Though the purpose of sound holes is to help acoustic instruments project their sound more efficiently, the sound does not emanate solely (nor even mostly) from the location of the sound hole. The majority of sound emanates from the surface area of both sounding boards, with sound holes playing a part by allowing the sounding boards to vibrate more freely, and by allowing some of the vibrations which have been set in motion inside the instrument to travel outside the instrument.

Alternative sound hole designs

Tacoma Guitars has developed a unique "paisley" soundhole placed on the left side of the upper bout of their "Wing Series" guitars. This is a relatively low-stress area that requires less bracing to support the hole.

Holes not positioned on the top of an acoustic guitar are called soundports.They are usually supplementary to a main soundhole , and located on an instrument's side facing upward in playing position, allowing players to monitor their own sound.

''A Hole in the Head'' (1959) is a comedy film released by United Artists. It was directed by Frank Capra and featured Frank Sinatra, Edward G. Robinson, Eleanor Parker, Keenan Wynn, Carolyn Jones, Thelma Ritter, Dub Taylor and Joi Lansing. The film introduced the song "High Hopes", a Sinatra standard used as a John F. Kennedy campaign song during the presidential election the following year. Wynn plays a character based on Walt Disney who agrees to go into a partnership with Sinatra's character to build an amusement park in Florida (the film predates Disney World)—until he notices that Sinatra seems too desperate as he cheers for a dog upon which he'd bet heavily. The movie ends with Tony, Eloise and Alley singing "High Hopes" on the beach.

The screenplay was adapted by playwright Arnold Schulman, whose father was the operator of a Miami, Florida hotel. The protagonist of ''A Hole in the Head'' is a Miami hotel operator of The Garden of Eden. The actual hotel used for the exterior shots was the Cardozo Hotel, located on Miami Beach's Ocean Drive. Shot over 40 days between 10 November 1958 and 9 January 1959, the film did not enjoy the smoothest of productions, especially during the location filming at Miami Beach. Sinatra's relations with the press were problematic, the media seizing on every anti-Sinatra rumor they could find.

Aided by William Daniels, Capra completed the fim a full eighty days ahead of schedule, its final production cost of $1.89 million well under the allotted budget. The film opened on 17 June 1959. Although having some positive reviews, the film was only a modest box-office success, grossing $4 million in America.

Philip Xenidis, better known as Phil X (Born 10 March 1966) is a Greek-born guitarist and co-founder of the Los Angeles-based turbo pop band Powder. He also has a second band, the Drills. He is best known as the guitarist who replaced Rik Emmett in the Canadian rock band Triumph, for the ''Edge of Excess'' album and tour.

An early opportunity in Xenidis's career came when he was asked in 1990 to tour with Randy Coven, whom he met through Aldo Nova; in 1991, he toured the US with Aldo Nova.

Phil X is a prolific session guitarist, having played on albums by Tommy Lee, Methods of Mayhem, Avril Lavigne, Kelly Clarkson, Orianthi,Rob Zombie, Chris Daughtry, Alice Cooper, Thousand Foot Krutch and many others. He wrote the song "Tired" and also played guitar on Tommy Lee's ''Tommyland: The Ride'' album. He has appeared with Lee on Ellen and The Tonight Show with Jay Leno.He's one of the most viewed guitar players, especially amoung youngsters on youtube when presenting vintage guitars for Fretted Americana. He's also known for being very energetic on stage,where he usually throws his guitar in the air and catches it before it hits the ground while playing or even pushes it on his right and makes it spin clockwise, passing through his back and then grabs it back on his left. This can be also seen in the "Up Here" video clip with Powder whereby he adopts a different look with black nail polish and spiked hair .Phil X was featured in the "making of" video for the movie Josie and the Pussycats. He, along with his Powder bandmates, taught the young actresses to appear as if they were actually playing their instruments.

He played guitar for Triumph in his earlier years, replacing Rik Emmett for the ''Edge of Excess'' album and tour. The band folded shortly afterwards. He has performed with Aldo Nova and the band Frozen Ghost. Phil is also the inventor of the "Flip Stick," an innovative replacement for the "whammy bar" on Floyd-Rose-equipped guitars.

Phil X also performs in videos for Fretted Americana (a company that deals and sells vintage guitars and related equipment). In the videos he demonstrates an extensive range of vintage guitars playing some classic rock riffs. In the videos he generally uses two different guitar amplifiers; a 1960's Magnatone 'Tonemaster' and a 1960's Vox AC30, however he has recently started playing 15 and 30 watt clones of the Tonemaster, named the 'Evil Robot' Phil X Custom 214 built by John Kasha and sold exclusively through Fretted Americana. The original Evil Robot Combo 214 now been joined by an Evil Robot Head and Cabinet.

In April and May of 2011, Phil X substituted for Bon Jovi's lead guitarist Richie Sambora who could not be present and was on rehab. He played the last 13 American shows of Bon Jovi's 2011 World Tour.

Cosmic Gate is a German trance duo made up of Claus Terhoeven (born 1972, aka Nic Chagall) and Stefan Bossems (born 1967, aka DJ Bossi). Both from Krefeld in Germany. On October 28, 2009, DJ Magazine announced the results of their annual Top 100 DJ Poll, with Ultra Records artist Cosmic Gate placed #19, 43 spots above the group's ranking the year before. For the 2010 ''DJ Magazine'' Top 100 DJ Poll, Cosmic Gate moved to #24.

Cosmic Gate have made many remixes for artists such as DJ Tiësto (Urban Train), Ferry Corsten (Punk), Blank & Jones (DFF), Israel Kamakawiwo'ole (Somewhere Over The Rainbow), Svenson & Gielen (Answer the Question) and Vanessa-Mae (White Bird).

Over the past few years, Cosmic Gate's sound has developed and moved away from the harder edge trance through to their current, more subtle yet still driving energetic music style.

Emma Louise Hewitt (born 28 April in Geelong, Australia) is a singer-songwriter and trance vocalist who lives in Amsterdam.

Biography

After the success of her first single, she has worked with several trance artists such as Cosmic Gate, Gareth Emery, Dash Berlin and Ronski Speed. The single "Waiting", which she published with Dash Berlin in 2009, was ranked 25th in the Belgian singles charts. In Armin van Buurens popular radio show A State of Trance the single was elected by the audience with 2109 votes to the second best song of the year 2009. At the International Dance Music Awards 2010 "Waiting" was awarded as best ''HiNRG/Euro Track''. She was nominated twice in the category ''Best Trance Track'' with "Waiting" and "Not Enough Time".

Hewitt is also lead singer of the Australian rock band Missing Hours, with whom she released the eponymous debut album in October 2008. The band that she formed with her brother Anthony is currently no longer active, because both now live in Europe and are now working as songwriters of electronic dance music.
