Shinto Muso-ryu Jodo - Tachi otoshi kata
This is a demonstration of the classical japanese martial art Shinto Muso-ryu Jodo. It is a clip from the "Nihon Kobudo"-series(google it) featuring SMR. Shinto Muso-ryu was founded roughly 400 years ago by Muso Gonnosuke. History states that Gonnosuke was defeated in a duel with Miyamoto Musashi. After his defeat he had an insight and created techniques for use with the quarterstaff (128 cm. staff called Jo). Legend states he returned and defeated Musashi in a rematch. The whole Nihon Kobudo SMR-video features Omote, Chudan and Okuden kata series, (about 12 kata each), though this clip features one kata (tachi otoshi) from the Omote-series. The performers are Namitome Shigenori (staff) and Otofuji Ichizō (sword). *Edit* (thanks for correction of shidachis name)

Jodo for Dummies ダーミーの杖道
These are the 12 Jodo combos, in stop-motion animated form! Jodo is a Japanese martial art, kind of like a cross between Kendo and Iaido. You fight as a 'team', in that you never actually try to hit or hurt your opponent. One fighter uses a stick- the 'jo', while the other uses a wooden sword- 'tachi'. Jodo focuses mainly on defense and counter attack against an opponent wielding a katana. This video can give people new to the art a good idea about the general shape of the moves, but as it doesn't really focus on correct hand and foot placing, I would most definitely consider enlisting the help of an experienced instructor. For people experienced in the art, but still not fluent in remembering all the moves, this video can work as a quick memory jogger and help you remember when to do what. It isn't perfect, and if you happen to find something that is blatantly wrong, tell me and I'll change it (if it is actually wrong).

BUTOKUDEN Dojo Jodo Practice
At Butokuden, we can also play Jodo. This is the basic practice. We do this movement after Kata. Jōdō meaning "the way of the jō", or jōjutsu is a Japanese martial art using short staffs called jō. The art is similar to bōjutsu, and is strongly focused upon defense against the Japanese sword. The jō is a short staff, usually about 3 to 5 feet (0.9 to 1.5 m) long. However, the art was not used, as one might expect, by travelers to ward off aggressive bandits or swordsmen. The martial art of jōdō was the province of professional warriors. BUTOKUDEN Dojo Martial Arts Training Center is located in Irvine, California. We have classes in various Martial Arts, such as Kendo, Kyudo, Karate, Jodo, and Aikido. Please visit our web site at www.butokuden.com.
