I have added a number of new images to the repository page.

Developments

By admin | Filed in Uncategorized

The last few days have proved to be very exciting indeed!

One of Henry’s descendants, Sarah has made contact and has provided a wealth of detail on Henry’s family life. I have added a picture of Clara, Henry’s wife to the repository page.  Sarah has shared a number of stories from her mother which I will discuss at a later point.

Sarah’s mother was Henry’s granddaughter and she has recalled many fascinating details from her childhood, not least of which is that the family called Henry ‘Pops’!

Details like this really start to give Henry a much more human face, as up until now most of my information has come from his writings, which do not shed much light on the man as a person.

Not posted for a while…

By admin | Filed in Uncategorized

Sorry that I have not posted any updates for a while. This is not because nothing has been happening, it is because I have been lazy!

I have found a number of new pieces of information, nothing major but interesting none the less.

I have also been working on the introduction to a book I am writing with a number of colleagues.

I hope to start pitching the book in the new year, so you never know.

I have plans to visit a couple of places that hopefully have some more sources and will post stuff as and when I come across it.

Gramophone Discovery

By admin | Filed in Uncategorized

Well, how things work out sometimes! I sent the scans of Seymour’s gramophone catalogue to a gramophone enthusiast I have been talking to recently, and he posted them to a specialist gramophone forum.

You can see the post HERE

As you can see from the discussion it certainly caused a stir!

There is another thread HERE with images of the machine.

I am so proud to have played a part in saving what seems to be an incredibly rare piece of gramophone and Seymour  history.

There is a video of the machine being played on YouTube which i have added below

Amazing to actually hear the machine in action.

544 Caledonian Road Images

By admin | Filed in Uncategorized

As promised here is an image of the spot where 544 Caledonian Road once stood. The house on the other side of the road is 546.

I will try to find some pictures from the Islington archive if they exist.

544 Caledonian Road

By admin | Filed in Uncategorized

I visited 544 Caledonian Road on Friday (Seymour ran his gramophone business from there). Sadly the building has been knocked down and replaced with flats. I took some pictures that I will post soon, and I will contact the Islington archives to see if there are any pictures of the building before demolition.

Pamphlets

By admin | Filed in Uncategorized

I have added a page for Seymour’s pamphlets etc. Click HERE

I have added Seymour’s pamphlet ‘The Monomaniacs – A Fable in Finance.

This seems to be very apt in today’s situation

Kate Sharpley Library

By admin | Filed in Uncategorized

I have been meaning to post a thank you to Barry at the Kate Sharpley Library.

He has been a fantastic help recently, providing information and scans of the Revolutionary Review (Published by Seymour after the Anarchist came to an end). He has also scanned ‘The Physiology of Love’ a book produced by Seymour which I haven’t discussed here before. (look it up!)

I look forward to working with Barry over the next few months and really appreciate his and everyone’s interest in my search.

Gramophone ‘period’

By admin | Filed in Uncategorized

I have recently been contacted by a person who is interested in Seymour’s gramophone connections. I hope this will lead to more details about this part of Seymour’s life.

Already he has said that Seymour produced illegal copies of 78s and sold them.

Possible the first ever case of music piracy?

I will be posting more over the next few days, including hopefully some of the patents that Seymour secured.
