Maurice Abravanel 2003 Legacy Award
Recognized as the founding father of most of the prominent performing arts organizations in Utah today. He came to Utah at age 44, having established himself as one of the great musical minds and conducting talents in the world. He left New York and a promising career on Broadway to come to Utah for a one-year contract to conduct the Utah Symphony and stayed for the remainder of his life. His orchestra was built using primarily local talent, cultivating Utahns as much as possible. He mentored young artists who have reached world renown status. Abravanel raised the public's awareness of the arts and built demand for them through performance tours that went to schools and communities.Pioneers of Progress: The Days of '47 recognizes modern-day pioneering accomplishments of men and women who have notably uplifted and benefited humanity, and the organization encourages and teaches pioneering principles.

Delibes' Valse Lente - Maurice Abravanel, The Vienna State Opera Orchestra
Tomorrow, 21 February, 2011, marks Léo Delibes' 175 birthday anniversary. If this French composer's name rings a bell, a pun on L'Air des clochettes from Act 2 of Lakmé, you would undoubtedly have heard of an arrangement or two of his popular Flower Duet (Sous le dôme épais) from Act 1 of the opera. On this Delibes birthday occasion, let us away from Lakmé's tragic and oppressive heat of British India. You are invited to see a live "doll" waltzing on the ebullient stage of Coppélia in the imperial city of Vienna. Prance along it you like.

Gottschalk - 'A Night In The Tropics' Symphony - Maurice Abravanel, Utah Symphony Orchestra.avi
Louis Moreau Gottschalk composed this symphony while in Guadeloupe, in 1859. Having two movements, it is not a typical symphony, but rather more an extended rhapsody on dance themes. New Orleans native Louis Moreau Gottschalk was born in 1829, and died of yellow fever in 1869, while in Brazil. First movement--'Andante'. Second movement--'Allegro moderato'. This includes lively Latin-American rhythms, some foreshadowing the modern samba. (Album notes by Sidney Finkelstein). From the 1973 album 'The World Of Louis Moreau Gottschalk'. Performed by Maurice Abravanel and the Utah Symphony Orchestra.

Sheer enjoyment, this bravura showpiece was reconstructed and orchestrated by Hershy Kay. Performed with verve and abandon by pianist Reid Nibley, with Maurice Abravanel and the Utah Symphony Orchestra. Louis Moreau Gottschalk was born in New Orleans in 1829. Early on, he showed musical talent, and studied with Berlioz. He drew from Creole and Negro melodies for his compositions. A pianist, he gave performances internationally. In 1869, while in Brazil, he contracted yellow fever, which was fatal. After his death, over two dozen compositions were discovered--including this 'Grande Tarantelle'. From the 1973 album 'The World Of Louis Moreau Gottschalk'.

10 Most Epic Symphony Finales, Volume 1
10 Most Epic Symphony Finales, Volume 1
Here are my picks for the ten most epic symphony finales. Yeah, I know there are many more awesome symphony endings out there but I have to well...listen to them first. Here is volume 1, because chances are I will make a second volume. Let me know what you think I should add in the second volume; I'm looking to expand my listening repertoire. For each symphony I have a picture for the following: the original album the track is on, the conductor in the recording, and an image of the composer. I claim no ownership of any of these photos. Oh...and that disclaimer at the beginning...I just don't want people to be immature jerks, which happens way too often on youtube. The order: 10. Johannes Brahms - Symphony No. 1; The Cleveland Orchestra with George Szell - 0:12 9. Dmitri Shostakovich - Symphony No. 12; Orchestra Sinfonica Di Milano Guiseppe Verdi with Oleg Caetani - 1:37 8. Bach-Webern, 1935: Ricercare, From "The Musical Offering," BWV 1079 - Maurice Abravanel
Bach-Webern, 1935: Ricercare, From "The Musical Offering," BWV 1079 - Maurice Abravanel
From the LP shown above, issued on the Vanguard label in 1962. Maurice Abravanel leads the Utah Symphony Orchestra.
