New Delhi, 14 December 2010: Government today assured Supreme Court of India of making ad hoc appointment of member to make the Green Tribunal functional. The bench observed that Government must take steps to make Green Tribunal functional in 7 days. New Delhi: In the wake of the 11th EU-India Summit, beginning on December 10, 2010 in Brussels, Belgium a group in India comprising civil society organisations, trade unions and people’s movements under the banner of “Forum Against FTAs” submitted a letter to the Prime Minister of India calling greater transparency in EU-India Free Trade Agreement (FTA) negotiations. The Indian government has signed, is set to sign or is negotiating close to 30 Free Trade Agreements (FTAs), including a few with developed countries like the European Union, the European Free Trade Association and Japan. The EU-India FTA, proposed to be signed by the end of this year, binds India into irreversible commitments in multiple areas like trade in agriculture, industrial goods and services, foreign investment regulations, intellectual property rights, and government purchases. The Mandleshwar town resounded with the voices of 20,000 to 25,000 people (over 50% of them women) affected by the Maheshwar dam who marched through the town today, in defence of their rights despite the heavy rain, asking for rehabilitation and land, or scrapping of the dam. After marching through the main roads of Mandleshwar town, the oustees reached the Narmada River and after affirming and renewing their resolve to struggle against all odds, the people congregated in a huge public meeting at the local “Krishi Upaj mandi” in Mandleshwar. The week-long national action against displacement and land acquisition organized by Sangharsh* started in the national capital today. The Dharna and demonstration by thousands of people who have gathered in front of the parliament started at 11 am with lighting of a ‘Mashal’ (traditional torch) amidst songs sung by Narmada Bachao Andolan and Krishak Mukti Sangram Samiti representatives. The main focus of the Sangharsh process is the participation of more than one thousand people from Assam, who are struggling against the dams in Assam and North East India and the forest communities from central India.
