The President delivered his speech at Shaker Heights High School in Ohio on Jan. 4th, 2012, where he explained why he appointed Richard Cordray to be the nation's top consumer watchdog as Director of the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau. Time permitting, we may present the steps that homeowners facing foreclosures can take to renegotiate their mortgages; Dennis Kabatto's segment on the latest developments in Sierra Leone; or Eustace Greaves may update us on changes in tax laws.

There is a new bill in the NY state legislature called the solar jobs bill. However, they can name these bills whatever they want. A group of environmental activists heard a panel discussion of the bill that gave the impression that the bill is very limited and perhaps even designed to slow the growth of the solar industry by "Wall Street-ifying" it. We decided to have our own panel discussion on Thursday, January 19th, 7-9 PM at the Community Church at 35th Street between Park & Madison Ave.

Three of the four panelists will be on the show: Anthony Pereira of altPOWER, Inc., John Siciliani of JFS Renewables LLC, and Megan Matson, co-founder and Strategy & Policy Director for LEAN Energy US, a new organization out of California (the #1 solar state). John and Anthony are both past presidents of the New York Solar Energy Industry Association and long-time solar panel installers and have been on Eco-Logic before. They are great at linking policy and business issues and cutting through the jargon. We'll discuss the bill, how good it really is and how it could be made better. What is a "Solar Renewable Energy Credit"? What is "Feed In Tariff"? The final wording of the bill can still be changed; there is still time for voter input. Your input.

Lynn Samuels passed away on December 24th. Lynn was an overnight producer at WBAI, as well as a former Music Director, an engineer and she also did some other WBAI shows throughout her years at the station. She went on to work at WOR and WABC after WBAI. At both those stations, she tangled with right-wing hosts. Her last job was a show at Sirius XM Stars. She was 69. In addition, WBAI's longest listener and ever-present on air caller, Monroe Litman passed away the same day as Lynn Samuels, Christmas Eve. He will be missed. Litman was 80 years old. R.I.P. Monroe.

Kimberly Massengill, host of WBAI's Tuesday morning music show, Thump and Growl, has been named the New York coordinator for Occupy Wool Street, a Chicago-based campaign urging knitters, crafters, and designers to make hats, scarves, gloves and blankets to help the Occupy Wall Street protesters at Zuccotti Park better endure the cold weather. The effort not only provides a valuable service for the movement, but will also allow the participation of those who would like to join the protest, but are unable to be there physically. A new show on WBAI: OCCUPY WALL STREET RADIO. From the streets to airwaves, the movement that began as a Day Of Rage takes to the airwaves on the only station that broadcasts the voice of the 99%. The show offers a regular check in for the latest breaking news from the streets.
The initial Occupy Wall Street Radio aired on October 26, 2011. The show can be heard Monday through Friday from 6:30 to 7 PM. We also archive past shows. Hear the voices, the heart, the soul of this 99% growing and now global movement.

The first contributor is Marcin Rusinkiewicz, who is a volunteer/intern working remotely with Pacifica Affiliates Coordinator Ursula Ruedenberg and on site at WBAI with Interim Development Director Andrea Katz. Marcin (pronounced “Marchine”) is a former Austinite (as in Texas), academic and labor organizer. He has written on various topics and militated on behalf of various progressive causes.
