I cannot plan what I write or post here. I had this confirmed to me through my own endeavour’s. At the beginning of this year I thought it would be good to try and write some kind of monthly reflection of events and my experience of them. I think I managed one post.
I have never been one to plan ahead, to set my stall out and achieve targets. I never had a plan (probably incase it didn’t work out) so my plan to do a monthly reflection soon fell by the wayside. It is safe to say when it comes to order and discipline I become uncomfortable, fidgety and irritated.
Anyway how on earth could anyone managed to do a monthly reflection of a world that is becoming so unpredictable. Could you? I couldn’t. I will be the first to hold my hands up and say the world for many reasons both personal and political has been pretty overwhelming this year. The so-called Arab spring, the Japanese Tsunami, the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear disaster, the News International scandal, the murder of a personal friend, George Osborne exotic ladies and the marching powder, burning Britain (the tories are in again), finding out my old flatmate had drowned in the ocean off Indonesia, the arrogance of Liam Fox, occupy Wall Street, NATO attacking Lybia but somehow ignoring Syria (not that the author in anyway is condoning the actions of NATO and it’s murderous campaign in Lybia), the struggle for Greece, ratings agencies and shadowy bankers dictating how we live and a growing grassroots movement for change all over the world. I couldn’t coherently link all that up if I tried. It is not because I am not capable, moreover it is because it is to me overwhelming.
The world is a strange place, human beings are strange beings. We are a odd mixture of evil, compassion, innovation and destruction. Good and bad in the simplest of terms. We are capable of just about anything, that has been proven time and time again yet somehow we seem hell bent on destroying anything that is good in favour of all that is bad. The world is largely unpredictable and will continue to be so, which in essence is no bad thing.
The one thing which is predictable however is this. Capitalism does not work, it never really worked and it never really will work. People think when you talk of “getting rid of capitalism” that somehow all the lights will go out, the freezer will stop working and we will all starve. We will somehow return to some dark age, where only the most powerful will propser…er…excuse me but that is what we have now. So in essence such a view is a load of bollocks !!!
When people talk of doing away with capitalism all they are talking about is finding a better fairer system of exchange; one that ensures every person on this planet is treated fairly and equally. It doesn’t mean we have to play non-competitive sports and all wear the same clothes and sport the same friggin haircuts. It means we treat each other with dignity and respect, it means we produce goods and services for the common good rather than the enrichment of a tiny minority. It means we confront problems collectively, it means we look out for each other safe in the knowledge that in doing so we create the time and space to create a world of beauty rather than a world of hate, cynicism, fear and greed. Occupy Wall Street? Occupy every street, make them our own, make them safe for the kids to play in, make them safe for everyone. Naive? Think what you will, call me naive, tell I am wrong, but don’t come crying to me when there is no food in the cupboard.
Our Story is just beginning
