In the deadliest Maoist attacks till date, Red rebels enticed a CRPF team into a trap early on Tuesday and butchered 76 of them in two separate ambushes deep in the jungles of Chattisgarhs Dantewada district.

The Dantewada massacre has stunned civil society and there is a sense amongst human rights groups that a dialogue could have had better results than the violent route the government has pursued against the Naxalites.

The hunt for Maoists has begun in the forests that stretch from East Singbhum in Jharkhand to Purulia in West Bengal.

India's government says Maoist rebels represent the country's greatest internal security threat. They have waged war against the government for more than 40 years. More than 6000 people have been killed, and many more maimed and injured. At least 50000 federal paramilitaries are fighting the insurgents. That figure sits alongside police and special government task forces, all at huge financial cost. In the last four years, almost $30 million in extra defence money has gone to states where Naxals have the heaviest presence. But this expensive strategy appears to be getting the government nowhere. A day after one of India's worst Naxal attacks, we debate if different political idologies can converge in order to put an end to the scourge of Naxalism.

At least 50 persons were killed in a major Naxal attack in Dantewada district of Chhattisgarh on Monday afternoon. The Naxals blew up a bus carrying passengers from Gadiras to Bhusaras in Dantewada district using Improvised Explosive Device (IED). The victims included some Special Police Officers.

Naxalites in West Bengal derailed a Mumbai bound train killing 65 passengers.

Sixty-five passengers of a Maharashtra-bound express train were killed early today.

In Jharkhand hundreds of villages in the forests of Palamu are cut off from the rest of the nation. That's because Naxals have imposed economic sanctions and the tribals struggle to survive with an extreme shortage of basic amenities. Our correspondent Shiv Pujan Jha has this exclusive report.

Hum Log: The Central government has given approval to deploy 70000 paramilitary personnel in the Naxal affected areas to combat the menace.

Twenty six CRPF jawans have been killed and seven injured in what is being seen as another major Naxal attack in Chhattisgarh.
