Youth Lagoon @ Milk Boy in Philadelphia – 11/16/2011 (words + photos)
This post of Youth Lagoon was lost for a little, but it has been found! It was supposed to go up the day after the show…
There are few times a year when you get to witness an artist or a band play songs off one of your favorite records of the year. Last week I got to see Youth Lagoon play songs off one of my favorite albums of the year– The Year Of Hibernation — at a sold-out show at Milk Boy down on Chestnut Street.
His record, with its memorizing vocals and soft melodies, has literally been on repeat ever since it was released in late September, which led me to have high hopes for last week’s show. Not surprisingly, my expectations were not disappointed.
Trevor and his buddy/guitar player, Logan Hyde played all the songs off The Year Of Hibernation in a jumble ordered. Even though, his record has only been out for a month, people were singing along word for word, most noticeably during “17″. The sound on his album translated extremely well live with a little extra punch. The pre-recorded drums were very upfront but not too overpowering. His soft vocals and subtle piano were still present throughout. The highlights of the night were when he jokingly called out the fan who was smoking pot a few rows back, “July” and the soft singalong whispers during “17″. It was a very comfortable atmosphere put forth by the two dudes from Boise, Idaho.
After the set, Trevor and Logan hung out with crowd, taking photos and signing autographs, before they were on they’re way north to Boston. Trevor was very genuine with his fans and made sure he spoke to everyone who wanted to chat. To sum it up in one sentence, it was a rad show put on by two cool dudes.
Philly F/M Festival kicks off next week
The Philly Film/Music Festival is coming up next week(Sept 22-Sept 25) and it’s playing host to some wonderful shows throughout the city. Some of the artists that will be playing are Sharon Van Etten, Marissa Nadler, Toy Soldiers, Nicos Gun, Creeping Weeds, Deadmau5, and many, many more.
You can either buy tickets to individual shows or buy a one-time badge that will get you into any show you’d like. That can be found HERE. BUT if you buy a badge through JUMP Magazine, you’ll get it for $30 cheaper. So I would highly recommend doing that.
St Vincent released “Strange Mercy” + playing Union Transfer in November
St Vincent @ the Sanctuary of the First Unitarian Church in 2010
The lovely St Vincent(aka Annie Clark) released her fantastic third record Strange Mercy on Tuesday via 4AD and received raved(and well deserved) reviews across the board for it. Ms. Clark showcases her angelic voice and her hauntingly beautiful music extremely well on the album. More so than on her previous two records. One thing that stays true throughout all her LPs is the way she completely dominates the guitar. No one out there can play like her. Check out a few of her new songs below.
She announced a tour quite a while ago that will see her play Union Transfer on Wednesday, November 2nd. Tickets for the show can be found HERE. (St Vincent’s last show in Philly sold out so it might be wise to grab tickets sooner than later.)

Woods played Johnny Brendas last Friday 08/12/2011(photos)
Brooklyn band Woods played at Johnny Brenda’s on Friday night where they brought along their lo-fi, folky and, at times, spacey jams. It was a pretty packed crowd, but there were weird vibes going on between the audience and the band members. The band didn’t really say much while the crowd didn’t really know when to applaud due to the songs blending into one another. Most of the tunes carried on well individually but a few of the band’s long, spaced out jams caused audience members to lose interest and carry on with whatever conversation, whether in-person or via text message, they had going.
Nicos Gun video for “Soldier”
Philly kids, Nicos Gun, have been all over the place as of late, playing The Roots Picnic, Camp Bisco, the XPoNential Festival, to name a few. They’re taking a little break from touring to record their debut LP, but found time to make a video for their song, “Soldier”. If you’re from the Philadelphia area, you’ll recognized the Fishtown/Kensington area in the film. Enjoy!
Sidenote: Check out the cover story about Nicos Gun I wrote/shot for JUMP Philly HERE.
RIP Ryan Dunn
Ryan Dunn and Bam Margera @ McGillin’s Olde Ale House during a promo tour for Jackass 3D last fall
Sad news. Ryan Dunn, well-known as a member of the Jackass crew, died early this morning in a car accident. He was only 34. I grew up watching his crazy antics on Jackass and had the chance to meet him last fall. He was a really nice and funny dude. RIP Ryan.
“”Jackass” star Ryan Dunn was killed early Monday morning when his Porsche flew over a guardrail in West Goshen, Pa., slammed into a tree and burst into flames, according to local police.
Dunn’s passenger — who police have not identified — was also killed.
Dunn, 34, was identified by his tattoos, according to a witness who was on the scene when the bodies were pulled from the wreckage.
The one-car accident happened on Route 322 around 2:30 a.m., according to Officer Geiger with West Goshen police. The Porsche shot through about 40 yards of trees before it hit the last one and exploded into flames, according to police. The police press release reads, “Preliminary investigation revealed that speed may have been a contributing factor to the accident.”"
POPPED! Music Festival announces 2011 lineup
Finally. Philadelphia has a legitimate, big time music festival to be proud of. Yes, The Roots Picnic brings in a notable lineup, but it lacks the festival atmosphere. Luckily for all of us, POPPED! Music Festival has stepped up to take over that role. The festival, which will take place at FDR Park on September 23rd-24th, will bring the likes of The Shins, Panda Bear, Girl Talk, Pretty Lights, Cults, The Pains Of Being Pure at Heart, and many more, to the city. Tickets for the festival are available now and can be found HERE. (They’re a reasonable price, too!). Check out the lineup below.
