CHRIS SPEDDING - Guitar Graffiti

CHRIS SPEDDING Guitar Graffiti cd 1978
Video Life / Radio Times / Time Warp / Midnight Boys / Bored, Bored / Walking / Breakout / Frontal Lobotomy (live) / Hey, Miss Betty (live)* / More Lobotomy [Parts 1 & 2] (live) / Breakout (live) / Hey, Miss Betty*.
Produced by C. Spedding except* produced by C. Thomas.
C. Spedding: guitars, vocals + Davy Lutton, Mick Oliver, Penelope Nesbitt, Ray Cooper, Steve Curry, Tony Newman.
" One of Britain's top session guitarists of the '70s (even participating in records by the furry Wombles!), Chris Spedding has had a truly aberrant solo career. A veteran of numerous outfits starting in the '60s, Spedding made several LPs under his own name before joining Andy Fraser's post-Free band, Sharks, who made two hard-rocking LPs in 1973 and '74. (Spedding also played on one of Sharks vocalist Snips' subsequent solo outings.) After that band split, Spedding released a succession of LPs that combine exquisite rock guitar with lackluster vocals and songs so vapid as to be virtually nonexistent. (On a 1970 Japanese release, he dispensed with vocals entirely.) The highlight of Chris Spedding is a novelty item called "Guitar Jamboree" which features Spedding aping various guitar heroes in a show of chameleonlike virtuosity.
We pick up the story later in 1976, however, when Spedding teamed up with the then-unrecorded Vibrators for a great single, "Pogo Dancing," the first punk dance record. Hurt, Spedding's next LP, is a more solid follow-up, thanks to Chris Thomas' crisp production. The material is generally better, and there's one outstanding number, the ominous "Lone Rider."
"Guitar Graffiti" finds Spedding meandering again, producing a crass attempt to cash in on his new wave credibility (legitimately established through his seminal alliances with the Sex Pistols and the Cramps, for whom he produced demos, and the Vibrators).
The worthwhile track is "Hey, Miss Betty," the only one produced by Thomas; the song is a rocking homage to '50s bondage queen Betty Page..." Source

For this tour, SOUR JAZZ were joined by very special guest, DANIEL REY, on guitar. Apart from producing the last two SOUR JAZZ albums -- 'Rock & Roll Ligger' and 'American Seizure' [both on Acetate Records] -- Daniel has previously played with and produced bands such as The Ramones, Ronnie Spector, Iggy Pop, Keith Richards, Richard Hell, The Misfits, Nashville Pussy and countless others. Never before had so much cunning talent shared one stage. Downright historical, that's what it was. One for the history books, one for bleary-eyed fans to look back upon with equal parts fondness and disbelief. Now, SOUR JAZZ invites you to enjoy a stunning array of mega-hits from their heroically glorious back catalogue -- songs of love, songs of despair, songs of filth and of tenderness and longing. Recorded live at Sala de Apolo in Barcelona on 16 June 2010, this official live release should do the job of seriously upsetting your neighbours. SOUR JAZZ are currently in the studio, recording a new album with Daniel Rey handling the production.

The Liquid Gang: J. Lowry: lead vocals & bass guitar / J.C. Poligot: drums & percussions / J. Asherton: vocals & guitars.
Singer/songwriter Johan Asherton has found an audience in his native France and as far away as Japan with his special brand of alternative pop and folk-rock. Born in Paris in 1958 to a family of classically trained musicians, he took up the violin and piano as a boy, and sang in his school choir -- but he found inspiration in a different musical direction from the sounds of Jimi Hendrix, T. Rex, and Creedence Clearwater Revival during the late '60s and early '70s. He switched to the guitar, and was originally fixated on the electric instrument -- in addition to Hendrix and Marc Bolan, Rory Gallagher and American bluesman Johnny Winter were strong influences on him during this period. During the first half of the '80s, Asherton formed and led the Froggies, a French garage punk band that released a pair of albums, 'Hour of the Froggies' and 'Get Frogg'd', in 1984 and 1985, respectively. Asherton also passed through the lineup of the Liquid Gang, participating on one album, entitled 'Showdown!'.
During the second half of the 1980s, however, his interests took an unexpected turn toward acoustic music. He became immersed in the sounds of Leonard Cohen, Bob Dylan, and Nick Drake, at the same time moving toward a solo career that had him switching to acoustic guitar. Though he'd recorded his first single in 1981 (a project that first introduced him to producer Patrick Chevalot, who later worked with him on his album 'Under the Weather'), it wasn't until 1988 that he cut his first album, and by then he was thoroughly under the spell of American and British folk and folk-rock, idolizing such figures as Tim Buckley, Dave Van Ronk, and Townes Van Zandt, among many others. His first album, 'God's Clown', was a retro-sounding folk record that was a commercial and critical success, and has come to be cited in recent years as an immensely important record on the French music scene.
His 1995 album, 'The Moon, Soon', was a tribute to one of his most important idols, Nick Drake, and in more recent years he has plunged into an extended series of tributes, musical and literary, to Marc Bolan. Asherton has worked with such figures as Nikki Sudden, guitarist/singer Dominique Laboubée, Tim Buckley alumnus Jeff Eyrich, bassist/keyboardist John Greaves, and the late Canterbury prog rock/jazz-rock drummer Pip Pyle. He has collaborated with figures from the folk music world such as Charlotte Greig and Julian Hayman, but he has also worked in the field of electronic music. His other activities include painting, literature, and films. As an author, Asherton was also responsible for a biography (in French) of Marc Bolan, and he has several published collections of poetry to his credit. ~ Source

VA - John Fogerty: Wrote A Song For Everyone

VA John Fogerty: Wrote A Song For Everyone cd 1996
Jolly Jumpers: Fly Away / Girl Trouble: Commotion / DM3: Sweet Hitchhiker / The Psyclone Rangers: Effigy / Steve Hooker: Run Through the Jungle / Going Public: Don't Look Now / Peter Zaremba & Paul Johnson: Cross-Tie Walker / The Outsideinside: Up Around the Bend / Al Perry & The Cattle: Fortunate Son / The New Duncan Imperials: Hey Tonight / The Barefoot Brothers: Gloomy / Screaming Thunders: Back in the Hills / The Coal Porters: Who'll Stop the Rain / Steve Wynn: Graveyard Train / Uncle Joe's Big Ol' Driver: Hey Tonight.
All songs, naturally, written by J.C. Fogerty.
The music of John Fogerty may be quintessentially American -- rootsy, rocking, and unpretentious -- but it took a Finnish label (Rubber Rabbit) to put together this tribute album (which was released domestically by Pravda). Several American acts do make an appearance, however, and all of the artists take a fairly faithful approach to the material. Some versions are faster, some harder, but there's nothing that quite qualifies as punk or metal -- it's all still rock & roll. Al Perry & the Cattle take the biggest risk by combining the lyrics to "Fortunate Son" with music that sounds more like the Go-Go's' "We Got the Beat" -- not necessarily a bad move, but certainly the most unusual. Wisely, none of the bands attempt to sound exactly like Fogerty or Creedence Clearwater Revival. That's for the best, although the originals remain definitive. Highlights include Girl Trouble's harmonica-spiked "Commotion," DM3's rollicking "Sweet Hitchhiker," and Steve Wynn's intense "Graveyard Train" (recorded live at Washington, D.C.'s 9:30 club). With plenty of great Fogerty songs from which to choose, a sequel would not be unwelcome. That would give other musicians the opportunity to sink their teeth into the likes of "Down on the Corner," "Lookin' out My Back Door," and "Bad Moon Rising" (among countless others). Like those classic compositions, the song from which the compilation took its name, "Wrote a Song for Everyone," was not included. The liner notes were provided by Wynn, who credits Fogerty for turning him on to artists like Bo Diddley, Hank Williams, and Screamin' Jay Hawkins. ~ Source
