As Einstürzende Neubauten returns from their two years self-imposed exile, group-face Blixa Bargeld tells Deele Fadele why they remain the best burst on the Richter Scale.
Einstürzende Neubauten’s tragic sounds send us reports from the other side.
Echoes from the abyss that speak for those who’ve forgotten how to; sounds of everyday hysteria for those who suddenly find all their dreams, hopes and aspirations dashed; the steady hum of rush hour traffic at standstill; of neighbours’ arguments heard through paper-thin walls; volcanoes erupting; earthquakes of the heart.
Blixa Bargeld personifies Neubauten’s articulate, accessible side. He’s sharp, sly, forthcoming and somewhat bored.
Up here in Some Bizarre’s London offices, he slugs another can, lights yet another cigarette and stares out the window. The anti-idol breaks the serious artist’s cardinal rule – never explain- by elaborating on the one song that encapsulate their present frame of mind.
“Zertoerte Zelle”, he translates “Destroyed Cell” plays with a double meaning of cell as biological cell and a prisoner’s cell. In loose associations, it wanders around those themes, then brings in Prometheus’ story. Prometheus stole the Fire of the Gods and brought it to mankind. For punishment Zeus chained him to some rock at the world’s roof and had an eagle eating his liver every day ‘cos it was always regenerating. Continue reading
