The US has been showing signs of recovery for the first time in nearly three years. The jobless rate has dropped to 8.5 per cent, the lowest since February 2009. At least 200000 jobs were created last month, a figure that surpassed the expectations of economists who estimated an increase of around 150000. But with 13.1m unemployed people, the US economy needs more job growth over a longer period of time to recover significantly. The slight boost to the economy could be good news for President Barack Obama, who faces an election later this year. Al Jazeera' John Hendren reports from the White House in Washington.

(Ebru News/AP) A deepening Ergenekon probe causes a stir among the suspects and in other circles as well. Worries arose after a map of the Supreme Court complex was found on one of the suspects' computer. Meanwhile, another suspect Kemal Alemdaroglu who was a former university president was taken to hospital because of hyper tension. After the Police found a map of the Supreme Court complex during the operations executed in the headquarters of IP -Workers party- in Ankara, attention has shifted to security measures. The map shows the easiest ways to enter and leave the complex through certain markings. After this chilling new evidence was revealed, alerts were raised at the premises of the Supreme Court. With the news appearing in the Turkish media the situation is getting very grave. Osman Yildirim who is one of the attacked Supreme Court suspects disclosed a shocking claim in his testimony. He said he had been given one grenade by retired general Veli Kucuk who has been in custody for being the head of the Ergenekon gang. The grenades were used to attack the daily newspaper, "Cumhuriyet". Yildirim went on to say while he was given one grenade, Alparslan Arslan, a suspect in the attack of the Supreme Court case was given 2 grenade at a meeting in Atashehir district of Istanbul chaired by retired general Veli Kucuk. Cumhuriyet was bombed with 3 grenades having the same serial number group before the Supreme Court was attacked. Police confirmed through technical data that ...

President Obama announced today that funding for the military will be cut back, but at the same time the US has sent thousands of US troops to Israel. The two countries are doing a joint exercise called "Austere Challenge 12." The exercise is meant to develop defense systems and collaboration between American and Israeli forces. US officials have denied this is in retaliation to Iran's war games and allege this was planned way in advance. Jamal Abdi, policy director for the National Iranian American Council, gives us his take on this US troop deployment.

Islamabad has now blocked the alliance's vital supply lines into Afghanistan in response. The incident threatens to put more pressure on relations between Pakistan and the military alliance, already strained by continued US drone attacks. European Union governments have reached a preliminary agreement to ban imports of Iranian crude to the EU but have yet to decide when such an embargo would be put in place. The agreement, news of which sent crude oil prices higher, followed talks in the last days of December between EU envoys. Objections to the idea, notably from Greece, were dropped during the talks. A European ban on Iranian crude would be part of concerted Western action to put pressure on Tehran to abandon its nuclear program, which many governments worry aims at producing an atom bomb. Tehran insists its aims are peaceful only. Iran supplies a total of around 450000 barrels per day to EU member states, making the bloc collectively the second-largest market for Iranian oil after China. Accordingly, China will benefit from this European embargo.
