A gene therapy expert from the University of Pennsylvania has found a way of fighting cancer cells by introducing genetically modified cells into the bloodstream which multiply and seek out cancerous cells to kill.

A recent study saw 2 patients completely cancer free after a year and a 3rd with a huge improvement.

“It worked great. We were surprised it worked as well as it did,” said Dr. Carl June, a gene therapy expert at the University of Pennsylvania. “We’re just a year out now. We need to find out how long these remissions last.”

Stephen William Hawking is probably the most famous physicist in the world after Albert Einstein. He is an English cosmologist and theoretical physicist who published lots of scientific books. He was the Lucasian Professor of Mathematics for 30 years at the University of Cambridge. This is one of the world’s most prestigious academic posts. He retired in 2009 and now he is Director of Research at the Centre for Theoretical Cosmology in the Department of Applied Mathematics and Theoretical Physics at the University of Cambridge.
He had made influential discoveries in cosmology and quantum gravity and he had made important research in the field of the black holes. But one of his biggest accomplishments was in 2007, when Hawking participated to a space shift flight and became the first quadriplegic to float in zero-gravity. Besides being famous for his academic career and achievements in research, he is known all over the world for his terrible disease that has been holding him in a wheelchair for 40 years and for more than 25 years he is unable to speak.

Stephen Hawking suffers for a motor neuron disease which left him almost entirely paralyzed. The disease known as ALS, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis is characterized by rapidly progressive weakness and muscle atrophy. It also can have as effects: dysarthria, dysphasia and respiratory compromise. This progressive illness is fatal and the patients affected by it usually die of respiratory compromise and pneumonia after 2 to 3 years. But there are some patients who live more years than doctors give them. Hawking was diagnosed with this disease when he was only 21 years old and the doctors said he won`t survive more than 2-3 years. But he is still living and he has been struggling with this illness for more than 48 years now. It is uncommon for those who suffer for ALS to live more than 10 years after the diagnosis, but there are some cases when the living duration was exceeded with many years. Some of the longest durations, other than Hawking`s are 32 and 39 years.

In 1985 he contracted pneumonia while he was in Geneva and he had an emergency tracheotomy and lost his ability to speak. He uses an electronic voice synthesizer in order to speak and he seems to speak fluently with the help of that machine, but in reality it is not such an easy thing to do. The words are auto completing due to the predictive text setup, but when it comes to sentences, it takes time to construct them. Once, it took him seven minutes to answer a question and having a live conversation is very hard for him that is why his speeches are prepared before his appearances on TV or in other places.

Despite of his severe illness, Stephen has besides his career a family to be proud of. He married in 1965 Jane Wilde and they have 3 children together. Because of the progress of the disease, he and his first wife had a divorce and he got married for the second time with his nurse, Elaine Manson, but they separated in 2006.

Hawking appears on a new Discovbery series called Curiosity where he discusses in the premier episode the topic of who or what created the universe and the “Big Bang”.

In Australia farmers blame wallabies for creating these weird crop circles.
