Janice M. Vidal, often credited mononymously as "Janice",^[1] is an award-winning female Cantopop, Hong Kong English pop, Jazz and R&B singer based in Hong Kong. She is the twin sister of singer Jill Vidal.

Debuted in 2005, Vidal performs in English, Cantonese and Mandarin.

Biography[link]

Vidal was born on April 13, 1982 in Kowloon, Hong Kong. She is of mixed parentage with a Filipino father with ancestry in Cebu, Philippines and a Chinese Korean mother from Seoul, South Korea. As a Hong Kong singer, Vidal adopted the Chinese name Wei Lan (衛蘭). She is often credited mononymously as Janice.^[1] In the past she also work as a bar singer^[2] by names such as "Renee" prior to her debut album in 2005 and "Ming Lok Tai" (明樂蒂) in an EEG singing competition in 2000^{[citation needed]}. As of 2009^[update], her father resides in Hong Kong, while her mother resides in South Korea.

Her singing is widely accepted by fans in Hong Kong, as of 21 November 2010, she is the only female singer occupied 2 spots in the top 10 of MOOV forever chart (the only other singer is Justin Lo), they are "離家出走" (Run Away from Home) currently number 1 and "愛才" (Love Talent) currently number 6.^[3] Her single "離家出走" (Run Away from Home) was recognised by the current Chief Executive of Hong Kong Sir Donald Tsang.^[4]

She admitted in a radio interview that she cannot read Chinese and uses English Romanization to help her pronounce words that she sings in the recording studio. In an interview with South China Morning Post in 2009, she states that she has converted to Buddhism about 6 years prior to that interview.^[5] She has since become Christian along with her sister Jill, following her sister's scandal in Japan.^[6]

Pre-debut[link]

Before becoming an artist herself, Vidal had always enjoyed singing. Her voice came to the attention of renowned producer Mark Lui by chance when she recorded the backing vocals for one of Leon Lai's songs "純粹誤會 (Drum & Bass Mix BPM 170)" in 2001. Lui informed Leon, who in turn decided to offer Vidal a contract with Amusic (東亞), a newly-formed record label where Leon Lai is a major investor and to which he himself transferred. As a result, Vidal became the first newcomer to sign for Amusic in 2004.

Music career[link]

In her first concert, Vidal stated that she was signed by Amusic around 2003. At the time Leon Lai thought that her Cantonese was not good enough, and initially asked her to work as an office assistant.^[7]

During the winter of 2004, Vidal started catching the media's attention by covering one of Lai's classic hits "Long Distance" (情深說話未曾講) in English. The cover song quickly became a hit. Some fans initially thought it was an overseas singer who was covering one of Lai's classic hits, but were surprised to find out the singer was an unknown Hong Kong rookie. Since it was Christmas, her first song was swiftly followed by a Christmas version of another Lai cover "Bu Ke Yi Shi" (不可一世), sung in Cantonese. The Cantonese cover of "Long Distance" (情深說話未曾講) was aired on radio in Spring 2005 for the first time.

By April 2005, Vidal had become known as a mysterious singer who sung several cover versions of Leon Lai's songs, but whose face has never been shown in public. After roughly six months of radio publicity and building public anticipation, her face was finally unveiled when her debut album "Day & Night" was released on April 13, 2005. Fellow Cantopop singer, Justin Lo, was one of the main producers for this album, and it soon became a hit. On 25 November 2005, Vidal released her second album "My Love".

Vidal won all the (female) newbies singers awards in 2005 that were awarded by Hong Kong media. They were Commercial Radio Hong Kong (CRHK) 2005 Best Female Newbies - Gold, RTHK 2005 Best Female Newbies - Gold, TVB 2005 Best Female Newbies - Gold and Metro Radio I-Tech Metro Best Newbies 2005 (unranked). In mid-December 2005, she was placed fifth for Commercial Radio 2's 2005 Favorite Female Singer Award. She obtain Bronze in the Best Female singer category for 2006.

Vidal held her first concert series in Hong Kong from 29 March to 1 April 2007, as part of her four-night stint at Hong Kong Coliseum. It was called "My First Concert."

Vidal's fourth studio album, titled Serving You, was released on 27 November 2008. On 21 December during the press conference for Lai's new album Is Me, Lai announced that Serving You had sold more than 150,000 units.^[8]

Vidal's fifth studio album, titled Morning, was released on 3 July 2009 and is her first English album composed of original compositions.

From 28 April 2007 to 13 May 2007 Madame Tussauds Hong Kong organised "Madame Tussauds - Your Celebrity Choice for this Summer" competition with an aim to select new wax portrayal to be displayed in Madame Tussauds museum^[9] Vidal won the competition in May and her wax portrayal started to display in the glamour section on 18 July 2007. The statue is dressed in a green ballet dress used during "My First Concert" which Vidal had donated.^[10]

Janice Vidal released her first Greatest Hits Selection + New Songs compilation disc on 27 November 2009, which comprises hit songs from her 5-year singing career - featuring 34 songs and 17 Music Videos.

In April 2010, Janice won the highest record sales award (female artist) at the 2009 Hong Kong IFPI Awards ceremony. In addition, her albums 《SERVING YOU》 and 《WISH》 were also awarded with the top 10 best selling Cantonese albums of 2009.

Janice released her new Cantonese album called Love Diaries, which was released before her second concert "Fairy Concert 2010" at the Hong Kong Coliseum on October 16 and 17. She also held her first MOOV live concert on July 11, 2010, where she performed five new songs from her new album as well as older classics with new arrangements. The song with JW, "What Men Believe" (男人信甚麼) has won her the best song of the year in TVB 2010 Jade Solid Gold Music Award.

There are many people in history who are commonly appended with the phrase "the Great", or who were called that or an equivalent phrase in their own language. Other languages have their own suffixes such as e Bozorg and e azam in Persian and Urdu respectively.

In Persia, the title "the Great" at first seems to be a colloquial version of the Old Persian title "Great King". This title was first used by the conqueror Cyrus II of Persia.^[1]

The Persian title was inherited by Alexander III of Macedon (336–323 BC) when he conquered the Persian Empire, and the epithet "Great" eventually became personally associated with him. The first reference (in a comedy by Plautus)^[2] assumes that everyone knew who "Alexander the Great" was; however, there is no earlier evidence that Alexander III of Macedon was called "the Great".

The early Seleucid kings, who succeeded Alexander in Persia, used "Great King" in local documents, but the title was most notably used for Antiochus the Great (223–187 BC).

Later rulers and commanders began to use the epithet "the Great" as a personal name, like the Roman general Pompey. Others received the surname retrospectively, like the Carthaginian Hanno and the Indian emperor Ashoka the Great. Once the surname gained currency, it was also used as an honorific surname for people without political careers, like the philosopher Albert the Great.

As there are no objective criteria for "greatness", the persistence of later generations in using the designation greatly varies. For example, Louis XIV of France was often referred to as "The Great" in his lifetime but is rarely called such nowadays, while Frederick II of Prussia is still called "The Great". A later Hohenzollern - Wilhelm I - was often called "The Great" in the time of his grandson Wilhelm II, but rarely later.

Richard 'Richie' Aprile, Sr., played by David Proval, is a fictional character on the HBO TV series The Sopranos.^[1] Richie was a capo and the older brother of former DiMeo crime family acting boss Jackie Aprile, Sr.

Richie was one of the most ruthless characters on the show; he was impulsively violent, callous, irascible, greedy, and narcissistic. He made his first appearance in season two, recently released from a ten year prison sentence, and soon began to cause trouble. Feeling disrespected by Beansie Gaeta, Richie ran him over with his car, leaving him wheelchair bound. There was continual tension between Richie and Tony Soprano, who was younger and had been subordinate to Richie before his prison term, but who was now boss of the family. He also rekindled an old relationship with Tony's sister Janice Soprano.

In his ten years away Richie had grown apart from his son "Little Ricky" Aprile, Jr and was embarrassed by his participation in ballroom dancing, considering it a sign of homosexuality. He plotted with Junior Soprano to overthrow Tony but when the move was not approved, Junior told Tony about Richie's plans. Tony planned have Richie 'clipped'. However, before the plan could be carried out, Richie got into a fight with Janice about his son's possible homosexuality, which resulted in her shooting him dead. Tony called in Christopher Moltisanti and Furio Giunta to dispose of his corpse, and everybody else was told that Richie had gone into the Witness Protection Program.

Plot details[link]

Richie Aprile, the older brother of acting DiMeo crime family boss Jackie Aprile, Sr., was a capo in the DiMeo crime family before being sent to prison for ten years. While Richie was in prison, Jackie died and before his release, Richie came back to a very different family with Tony Soprano as the boss. Richie had known Tony since before he became a made man; Tony himself recalled having to pay for dinners for Richie and others as a newly made man. Tony and Richie had gotten along in the old days; Richie intervened on Tony and Jackie's behalf when old-school mobster Feech La Manna wanted them killed for robbing his card game. There was no love lost between them upon Richie's return.

Impetuous and irascible, Richie still saw Tony as his younger brother's friend and subsequently had difficulty accepting orders from someone who was once subordinate to him. Due to Richie's belligerent narcissism, he automatically felt he was entitled to inherit everything he wanted for paying his dues in prison. Tony recognized that Richie's absence was due to his imprisonment and promised to work to give him his due, to which Richie immediately rebuffed that offer by saying that what is his is not Tony's to give.

Richie was arguably the most ruthless of all Mafiosi cast in the series. His tensions with Tony developed throughout Season 2. One of Richie's first actions as a free man was to confront his old partner Peter "Beansie" Gaeta and try to claim money from him. When Beansie failed to pay Richie at Richie's welcome back party, Richie tracked him down again and threatened to shoot him. Later, Richie waited for Beansie by his car, and when he went to get in, Richie rammed Beansie with his car, crushing Beansie between the two vehicles. Richie then puts the car in gear and drives over the paralyzed Beansie, then puts it in reverse and runs him over again. Richie was later forced by Tony to make amends by building Beansie a ramp for his wheelchair, after which Richie comments to Paulie and Silvio: "I'll build a ramp up to your ass, drive a Lionel up in there".

Richie loaned money to Tony's childhood friend Davey Scatino and eventually cut him off when Scatino started to miss payments. Scatino managed to get a seat at Tony's high stakes executive game and when Richie found him there he flew into a rage. Tony intervened because he could not lose face by allowing one of his players to be harmed and sent Richie away. Tony later punished Richie for his disruptive behavior at the executive game, for which Richie feigned apologies. After the game, Scatino was so heavily indebted to Tony and Richie that both men took over Scatino's sporting goods store, Ramsey Sports and Outdoor, in what became known as "the Scatino bust out".

Richie disliked Tony's protégé Christopher Moltisanti because of his violent relationship with Richie's niece, Adriana La Cerva, and warned Christopher of the consequences should he ever hit her again. Christoper's two young associates, Matthew Bevilaqua and Sean Gismonte, learned of Richie's dislike for their boss, and therefore they shot Christopher, hoping to impress Richie. The shooting went wrong and Christopher survived. Richie had nothing to do with planning the hit and when he learned of it, he refused to help Bevilaqua afterward and chased him off his premises.

Richie and Janice Soprano, Tony's sister, used to date in high school. When Richie left prison, he and Janice resumed their old relationship and eventually became engaged. Janice frequently encouraged Richie to defy Tony, because she wanted to be married to the boss. One night while having sex, which ended abruptly when Janice said "Oh baby, you're the boss... it should be you," Richie became upset and told Janice he needed to be loyal. Janice's response "Tell that to Paul Castellano," a reference to the real life slaying of the Gambino boss by John Gotti.

Richie acted as a mentor to his nephew, Jackie Aprile, Jr. for a short time before his death; he brought him along to meetings to discuss Mafia business.

In the end, Richie was preparing, with the approval of Tony's Uncle Junior, to take over the family as boss. Richie approached acting capo Albert "Ally Boy" Barese to ask for his support in his takeover bid but he declined. After weighing his options, Junior realized he was better off with Tony in charge and tipped him off about Richie's plans. Silvio Dante advised Tony that there was nothing to gain from leaving Richie alive, so Tony instructed Silvio to have Richie killed. However, this would prove unnecessary.

After returning home one night, Richie and Janice got into an argument over Richie's son's possible homosexuality. Richie was enraged by the thought but Janice dismissed the idea and said it wouldn't matter if he was. Furious, Richie punched her in the face before settling down for dinner. A shocked Janice left the room but quickly returned with a gun and shot Richie twice, killing him. Distraught, she called Tony, who had Chris and Furio Giunta dismember Richie's corpse with the meat-cutting equipment at [Satriale's Pork Store]], and sent Janice off to Seattle to lie low. Only the four of them know what really happened to Richie. Carmela knows of Richie's death but did not press Tony for the specifics. In "Funhouse", Tony joked to Silvio and Pussy that Richie was "in the Bermuda Triangle". Everyone else has been told that he became an FBI informant and entered witness protection. Conversations with Silvio (in "All Happy Families...") and Paulie (in "Made in America") indicate that they also know of Richie's true fate. Later, when she had been compromised, the FBI heavily implied to Richie's niece Adriana that her uncle had not entered witness protection, regardless of what she had been led to believe.

In the season 5 episode "The Test Dream", Richie briefly appears in Tony's dream riding in the backseat of a car driven by Artie Bucco. Sitting next to Richie is also the deceased, former Aprile Crew capo Gigi Cestone.

James Bostick (born June 30, 1978), better known by his stage name Jus Allah is a New Jersey rapper who made his official debut on Jedi Mind Tricks second album Violent by Design in 2000. He is known for his aggressive lyrics that are commonly Afro-centric. He heavily uses the rhyming technique known as multi-syllable rhyming, which is abundant in "Violent By Design" and "A History of Violence".

Early days[link]

Jus first joined Jedi Mind Tricks shortly after the group's formation, at the time he was 15 years old and appeared on their first demo tape,The Psycho-Social CD released on superegular records. In the late 90's JMT recorded the album Violent By Design, considered by fans and critics alike to be some of Jedi Mind Tricks' finest work. The album was widely praised and contributed to Jus popularity, as he appeared on nearly all the songs along with Vinnie Paz.

Leaving Jedi Mind Tricks[link]

A short while after the release of Violent by Design, Jus left amid uncertainty over JMT's new association with Babygrande Records. He then went on to start his solo career at rapper Virtuoso’s label, Omnipotent Records. In 2005 he left Omnipotent Records, joined Babygrande, and dropped his first solo album, All Fates Have Changed. Jus later stated in interviews that he had never given his OK for the album to be released, and wasn't satisfied with some of the album's production. In early 2006 an album called Necronomicon was released featuring both Jus and Boston rapper Bomshot as hip-hop duo The Devilz Rejects. Jus stated that he had absolutely nothing to do with the album, and that he was not being paid for it. The new verses on the album were most likely old, unreleased recordings from his prior label Omnipotent Records, where Bomshot was also an artist. Jus is currently working on his second album entitled "Meanest Man Alive", which is going to be produced by producer C-Lance, in its entirety. The album is currenty without a release date. In 2007 Jus reunited with his former group Jedi Mind Tricks and released their first collaborative track in 5 years, titled "The Rebuilding".

Reunion with Jedi Mind Tricks, future solo album[link]

In an interview conducted in September 2007 on the Art of Rhyme website, Jus Allah announced that he has rejoined Jedi Mind Tricks.[1] In the interview he states: "I'm back in the group [and] I'm focused on... putting out the next Jedi Mind Tricks album... 'A History of Violence'." In addition, he says that he has rejoined Babygrande and that the entire "All Fates Have Changed" fiasco has been put in the past, and was in large part a misunderstanding [2]. JMT's new label, Enemy Soil, will be releasing Jus Allah's second solo album, Meanest Man Alive. This was confirmed in an interview with Vinnie Paz[3]. The album will be produced by Enemy Soil producer C-Lance.
