ve actually become quite good at it myself)
I’ve never felt that I was a prude, a snob or a bigot.
I’ve always been proud of the fact that I can mix with anyone.

The lessons that my recent rail experiences have taught me are contrary to the above.
As I’ve said before, this is why people feel they have to have their own private cocoon.

With the display of bad mannered ignorance last weekend put up for offer, it's clear to me that the public transport revolution is a dead duck. A complete non-starter.

Despite having been staunchly against his scathing decimation of the rail network, albeit in a retrospective way, I’m beginning to think Lord Beeching was right.
Perhaps, in the visionary sense, he was a genius of unparalleled proportions. Perhaps he foresaw the decline of moral standards and his closing of a large portion of the British rail network in the 1960s was simply a small spoke in the wheels that will eventually save us from ourselves.
I don’t really think so. Things have changed.

Never again will we see elderly ladies and gents occupying 1st class like something out of an Agatha Christie novel. Never again will children behave as they did in Enid Blyton novels. Never again. Never again

At the risk of this sounding like some gospel hour sermon, modern society has lost the plot and the blame can only lie squarely on the shoulders of modern society itself.

The way that certain types of behaviour have become acceptable, signals the start of the spiral. Kids will push things as far as they can just to see what they can get away with. As a parent, I have been an unwilling participant in this game many a time. I’m not a tyrant but there is a certain code of behaviour that I expect and my kids know where the line is.
That said, I’m not blind to the fact that we are all different and different things are acceptable through a different pair of eyes.

What makes someone get totally shit faced before getting on a train then proceeding to rabbit complete bollocks for four hours at a volume that would normally incur an ASBO is the fact that they know they can get away with it.

People are now scared to challenge such behaviour.

The quality of language, while not particularly offensive to me, clearly made the younger and older passengers uncomfortable.
The worst of all was the moment of silence that fell between the Zeppelin songs my iPod was feeding me in order to drown him out.
I can't be certain, but I could swear, when he put his phone onto loudspeaker, that his partner was indulging in some phone sex.

Either that or she was taking advantage of the peace and quiet and getting some of the real thing from the milky.

Either way, the whole episode made me thankful that I won't have to use a train again for some time.
At least that's what I thought.

...don't just sit there feeling stressed...

“What do you do for a living?”
“I’m an ar5ehole stretcher”

“A what?”
“An ar5ehole stretcher”

“How come?”
“It’s what I’m good at”

“What, stretching ar5eholes?”
“Yup”

“So how does that go?”
“Well, you start with a finger, then two...
Ping – make a vee, slip in a third then, before you know it, a fist then an arm gets you to about a foot. Then you can get a toe in. Big heave and bingo, five feet. Job done!”

“Five feet?”
“Sure”

“Just five feet? Why not more?”
“No need”

“Why not? Why not 7ft or 6ft?”
“NO NEED”

“oh well"...

Sometimes life is like one big f4cking joke with no punchline. You can kinda guess what’s coming but you’re never really sure and even though you know its gonna be crap you still do it anyway...

...so the weekend trip to York rekindled my love affair with the charms of rail travel and the divine comedy that is National Express.

Just as Neil Hannon foretold, there is indeed a jolly hostess serving crisps and teas. What Mr Hannon failed to observe was that there would be an ignorant short arsed little f4cker wearing a ticket collectors disguise, blessed with all the charm of a Gestapo lieutenant, peddling feeble excuses and specialising in arrogant stupidity.
Who on earth came up with such notional stupidity as to give this useless shower of pisspots the contract to bail out the financially bereft GNER?
In reality they’re no better and no worse than any of the others. I have had occasion to be trampled under the collective and singular jackboots of GNER, Virgin, Railtrack and Scotrail in their attempts to navigate me from one end of the country to the other.
At least on this occasion, they did manage to get the carriage attached to the train unlike the time when, on a return trip from Aberystwyth, the final leg northwards from Edinburgh was spent standing because the carriage with our reserved seats had been removed from the train. Fortunately, on that occasion, three, slightly drunken, Geordies heading offshore, were our redeemers, offering my wife and two kids drinks of water and seats upon their luggage. This is why I dislike stereotyping. Just because someone is boozy, or because the have dirt beneath their fingernails and speak with the wrong accent, doesn't make them any less of a gentleman.
On another occasion, travelling with my family, with seat reservations to keep us together, we ended up scattered all over the train. On raising the issue with the conductor, so spineless was he that, rather than counter the rugby fans sitting in our seats, his response was to moved us to 1st class - a bit of a cop out on his part.
Looking back, it was OK for us but potentially a bit of a problem for the dear old ladies in 1st should any childish misbehaviour spark off between my two little darlings. I suspect this is the crux of the problem, failure to take responsibility.
Failure to be accountable! Just plain failure!

This latest episode in the family travelling saga amounted to nothing more than a computer failure causing the reservations not to be printed, leaving passengers free sit wherever they pleased.
Fare do, not the fault of train staff but the hopeless attitude of the toxic little twat in the uniform was of no consolation to those who would later be accused of stealing reserved seats.
Nor was his excuse that "computers break down all the time and that nothing can be done if its a mechanical failure" [sic].
Ooooops - red rag - bull - china shop - banzai - David Banner moment on the horizon.

Where did they find such an arrogant little James Blunt - not only did he know the square root of f4ck all about computers but he obviously couldn't tell the difference between an electronic device and a mechanical device.

Perhaps the time wasted producing useless glossy brochures, overpriced coffees and free wireless connections would be better spent by putting a little more effort into getting trains running on time, where every ticket is seat allocated and where the staff have sufficient skills and manners to deal with the passengers.
How the f4ck some of these people get jobs dealing with the public is beyond me.
Expecting a 5 foot f4ck all, balding, moustachioed, little attitude pasty** to be able to deal with discontented passengers maybe is a bit much. Giving him a uniform is definitely a big mistake, especially when he quite obviously feels that it compensates for his ineptitude, short arsedness and inability to deal with simple questions containing words of more than one syllable.
**bit like a cornish pasty - looks hard and burnt on the outside but is full of shite on the inside and as soon as you grab hold of one, it falls to bits

Perhaps National Express should take a leaf out of the PG tips handbook and employ chimpanzees.

Or better still, take the Alan Sugar school of business management -
"You're an arrogant wee shite - YOU'RE FIRED".

At the end of it all, York was great but next time, I’ll be getting my own way and travelling at my own convenience and comfort, with me at the wheel.
The return journey, although furnished with reserved seats, proceeded to take us on a magical mystery tour of Scotland.
After detouring through Larbert, Falkirk, Stirling and Perth, I wouldn’t have been surprised to have seen Ben Nevis winging into view.

Little wonder is it that we are a nation of drivers, comfortable, only in our own space.
No wonder the government can’t get the public back on public transport.

The punchline of course…

"….so what do you do with a five foot ar5ehole?”
"That's the easy bit.

Give it a uniform, a whistle and a ticket puncher and put it on a train from Aberdeen to London"

...and so the music...
Who else but Mr Nat Ex himself, the king of Irish charm, sophistication and sparkling repartee...

...when all ahead seemed dark as night...

Aaah.
Happiness is Hooli shaped.

Spring is here.
The days are getting longer and the sun no longer clings to the horizon with barely enough strength to spread its pasty rays beyond the impenetrable mist.

No. Spring is definitely here.

After a few days of sunshine and overnight rain, the tell tale signs are there.
The garden bursts into a blaze of daffs and tulips.
The lawns are duly given their first cut of the year. The edges are trimmed with geometric accuracy and military precision.
The compost heap is turned and the beautiful brown muck is spread on the waiting vegetable plot.
The hammock is hung, the guitar restrung and the fridge stocked with ice cold Coors.

In my f4cking dreams.

In reality, yes, the sun did rise above the horizon and we did get a week or so of decent weather but soon we had the sort of down pour you normally associate with monsoon season.

Yes, the garden is full of daffodils and tulips but it is also full of sticky willies, pee the beds, poppies and other assorted weeds.

Yes the grass was mown (not my job I should add) and the edges trimmed but 'mown the moss' would be a more accurate statement.

Yes the compost heap was turned (my job), but to be truthful, there were more roots and dry layers of grass than anything else and, oh my God, that moment when the spade split open the kids' hard-boiled easter eggs... Four week old, hard boiled easter eggs...

The hammock? Well I didn't have the balls to hang it.
After last years ceremonial unrolling in April, it pissed with rain right through to September.

As for the guitar, well, as any guitarist knows, the number of stab wounds you can sustain when restringing depends solely on the number of strings you play.
I personally play a 6, a 12 and an 8 string mandolin (not all at once of course - I'm not John Paul effing Jones).
That equals 26 strings plus another 6 for each of the electrics equals 38.
To do them all, I'd end up with hands like f4cking teabags.

One consolation out of all this is that the fridge is actually stocked with a couple of beers and is exactly where I'm headed now.

If you are a Gaelic speaker, apologies for any grammatical errors or lack of accents but this takes so long to put up that I can't be arsed with finding the short codes.
