So one can't be an anti-racist and work in academia? Strange position. One can be led by the "evidence & truth" and conclude that racism should be opposed. I'd go as far to say it's hard not to reach that conclusion. I guess we can't all be as neutral as you.

I must have missed the memo which precluded people who were anti-racist & anti-fascist from being exceptional scholars in their field

Wait, this thread is your response to 150-plus peers with expertise - and frequently lived experience - of racism in society offering a public critique? "You're like Trump" "You shouldn't be an academic" "Define racism in a tweet" "We are Evidence & Truth and you are Ideology"?

The negative responses to this open letter are so lazy, and politically self-defeating, it pains me. I have NEVER called for restriction of freedom of speech and this open letter doesn't do so either. I'll explain MY position.

More than 150 academics in and around the field, that's who... I wonder why... Probably some big conspiracy or political correctness gone mad, rather than clearly denouncing the obvious mainstreaming of far right ideas.

Framing 'ethnic diversity' debate as about 'threat' mainstreams hate, say academics << This is an important response from anti-racist & anti-fascist academics to recent efforts to mainstream far right ideas & discourse. Hope all anti-racists support this

I signed this letter denouncing the mainstreaming far right ideas under academic credentials with 150 colleagues. This needs to stop and we must think about the impact of our work and the platforms we use

New piece: Auschwitz & anti-racism: the past (&racism) is another country by & me . In it, we respond to the plan to send racist Chelsea fans to Auschwitz for educ in the context of British racism, denial & nostalgia for empire

Guys, I found some "ethnic diversity is threatening the West" fans

step one: agree to debate whether migration is a 'threat' to the 'West' step two: define this debate motion as an 'empirical question' step three: define anyone who disagrees with you as 'fragile and outraged' step four: profit, somehow, I'm assuming

If the move is not ideologically far right, it is therefore either absolute naivety, terrible academic practice, or incredibly cheap opportunism. Either way, useful idiots or not, it participates in the mainstreaming of the far right, no ifs, no buts.

What matters is what purpose their actions serve and what impact they have. Bringing ethnicity and demographics to the table without having carefully thought about either is inexcusable when anyone with a little knowledge of the far right knows that this is dogwhistling

The far right loves them too as they provide them with a veneer of respectability, no matter how thin, and a platform. Therefore, the question is not whether these people are far right or not. It is irrelevant, just like it is irrelevant whether Trump is.

The media loves them as they whip up fear and foster cheap debate. Politicians also love them as they support a much needed diversion, towards 'cultural and identity issues' as opposed to the economy or the environment.
