What is Vimeo?
Straight up, Vimeo is the home for the videos you create. Vimeo is a community of respectful people who enjoy sharing, collaborating on, and watching videos made by people just like you. Vimeo's mission is to provide creators with a safe and positive environment to share their videos and connect with others, as well as to develop simple and elegant tools and features to present your videos to the people you want.

How do I pronounce Vimeo?
Vim (rhymes with him) ee (rhymes with bee) oh (rhymes with go). Vim-ee-oh is the correct pronunciation. It's like video with a "me" Or just try your best :)
-
▲
Will Vimeo always be free?
Yes, Vimeo will always offer a free service for our users. To help support Vimeo and take advantage of all the great tools and features Vimeo offers, we recommend upgrading to Vimeo Plus for $59.95 a year. Or, you can also give Plus as a gift for a friend or family member. Visit vimeo.com/plus to upgrade your account.

How do I get involved in the Vimeo Community?
One of the best aspects of Vimeo is our friendly community. Participating in the community is completely optional, but we believe that if you interact with the other users, you'll find the experience to be very rewarding.
The best way to get started is to upload something you've created. Vimeo Members will see you're an interesting and creative individual just like them. You should also watch videos and give feedback. When you're perusing Vimeo and you encounter a video you like, leave a comment. Tell that person what you think, why you like the video, or even what you think might help make it better. You can also click the 'Like' button to show your appreciation. Not only does this give the owner of the clip a good feeling, but now they are more likely to check out your videos in return. Then, if they comment on and 'Like' your clips, your videos will be brought to the attention of their contacts too, which will increase the amount of views and activity your clips receive as well.
Make contacts! If you see someone's videos you like, add them as a contact and subscribe to their videos. That way you will always see what they upload as well as see the videos they 'Like' on Vimeo. The more you interact, the more members of the community you will meet.
Get involved in the Community Forums. Try looking in the Projects Forum to see if there are any cool projects you can participate in. If you're new, Vimeo Projects are a great way to start making videos, and have fun with people from all over the world.
As long as you maintain a respectful attitude towards the people you encounter and explore the many creative videos our members upload, you can have a very positive experience on Vimeo. So explore a little and have fun! -

I don't know how to make videos. Where do I even start?
You don't need to be a Steven Speilberg to make videos. All you just need is a camera, and a little motivation. There are all kinds of videos on Vimeo made by all kinds of different people. Some people make videos with their little digital point and shoot camera that has video, others are professionals who make a living from making videos, then there are the people in between who make edited videos with slightly nicer video cameras. Whatever kind of video creator you may be, there are always great videos on Vimeo to get inspired by and we love any kind of video you create.
If you're a beginner, start by making a video of what's in your refrigerator and upload that. If you're feeling slightly more jazzed, try editing a video using an editing program. Most computers come with some sort of basic editing software, and the more you practice editing video with it, the more rewarding it will be. To practice editing a video, try making a 5 Vignettes - 5, 5 second video clips put together to make a short video. As you become more familiar with editing, try to make similar videos that you find on Vimeo. You can also join different Groups and ask other users questions about how they make their videos.
Go for it! -
▲
What are the recommended settings for uploading a video?
Okay, we're going to be honest with you: there's no way we can make exporting/compression guides for every kind of video software on the market. It's just overwhelming! However, we do want to give you some guidelines for compressing your videos for Vimeo, so look over these tips, find the corresponding settings in your software, and you should be able to make it work for you. Note: Sometimes these settings are in "Advanced" or "Options" when exporting.
Codec
A codec is the format in which your video will be encoded. Different codecs have different features and varying quality. For best results, we recommend using H.264 (sometimes referred to as MP4) for the video codec and AAC (short for Advanced Audio Codec) for the audio codec. If you're on a Windows machine, WMV3 is a good choice for video codec.
Frame rate & Keyframes
If there is an option that says "current," it is best to just go with that. Otherwise, this is usually 30 fps (frames per second) for USA, Canada, and Japan, while in Europe and rest of the world it's usually 25 fps. If there is an option for keyframes, use the same value you used for framerate.
We do not change the frame rate of your video if it is under 30fps. However, anything faster than that will be capped at 30fps.
Data rate
This setting controls both the visual quality of the video and how big the file will be. In most video editors, this is done in terms of kilobits per second (kbits/sec or kbps). Use 2000 kbits/sec for standard definition 4:3 video, 3000 kbits/sec for widescreen DV, or 5000 kbits/sec for high definition footage.
Deinterlace
If you have this option, enable it. If you shoot in DV format, this is an especially important. If you do not deinterlace, you will often get weird-looking horizontal lines in your video.
Resolution
640x480 for standard definition 4:3 video, 853x480 for widescreen DV, or 1280x720 for high definition. It is also best to export 1920x1080 or 1440x1080 video as 1280x720 too, since we will automatically scale it down. If you have the option to control the pixel aspect ratio (not display aspect ratio) make sure it's set to "1:1" or "1.00", also sometimes called "square pixels."
Audio Settings
Choose AAC for the audio codec. You'll want to set the bit rate to 320 kbps and the sample rate to 44.100 kHz.
Those are the basic principles that will apply to almost all of the video programs out there. Eugenia, an active member in the Vimeo community, has made some tutorials for specific programs that you can view:
• Tutorial: Vimeo exporting guides from many editors.
• Tutorial: From miniDV to Vimeo high quality.
Note
Our encoders don't like Apple ProRes codecs. They're very intense codecs that create a hassle for our machines. If you insist on using your own settings, please avoid using Apple ProRes. -

How do I upload a Video?
Go to the upload page. Or, you can click the 'Upload Video' button on the home page or find a link in the top navigation bar under the heading 'Upload'. That will bring you to the upload page where you can upload your video. Make sure you have thoroughly read the rules for what kind of videos you can upload (only ones you make yourself!) and hit the 'choose a file to upload' button, select the file you want to upload from your computer, and hit 'Select'. Your video will magically start uploading to our services and you will see a progress bar telling you how long it will take.
play
Note: slower connections and large files will take longer so please be patient.
After you video is finished uploading, it will go through a conversion process. You can monitor that process with a progress bar as well. While the video is converting you may leave that page and Vimeo will send you an email when its finished. Now that's not too hard, is it? -
▲
If something goes wrong, or doesn’t work, what should I do?
Try again! Sometimes the best way to fix a problem is to try it again. If your problem doesn’t work after multiple attempts, try holding down the shift button on your keyboard and pushing the reload button on your browser. This method resets the cache in your browser which will often clear up any problems. If this method still doesn’t work, quit your browser and reopen it and try again. If the problem still persists, look in the Help Center for answers.

▲
Can I use Vimeo for my business or for commercial purposes?
Vimeo is for noncommercial use only. If your intent is to use Vimeo as a hosting service for your business, or promoting a product or service, then you are not allowed to use Vimeo. For more information, please read the Community Guidelines.
-
▲
How do I get people to watch my videos?
Vimeo is not a sea of eyeballs that you must trick into increasing your view count. It is a vibrant community of intelligent and creative people. We strongly encourage you to find people who share your interests and connect with them here.
How do I do that? Interact with people!
The more you interact with the community by liking and commenting on their videos, the more they will be interested in watching your videos and getting to know you in return. To start, we recommend joining some Groups that may interest you or subscribing to some Channels. You should also think about participating in some of the many great Vimeo projects in our Projects Forum. -
▲
How do I get my videos featured?
The staff features videos that they think exemplify the best of the best of what Vimeo is all about. If you would like to have your video considered as a Staff Pick or added to the HD Channel, use the shoutbox in each channel to post a link to your video and we'll try to check it out. Please refrain from sending messages to Staff members to watch your videos, that doesn't work that well ;)

Set a variety of different outro settings that will display when the video ends. Choose 'videos' to display the latest three videos from your videos, channels, groups, our albums. Choose 'These three videos' to pick specific videos, choose 'text' to write your own outro text (basic html allowed), choose 'a link' to display a link to another site, or simply choose 'nothing' if you would like a black screen to display.
Everything else:
Use the settings to completely customize the embedded video player. Remember, you can always preview your changes to make sure the player looks exactly the way you want. -
▲

▲

Please remember that using the 'replace' function will still use your weekly quota unless you replace the video within the same quota week you uploaded it.
-
▲
Will you go back and convert all my older videos to the higher quality conversion?
We're sorry, but we do not have the resources to re-process the back catalog of every Plus user's videos. Doing so would create an unacceptably long conversion queue for all users of Vimeo. However, you may always reconvert videos to the higher quality conversion (if applicable) under 'video file' in any of your video's settings.

What is the difference between Vimeo PRO and Vimeo Plus?
Is PRO better than Plus?
PRO is different from Plus, but not necessarily better. PRO is specifically made for companies, businesses and some professionals who are interested in using Vimeo for business and commercial use. PRO is not an upgrade path from Plus. While PRO offers several features that are not available with Plus, it limits bandwidth and Community involvement. It’s up to you to compare and decide which service is best for you. If you are a business, or want to upload commercial content, then Vimeo PRO is what you need.
Vimeo Plus is intended for individuals who want more features than a Basic (free) account, however Vimeo Plus users may not upload videos that are commercial and that are intended to sell or promote a product or service. -
▲
What is the Vimeo PRO Community Pass?
What happens when I turn on the Community Pass?
As a Vimeo PRO member, your account and your videos are automatically hidden from Vimeo.com because PRO allows for commercial use. If you are interested in enabling the Community Pass, you will have the option to show your videos on Vimeo.com. Your actions (videos, comments, messages) must strictly abide by the Guidelines of Vimeo.com. Any Plays on your videos that appear on Vimeo.com will not be counted against your 250,000 PRO Plays. Only embedded Plays count against your PRO Play quota.
A few rules to follow when a PRO account enables the Community Pass:
- You may not use the Community Pass to promote your company, products, or services. Your videos must be non-commercial and created by you — just because you have permission to upload a video, doesn’t mean you created it.
- You may not use the private messaging or video/Group/Channel commenting systems to sell or promote your products or services to the Vimeo.com Community.
- You may not add commercial content to Vimeo.com.
The Community Pass is located in your Account Settings under the Status tab. -
▲
What are the uploading guidelines for Vimeo PRO?
What are the uploading guidelines for Vimeo PRO?
Please read our PRO Guidelines.
If you have enabled the Community Pass, then you must abide by the Community Guidelines whenever you make a video public within the Community on Vimeo.com -

▲
What are the play limits for Vimeo PRO?
Vimeo PRO gives you unlimited on-site plays and up to 250,000 embed Plays. Add-on packages of 100,000 plays are available for purchase in our Vimeo Store.
Your Play limit resets to 250,000 when your Vimeo PRO account renews. Unused Plays from add-on packages will roll over for two years. -
▲
Will my unused Vimeo PRO Plays roll over?
When your Vimeo PRO renews, your account resets with a fresh 250,000 Plays. Unused Plays from add-on packages will roll over for two years.
-
▲
What are the bandwidth restrictions with Vimeo PRO?
As of now, we only enforce a limit on Plays. You can buy add-on Play packages in the Vimeo Store if you run low.
-
▲
What is considered a Vimeo PRO Play?

Once you’ve created a Portfolio, you can choose from our available default Themes that give your Portfolio a unique look and feel. You can choose which details will be displayed along with your videos, and also customize the color scheme, upload a background image and a header logo. For the CSS masters out there, we allow you to change any CSS on your portfolio pages.
PRO members can access Portfolio Themes by going to My Portfolio, selecting Settings, and then Appearance. -

How do I setup my custom domain with my Vimeo PRO Portfolio?
As a Vimeo PRO member, you can use a custom domain name for your Portfolios (example: example.com). You can easily use a domain you already own, or purchase a domain name elsewhere, then follow these instructions. If you already own the domain name you want to use, you can skip step number 1.
Note: Unfortunately the Vimeo staff will not be able to offer support for all the issues or problems that may occur when setting up a domain. We strongly suggest asking a friend who has done this before for help, or see if one of your fellow Vimeo members can give any advice here in our PRO Domain Forum.
1. Purchase the domain name from a registrar such as GoDaddy, Me-Net, or Register.com. This can be done for about $10 per year.
2. If you want your Portfolio to live on your top-level domain such as “example.com” then you will want to follow the registrar’s instructions to set the domain’s A-Record to 74.113.233.155
Learn more about A-Records here.
3. If you want your portfolio to live on a subdomain such as “videos.example.com” then you will need to add a CNAME Record pointing to vimeopro.com
Learn more about CNAME records here.
4. You may have to wait up to 72 hours for these changes to take effect on the whole Internets.
5. You can test your domain by using the “check domain” link on the Portfolio settings page. -

What is a Video Review Page?
Video Review Pages are semi-private, unlisted video pages intended for sharing with clients, collaborators, internal use, or anyone else you want to share your video with. These pages are unbranded and accept anonymous comments, so even people who don’t have Vimeo accounts can leave feedback.
Video Review Pages are automatically created whenever you upload a video, and can be accessed via a link on top of normal video pages and in the ‘About This Video’ box underneath your video. You can also password-protect Video Review Pages in your videos ‘Settings’, represented by the gear icon on the top right of any video page. -

- Your account will be removed.
- Your videos, including source files, will be removed.
- All your Portfolios will be removed.
- Any videos that were embedded offsite will no longer exist.
- Any custom domains you are using will no longer direct to your Portfolios.
- If opted in to the Community Pass, all of the public actions you took on Vimeo will also be removed. This includes all likes, comments, or messages you made. Channels, Groups, and Albums you created will also be removed. -
▲
Will my Vimeo PRO videos work on mobile devices, tablets, and TVs?
Yes! To lean more, check out the Vimeo Everywhere page.
-
▲
Can I use my own logo in the Vimeo PRO player?
Yes, you can upload a custom logo to use in your PRO player. Your logo will only show up on videos embedded outside of Portfolios and Video Review Pages. We recommend using transparent 100×100 png files, but you can upload whatever you want.
To upload a logo, visit your Account Settings and click the Player Logo tab. -
▲
Can I store and access my original source file with Vimeo PRO?
File storage is expensive!
You can really help us out by not to storing your original source files on Vimeo. Remember, we convert all your uploaded files to industry standard, compatible formats that are often just as good as your source files, and those will always be available to download. If you do wish to store your source files, go to your account settings page under the Me drop-down menu, then to the Preferences tab. Check the box that says “Keep my source video files.” -
▲
My Vimeo PRO account is about to expire. What should I do?
When your PRO account is close to its expiration date, you will receive a friendly email reminder.
Vimeo PRO accounts are set to automatically renew, so unless you have disabled auto-renewal in your Account Settings menu, you won’t need to do anything at all to enjoy another year of exclusive, customizable Portfolios, in-depth analytics, in-player logos, private/client video pages, custom domains to showcase your work, and more! -

What if I require a refund for Vimeo PRO?
We have a 30 day refund policy. Unfortunately any accounts requesting a refund beyond the 30 day mark will not be refunded. You will need to contact support[at]vimeo[dot]com to inquire about your Vimeo PRO refund.

What happens when I convert my Plus account to PRO?
If you choose to convert your Plus account to PRO, the following changes will occur:
- Your bandwidth will be limited to 250,000 plays per year. Add-on packages are available if you need more Plays in the Vimeo Store.
- Your storage limit will be set at 50 GB per year. Add-on packages are available if you need more storage space in the Vimeo Store.
- Every new video you upload will automatically be set to private. You can manually toggle the privacy to public in your video settings.
- Your Vimeo PRO account will renew at a new price. You can get all your Vimeo PRO account details in your Account History. -
▲
Am I allowed to charge for access to my Vimeo PRO videos?
Yes, with Vimeo PRO you are allowed to charge access to your videos that are embedded on your personal website. Setting up the system to charge them is up to you. Unfortunately we can not provide support of ways to charge for access to videos.
-
▲
Why do add-on packages cost as much as PRO?
You may have noticed that our add-on packages are priced equally to our baseline Vimeo PRO offering. When you buy PRO, you are initially allotted 50GB's of upload space per year and 250K of offsite or embed plays. Extra storage capacity or plays are priced similarly to our base offering because, to be very transparent, our base package is pretty much the lowest possible price we can offer without substantial revenue loss. Additional packages allow us to make back incremental revenue that is lost when PRO members use up all their space and storage. The vast majority of PRO members will not reach their limits, which means it is easier for us to charge a lower price for everyone. When a PRO member does reach their account limits, the add-on packages help us keep Vimeo humming along as one of the most affordable video sharing platforms out there. In summary, we try very hard to give everyone the best deal possible, even if that means we don't make a lot off of our heavy-use PRO members.

How do I share a video with my friends and family?
You can share a video with anyone, even people who are not members of Vimeo. Move your mouse over the video window. This will bring up the video controls. Click the 'Share' button. Now you can enter email addresses for non-members or Vimeo members' user names. Add a personal message if you'd like, then click the 'share' button. They will receive an email with a link to your video. That's it!
-
▲
Can I upload more than one video at a time?
No, you may only upload one video at a time.
-
▲
How many videos can I upload?
Basic account users can upload 500 MB a week (with a max of 10 files per day). Plus users can upload 5 GB per week, and there is no per-day upload limit.
This quota resets weekly, and your personal reset day can be seen on the right side of the Upload Page, along with how much space you have remaining this week. Videos that you upload remain on the site, so you can upload 500 MB of videos this week, and another 500 MB next week, and they'll all be there for the watchin'. -
▲
Are there limits on file sizes or file types for uploads?
There is a 5 GB per file limit for Plus users, which does not affect Basic account users.
We accept the following file types: asf, asx, avi, divx, dv, dvx, m4v, mov, mp4, mpeg, mpg, qt, wmv, 3g2, 3gp, 3ivx and 3vx
Please note: There are a million variables in video compression. Sometimes, even though a file type is accepted by the Vimeo uploader, the Vimeo conversion will fail. Take a look at our recommended compression settings to make sure your video plays well with Vimeo. -
▲
What is compression? Should I compress my videos before uploading them?
Compressing a video reduces the file size. While it can take time to compress a video, it will be a faster upload, and also a faster download for anyone you choose to share the original file with. We strongly recommend you compress the videos you upload to Vimeo. You'll be able to upload more videos that way!
Please see our compression suggestions for the best advice on how to do it. -

Can I ever access/download the original video file I uploaded?
File storage is expensive!
You can really help us out by not to storing your original source files on Vimeo. Remember, we convert all your uploaded files to industry standard, compatible formats that are often just as good as your source files, and those will always be available to download.
If you are Plus and do choose to store your source files, they will be available for as long as you remain Plus, and for 30 days after your Plus expires.
Basic accounts' original source files are stored for one week from the upload date, after which they are removed. After one week you will still be able to download the converted file (in MP4 format).
Plus users can opt in to having their original source files stored with no time restrictions. Go to your account settings page under the Me drop-down menu, then to the Preferences tab. Check the box that says "Keep my source video files." -
▲
How do I download the source file? All I get is a new window with the video playing.
Is your browser loading and playing the video instead of downloading it? Try right-clicking the download link and choosing the "Save as" option.
-
▲
Are there limits on downloading original video files?
We feel that it's important to allow users to download the original, uploaded video file, if the owner of the video chooses to allow it. We provide this feature so that you can see the video
exactly as the videomaker intended it to be seen. However, we also have to guard against over-use of this feature. By being cautious with our bandwidth costs, we will be able to provide the Vimeo for years to come; hopefully until your great-grandkids log on to watch your videos.
Vimeo members with Basic accounts are limited to downloading 5 original video files in a 24-hour period. Each original video file on Vimeo can be downloaded a maximum of 100 times per day. Please note that users with Basic accounts have the ability to make available their original source file for up to one week from the upload date. After that time only the converted, MP4, version of the video will be down-loadable. Plus users always have the ability to make available and download their original source files.
Just to be totally clear here, we're talking about the video file that you uploaded, and which can be downloaded using the link on the right side of the page where you watch the video. This restriction is not related to the streaming video you watch in the Vimeo player. -
▲
I want to use a video I saw on Vimeo. Do I need permission?
Yes, it's always a good idea to contact the video maker if you want to use a video. Our members retain copyright of their works, and it's up to them what type of use they choose to allow.

I uploaded an HD video on Vimeo and it didn't show up in HD, what gives?
First thing's first, make sure you actually uploaded an HD video. Please be advised that in order to receive the HD treatment, your HD video needs to be greater than 4:3 aspect ratio and at least 1280 pixels wide.
Vimeo allows Basic members to upload one HD video per week, so if you upload two HD videos within the same week, only the first will show in HD, the other will appear in SD.
If an unusual amount of time has passed, and the HD version is still not up, make sure you are using our recommended compression settings and try again. -
▲
How do I see the stats on my video?

▲
Why are videos stuttering?
We know stuttering is annoying, and there are many possible reasons why you may be experiencing poor video playback. Vimeo requires a better than average internet connection and computer processor, so if you have a slow connection or older computer, you may experience issues. If not, here are a few things you can try:
1) Make sure you have the latest version of Flash running on your computer. You can check what version you have here: vimeo.com/help/flash
2) Please turn off any other programs, virus protection, ad block, or energy saving settings as they may interfere with video playback.
3) Try closing other browser taps if you have many opened.
4) Try another browser and see if that helps.
Important! In general, videos with fast camera pans, quick zooms in and out, fast moving subjects (think nascar races) or sudden changes in light conditions do not compress well. -
▲
What is the maximum video file size and length?
Your video can be as long as you like. The only limit is your file size. If you have a basic account, you are limited to 500 MB per week. However if you upgrade to Plus, you get 5 gigs of upload space per week, with a limit of 5GB per file. To find out more about Vimeo Plus go to vimeo.com/plus
-
▲
What does “Scaling On” mean?
This means the video is being stretched to fit your screen in full screen mode. If you click the 'Scaling off' button in the player, you will see the actual size of the video, without any enlargement.
-
▲
Can I create chapters for different parts of my video?
Kind of. We have a timestamp feature that allows you to link to different times in a video from the description. To timestamp a video, put the specific time of the video you would like to link to. For example, writing 2:32 in the description, will send a viewer to the 2 minute, 32 second mark after the video loads. You may add as many timestamps as you so please.

How do I make mobile versions of my videos?
Plus users can make mobile versions of their videos two ways.

2. Plus users can make mobile versions of their videos by going to their Global Settings page and checking the "Yes, make my videos mobile-ready" box. You can also do so from any video's settings page and clicking on the Video File tab, then checking the same box and saving the changes.
Once you choose to make mobile versions of your videos every new video you upload will get a mobile version and all of your existing videos will be queued up to be converted. -
▲
Can I loop a video?
Sure can! To loop a video, right click on the player and click 'loop is off', thereby turning 'loop on'. Looping a video will make the video repeat without having to push play over and over and over and over and over.
-
▲
Does Vimeo support closed captioning?
Vimeo does not currently support the use of separate closed captioning text files. If you want any kind of text to appear in your video, including closed captioning, it needs to be added to the actual video, like any other graphics.
We hope to have time to develop proper support for closed captioning soon. -
▲
What is Creative Commons?
The idea underlying Creative Commons is that some people may not want to exercise all of the intellectual property rights the law affords them. We believe there is an unmet demand for an easy yet reliable way to tell the world “Some rights reserved” or even “No rights reserved.” Many people have long since concluded that all-out copyright doesn't help them gain the exposure and widespread distribution they want. Many entrepreneurs and artists have come to prefer relying on innovative business models rather than full-fledged copyright to secure a return on their creative investment. Still others get fulfillment from contributing to and participating in an intellectual commons. For whatever reasons, it is clear that many citizens of the Internet want to share their work -- and the power to reuse, modify, and distribute their work -- with others on generous terms. Creative Commons intends to help people express this preference for sharing by offering the world a set of licenses on our Website, at no charge.
Learn more about Creative Commons here! -
▲
How do I add Creative Commons licensing for my videos?
If you want to apply a Creative Commons license to your videos, simply go to your video page and click the settings gear located under the search box. Open the tab labeled "License" and select the type of Creative Commons license you want to apply to your video.
-
▲
Do I have to put Creative Commons licenses on my videos?
No, you don't have to add Creative Commons licensing to your videos, but it is a great way to share and collaborate with others. Some Vimeans want to share their work -- and the power to reuse, modify, and distribute their work -- with others on generous terms. Creative Commons intends to help people express this preference for sharing by offering the world a set of licenses.
-
▲
What do the different Creative Commons licenses mean?
Attribution -- You let others copy, distribute, display, and perform your copyrighted work — and derivative works based upon it — but only if they give credit the way you request.
Share Alike -- You allow others to distribute derivative works only under a license identical to the license that governs your work
Non-Commercial -- You let others copy, distribute, display, and perform your work — and derivative works based upon it — but for non-commercial purposes only
No Derivative Works -- You let others copy, distribute, display, and perform only verbatim copies of your work, not derivative works based upon it.
You can also choose different combinations of these licenses. For more in-depth information including license deeds and legal codes, please visit the Creative Commons about page. -
▲

• My contacts will only be available to your contacts on Vimeo.

What are tags?
Tags are keywords or terms that describe your video. For example, if you tag your Hawaii vacation video with the words 'Hawaii' and 'vacation', you'll be able to easily find other related videos and it makes it easier for other Vimeo users to find your videos. Everybody wins!
-
▲
Is there a limit on the number of tags I can add to a video?
You are limited to 20 tags on your videos. We encourage you to add only relevant tags as too many tags can make your video harder to find.
-
▲
Why should I tag my videos?
Tagging your videos makes it easier for other Vimeo users to find them in searches and on tags pages. This way, folks can find your videos that interest them more easily.
-
▲
I've tagged my videos, why aren't my they appearing in searches?
If you have just recently uploaded a new video, or just recently made it public, it may take a little while to show up in our search results. If your videos do not appear in search results after a day, try adding more relevant terms to the description or title of your video, that will help.
-

What does 'embedding' mean?
Embedding allows you to take a video - or someone else's video - and post it on a web page outside of Vimeo. For example, you can embed a video into your blog and then people can watch your video there instead of having to go to Vimeo to watch it.
-
▲

A load is counted each time the video player loads on any page, either on Vimeo.com or embedded on another website. A play is counted each time someone pushes the play button on a video on Vimeo or embedded elsewhere.
-
▲
Why can't I see where my video is embedded?
Only Plus members are able to see exactly where their videos are embedded outside of Vimeo.com. If you're a Basic user, you will need to upgrade your account to Plus to see where your videos are being embedded. Learn more about Plus here.

You need Advanced Stats because you need to know!
-
▲
Why do I not have stats for certain data elements?

▲
What happens when I add someone as a contact?
When you add a contact, Vimeo automatically subscribes you to their videos, and the videos they like so you will see them in your inbox.
-
▲
What is the difference between adding a contact and subscribing to someone's videos?
Adding someone as a contact let's them know you are a fan of their videos. Subscribing to someone's videos will make their videos show up in your inbox. You can subscribe to someone's videos without making them a contact or can also make someone a contact without subscribing to their videos. However, most people do both!
-
▲
Can I add anyone as a contact?
You can add anyone as a contact.
-
▲
Is it okay to add people as contacts if I don't know them?
Sure. Ask yourself this questions: Do I want to watch this users' videos? If so, then make them a contact and maybe leave them a message telling them what you think of their videos. Remember, adding contacts can be a way to bookmark the people you like on Vimeo, as well as keep up to date on the videos they upload and the videos they like. Adding thousands of contacts does not mean that those users will see your video, it just means you will see theirs! Also, adding over 1000 contacts can often lead to slow loading times on your homepage and subscription pages because Vimeo has to load tons of your contacts' data!
-
▲
Can I block someone from adding me as a contact?
No, anyone can add anyone as a contact. If someone gives you trouble or if you are worried about someone who has added you, please alert our Support Staff at abuse[at]vimeo[dot]com
-
▲
Why should I add people as contacts?
It's a social sign of goodwill and shows them you are a fan of his or her videos. Your contacts will also be the first people to show up when you want to use sharing features.
-
▲
Is there a limit on the number of contacts I can have?
You are limited to adding 1,000 contacts. This is to ensure optimal site performance. Choose wisely!
-
▲
What if I don't want to be someone's contact?
There is currently no way to block users from adding you as a contact.
-
▲
If I remove someone from my contacts are they notified?
No, there is no notification when someone decides to remove a contact.

My upload stopped or got stuck at a certain percentage. Why can't I upload to Vimeo?
Make sure your connection to the Internet is rock solid. Try not to have too much going on in other tabs or browsers as long files tend to get hung up if there is too much other activity. Please turn off any virus protection or ad block, or energy saving settings! If you still have trouble, make sure you are running the latest version of your Flash Player - vimeo.com/help/flash
Then go to your video file. Make sure your video is exported to these settings: vimeo.com/help/compression The closer you are to those settings, the more easily your source file will upload to Vimeo. -
▲
My video progress bar jumped to 99% or 100% right away, but my video didn't upload. What do I do?
Try the flash uploader and make sure the file name doesn't have any spaces or symbols in it. If you still have trouble, make sure you are running the latest version of your Flash Player. Download the latest version of Flash here: get.adobe.com/flashplayer/

▲
I uploaded a 16:9 (widescreen) video but Vimeo squished it to 4:3, what gives?
Vimeo uses square pixels when converting your video. You will need to export your videos with square pixels and manually set your aspect ratio to 853x480 for widescreen DV, or 1280x720 for high definition. Read our recommended compression settings for more information.
-
▲
Can I upload a video with any aspect ratio I want?

No, you may only upload one video at a time.
-
▲
Can I upload any kind of video I want?

Vimeo doesn't recognize my file extension, but it is one of the file formats accepted. What can I do?
Acceptable video formats include asf, asx, avi, divx, dv, dvx, m4v, mov, mp4, mpeg, mpg, qt, wmv, 3g2, 3gp, 3ivx and 3vx. For best results, try to encode videos using our recommended compression settings.
-
▲
Why does my video have no sound? Why does the sound cut out on my video?
If you're having audio problems, you will most likely need to export your video with our recommended compression settings.
-
▲
What happens if I upload a video without editing any information?
If you do not edit any of your information, your video will be made private. Your video will also show up as "Untitled" with no description or tags. You should definitely edit these so people can more easily find your video. To edit these settings, go to the video page and click 'Settings.' From there you can edit the title, tags, and description.
-
▲
What happened to my fade to black?
Occasionally issues with black or blank frames being dropped or lost can crop up. This is because editing programs tend to drop the frame rate in clip portions that are black to 1FPS, which can be then be interpreted as blank by the Vimeo system, this can cause sync issues. An easy fix is to insert a "slug" (also known as a black shape or image) to keep the frame rate normal in the editor, therefore keeping your videos and our machines happy!
play -
▲
Why am I getting an error saying my file is too small to upload?
Videos have to be at least 200KB in size to be valid. This is because many people accidentally create "reference movies" when trying to export from QuickTime and other video editing programs. Reference files don't contain any actual video, just links to the files. When exporting from QuickTime, always choose the "save as self-contained" option.
-
▲
Are there any programs that work together with Vimeo?
Yes indeed! A handful of programs come preset to make your Vimeo experience easier than ever before.
iMovie ’11
Thanks to a feature that allows you to export and upload your video directly from the Share menu in iMovie, getting your video to Vimeo is a breeze. To learn more about this, head over to our in depth tutorial at the Vimeo Video School: vimeo.com/videoschool/lesson/39

What is HD?
HD stands for “high definition”, which is the highest quality form of video available today. HD video is richer, clearer, and more life-like than standard TV and even DVDs. It’s a major leap in technology that doesn’t take an expert to appreciate.
-
▲
Is it the same as HDTV?
HDTV is one of the first major applications of high definition video. Because HD requires so much more data than regular TV, engineers devised a way to broadcast TV signals as compressed digital information rather than directly over analog waves. They defined two video formats for HDTV called 720p and 1080i, which refer to the number of horizontal lines used to produce the image.
-
▲
Is Vimeo HD the same as HDTV?
Vimeo presents HD in the 720p format, exactly the same resolution (1280×720) used by major broadcast networks like ABC, FOX, and many cable & satellite providers.
-
▲
How can I start watching Vimeo videos in HD right now?
Visit the Vimeo HD Channel and watch any of the clips in full screen mode, you'll see why HD is amazing.
-
▲
But wait, it can't really be HD… can it?
Yes! It’s real, true, actual high definition. No tricks! Some other sites (we won’t name names) and even a few major media producers have been offering low resolution video as “HD” just because it’s slightly higher than the quality typically seen on video sharing web sites, hoping you won’t notice. Don’t be fooled, Vimeo HD is true 1280×720, up to 30fps in MP4 media format.
-
▲
Can I upload in HD right now?
Yes. To take advantage of HD, all you have to do is upload a clip that’s 1280×720 resolution or better. Our servers will make a standard quality version first, then a little later your clip will appear in HD.
-
▲
Can you recommend some encoding settings for HD?
Yes. Basic account members enjoy a weekly quota of 500MB, so it’s a good idea to compress your video down from phenomenally high quality to just amazingly high quality.
We recommend using the H.264 codec at size 1280×720, bit rate 3000-5000 kbits/sec (optimized for “download”), key frame every 30 frames (frame reordering on), using whatever frame rate you shot in.
For sound, use AAC at 128kbps in stereo. -
▲
Should I deinterlace before I upload?
It's almost always a good idea. If you're outputting 1080i, deinterlace and resize to 1280×720 before you upload. In many cases if your final outcome is a progressive medium (web, LCD TVs, HD-DVD, etc.) you might be better off deinterlacing before you even start editing.
-
▲
Why is my video only 640×368?
HD video is so big that it can’t fit in the width of a regular web page, so we show it at half size. To see the whole image, go into full screen mode by clicking the full screen button in the lower right of the player. The native size of Vimeo HD files is 1280×720.
-
▲
What happens when I upload my HDV and AVCHD videos in 1440x1080?
Vimeo converts all HDV and AVCHD videos shot at 1440x1080 (aspect ratio 1.3333) to its correct and intended playback of 1280x720 (pixel aspect ratio 1.0000). What that means in English, is that 1440x1080 videos are shot in anamorphic (wide) standards instead of 16:9, and previously those videos would appear squished upon conversion to Vimeo. This change will affect anyone uploading their videos in letterbox 1440x1080, so we recommend not to letterbox videos at that aspect ratio.
-
▲
What happens if I upload 1920 x 1080 footage, will Vimeo accept it?
Vimeo will accept this footage and display it at 1280x720 resolution. However for better image quality we suggest resizing your video to 1280x720 prior to uploading. Plus and PRO members have the option to upload and display footage at 1920x1080. This option can be found in the video file tab under the video settings page. Please keep in mind that currently many computers and displays cannot properly run or display footage of such high resolution.
-
▲
Can I watch HD in native 1280×720 with no scaling?
Yes, click the full screen button in the lower right corner of the player, then click the button right above it 'scaling off' to toggle scaling. Your preference will be saved for all HD videos you watch.
-
▲
Do I need any special software to watch HD?
Nope, all you need is the current version of the Adobe Flash pluggin, which you probably already have. If you're not sure you can check by clicking here: get.adobe.com/flashplayer/
-
▲
Do I need a fast computer for HD?
We’ve found that most computers made in the last three or four years (running either Mac OS X or Windows) are fast enough to play butter-smooth HD. In some cases, you may realize a major performance gain by quitting unused programs and closing extra browser windows. Our player is designed to degrade the video quality gracefully if it detects that it’s dropping frames.
-
▲
Do I need a fast internet connection for HD videos?
Most residential cable and DSL connections should be more than adequate. If HD feels slow to load, trying turning off any background downloads or peer-to-peer sharing applications. Or push the play button in the player and then pause to let the video buffer before viewing.
-
▲
Is my monitor capable of showing HD?
All modern computer monitors are similar in resolution to HD, if not better. Your computer is a sleeping HD beast, Vimeo will rouse it from its slumber.
-
▲
Will Vimeo HD work with my HDTV?
Absolutely. If you can connect your computer to your HDTV (for example, using an inexpensive DVI to HDMI adapter) Vimeo will look gorgeous in full screen, comparable with broadcast digital TV.
-
▲
My HD video did not convert to an HD version on Vimeo, what should I do?
Vimeo allows Basic members to upload one HD video per week, so if you upload two HD videos within the same week, only the first will show in HD, the other will appear in SD.
If an unusual amount of time has passed, and the HD version is still not up, make sure you are using our recommended compression settings and try again. Please be advised that in order to receive the HD treatment, your HD video needs to have an aspect ratio of 4:3 or greater and be at least 1280 pixels wide (the only exception is that a 4:3 video with a resolution of 960x720 pixels will also be encoded to HD). -
▲
I just have a point and shoot pocket camera, can I still upload HD videos?/ Do I need a special camera to upload HD?
Point and shoot cameras that can take video in 1280x720 resolution are becoming more common these days. Check the specifications on your camera for details.
-
▲
Other sites have HD video and it's free, why should I use Vimeo?
Because Vimeo is the awesomest!
These days HD is becoming more and more common. What sets Vimeo apart from all the other sharing services is our amazing features for your videos and our wonderful community. You're not going to find a bunch of TV clips or video ads on Vimeo, but you will find creative videos and friendly people that you won't find anywhere else. Add to that an uncluttered design, tons of privacy options, great embedding features, amazing Channels and Groups for all sorts of interests, and friendly staff members who you can actually communicate with, why not join Vimeo? - Top / Close

I've found my videos on someone else's website and don't want them there, what do I do?
We recommend contacting the site administrator and asking them nicely to remove your videos. Another option is to make your videos private using any of the privacy settings. Or if you want total control, you can choose which specific sites can embed your video, a tool available with Vimeo Plus.

What is the Vimeo API and what can I do with it?
The Vimeo API, or Application Programming Interface, is a way for developers to gain access to certain parts of the Vimeo website in order to create application using data from Vimeo. The Simple API is a very simple interface to access lots of data from Vimeo. You can get data via JSON, XML, and serialized PHP. You do not need a Developer API Key to use the Simple API.
The Advanced APIis more complicated than the Simple API, but you can get a lot more data from it. You will need a Developer API Key to use the Advanced API. If you want to test out the Advanced API, head over to the Sandbox.

The site is acting weird! Things aren't doing what they are supposed to be doing. What gives??
If something doesn't work, Try again! You may also try signing out of your Vimeo account and signing back in. If the problem still persists, try looking in the forums for answers.

What is my inbox? Why do videos show up there?
Your inbox is where you see videos you are subscribed to. Anytime you subscribe to a users' videos or likes, they will show up in your inbox. Similarly, when you subscribe to a Channel or join a Group, videos added to those will show in your inbox when they are updated. We automatically subscribe you to the Staff Picks so you can see some awesome videos everyday, but you can always unsubscribe.
-
▲
How do I discover more videos I might like?
Lots of places! First you can start on the Discover Tab. The Discover Tab highlights the most 'liked' videos from the week.
Explore Channel to find videos curated around certain themes that might interest you. If you find Channels that look cool, subscribe to them and those videos will show up in your inbox whenever they are updated. Explore Channels!
Groups are also a great place to explore videos. Groups are communities within Vimeo that you can join and share videos with. There are TONS of Groups on Vimeo and we encourage you to join Groups to meet new people and find the great videos people create for that Group. Joining a Group also means any video added to that group will show up in our inbox so you can always see what gets added! Explore Groups!
As soon as you find videos that you like, we encourage you to explore the rest of that users' videos to see if you want to make them a contact. Adding someone as a contact automatically subscribes you to his or her videos and the videos he or she 'likes', which will show up in your inbox.
The Activity tab on your homepage is also another great way to discover videos that people are liking and commenting on right now. You can sort that activity by all users or your contacts only, to see what everyone is watching.
We recommend exploring the site and you'll find even more great ways to find videos you will enjoy! -

-
▲
Why do I have to name my project to download the track?
We need this so we can generate your music license. If you don’t have an official title, you can describe your project.
-
▲
Why can’t I find Lady Gaga’s music?
Music Store gets tracks from Audiosocket and Free Music Archive. These sites are filled with awesome creators just like Vimeo, and don’t contain tracks from mainstream recording artists.
-
▲
What’s a Personal License?
A Personal License allows you to use a song in a video for personal, non-commercial uses only. If you have a Personal license, you may share your video on the web or put it on a DVD to share with friends and family. However, you may not use the video to make money. In addition, businesses and other organizations (including non-profit entities) cannot use Personal Licenses.
-
▲
What’s a Limited Commercial License?
A Limited Commercial License allows you to use a song in a video (including a webisode or slideshow) that may be distributed on the web for commercial purposes. You must use a Commercial License if you are:
• A business or other organization (including a non-profit entity) that wishes to use a song in a video, regardless of whether the work is intended to make money.
• Any individual who wishes to use the song in a video to be submitted to a film festival (other than the Vimeo Festival & Awards).
• Any individual who wishes to use a song in a video for money-making purposes.
Ways you might make money from the video include:
• Putting it on your website if your website is ad-supported.
• Using it to advertise a product or service.
• Charging people to view it.
However, a Commercial License does not allow you to use a song to advertise a product or service. For an advertising license, please contact vimeolicensing@audiosocket.com. -
▲
What’s the proper way to attribute the tracks I use?
Some artists will require you give them attribution when using their songs. You can find out how to give them proper credit by clicking on the tracks title. On the tracks page, below the play button and track name, there will be a blue box containing the text they’d like you to add to your videos description. You can copy it and paste it right in when you’re ready!
-
▲
What do I do with the license?
Keep it your filing cabinet, your safe, lock it in a chest, tape it to your ceiling, just don’t lose it! You may need it in the future if you ever need to prove you have a license to use the song.
-
▲
What if I lose the music file I paid for?
No worries! Just check the My Downloads tab. You’ll always be able to re-download tracks you’ve purchased in the past.
-
▲
What if I don’t want my songs to contain profanity?
Some tracks in Music Store may have explicit lyrics. These will be marked next to the track name with a red bubble that says Explicit. If you’d prefer these don’t appear in your search results, open the advanced options and turn the Safe Search toggle to On.
-
▲
How do I remove a track from my cart?
When you add a track to your cart, you’ll see a black pop-up window appear in the lower right corner of the screen. Simply press the red X next to each track name to remove it from your cart.
-
▲
Can I put a video with licensed music on a DVD or other storage device?
If you have a Personal License, you may burn your video onto a DVD (or other storage device) to send to your family or friends for their personal, non-commercial viewing. But you may not make and distribute DVDs for any commercial purpose. If you have a commercial web and festival license, you may also burn your video onto a DVD to send to film festivals. If you want broader distribution rights, you will need to purchase a DVD distribution license.
-
▲
What if I want to use my video with the Limited Commercial License beyond web distribution?
Should you wish to obtain a license for certain activities, please contact vimeolicensing@audiosocket.com. For new licenses made within two (2) years of this your License, Licensor Audiosocket will provide perpetual, worldwide licenses for the following media and uses at the following rates:
-
▲
Can I use free music for commercial purposes?
In most cases, no. Most of the free tracks are subject to Noncommercial Creative Commons licenses. These licenses do not permit commercial use. However, if you’re looking to use an artist’s work commercially, you can contact the artist via their homepage or FMA profile.
-
▲
Who is the licensor of the free music tracks?
Each track is licensed by the individual artist.
-
▲
What is a Share Alike license?
If you’re using a track that is subject to a Creative Commons Share Alike license, the work that uses that track must also be made available to the public under the same license. For example, if the track is governed by an Attribution Noncommercial Share Alike license, any video that incorporates the track must be licensed to others under the same license. This means that others will be able to adapt your video for noncommercial purposes so long as they provide attribution and license any adaptation under the same terms.
