A Few More Tea Leaves

We're seeing a possible trend out of Iowa. Santorum's taking the west and Romney is doing better in the east. But since a greater portion of the vote is currently counted in the east, Santorum seems to have room to grow. So possible good sign to him. Too early to say with any certainty. We'll update you again after the next round of votes.

Long Night Blogging

Okay, as you can see in our live results we've got a very, very close race. At the moment, with 31% of the vote counted Mitt Romney is 4/10% ahead of Rick Santorum. And those three have traded the lead a few times tonight.

We're going to be looking closely at the county by county results and see what more light we can shed on this very murky picture.

What counties are you watching? And what do you make of the results so far?

We'll be reporting tea leaves from the county by county totals here at TPMLiveWire.

Okay, That's a Fail

So you remember how I told you there's an early and a late arriver wave in the entrance polls. Well, on CNN just now, Wolf Blitzer just announced they found a third wave. Awesome. Way to be on top of things. Anyway, the latest entrance numbers have Santorum moving up. Paul 24%, Romney 23%, Santorum 23%.

More Tea Leaves

Okay we've got the second round of 'entrance poll' results now. They're slightly different from the first round. The combination of early and late arrivers has Paul 24%, Romney 23%, Santorum 19%.

So those do seem to show Santorum isn't making it. But again, these are far from an exact science. They're not even as reliable as exit polls, which is a pretty low bar.

See our county by county results right here.

Reading the Tea Leaves

We're reading the (fairly unreliable) entrance poll tea leaves. Listening to the conversation on CNN, they just noted that 37% of the caucus-goers made their decision in the last "few days." 12% made up their mind today. Taking the total of 37%, that's 7% more than in 2008 when Mike Huckabee came out of nowhere and won.

In a climate of Santorumentum, that's got to be good news for Rick Santorum.

The real tell is going to be how much support gets mopped up by Bachmann, Perry, et al.

Late Update: The entrance poll for the early arrivals report like this: Paul 24, Romney, 24, Santorum 18, Gingrich 13. Again, these entrance polls have an imperfect record. And this is the first wave. There's another report for the late arrivers. That's still to come. A little disappointing for Santorum. But my recollection is that in 2008 Romney won the early arrivers too. And then of course he lost.

8:25 PM: Karl Rove's take on which counties to watch tonight. See our county by country live results here.

Ron Paul Supporters Unfazed By Idol's Third Place Finish

ANKENY, IOWA -- Prepare yourself for a shock: Ron Paul supporters gathered at his caucus results party just outside Des Moines here Tuesday were unfazed by this third-place finish here. Most of them that I talked to here tonight don't care how the Republican nomination fight ends for Paul, actually. They'll either vote for him as a third party candidate or, if he doesn't give them the chance, they'll write him in.

Romney Wins Iowa By A Mere Eight Votes

UPDATE at 2:37am Eastern: The Iowa State Party GOP has declared a final tally, and says Mitt Romney won by a mere eight votes. The first-in-the-nation Iowa caucuses closed with confusion and tension, as Mitt Romney and Rick Santorum finished in an effective dead heat. Both candidates each held just under 25 percent of the total count, and were only separated by a handful of votes. Right at the start of Mitt Romney's address to his supporters at the night's end, the former Massachusetts governor...

The Iowa Caucuses: How Did Romney '12 Stack Up To Romney '08?

So how did Mitt Romney's performance in Iowa compare to the last time he ran for president, in the 2008 cycle -- with the difference that this time, he has been the big national frontrunner? In the 2008 caucuses, in which Romney made a major effort to become the conservative opposition to John McCain, he ended up getting 30,021 raw votes, 25% of the total vote, for a second-place finish -- a humiliating finish behind Mike Huckabee's 40,954 votes, 35% of the total. Indeed, that bad result threw Romney...

Rick Perry May Drop Out After Iowa Defeat

Rick Perry says that he may drop out of the presidential race following a devastating fifth place finish in Iowa. In an emotional speech to supporters on Tuesday night, Perry said that "with a little prayer and reflection, I am going to decide the best path forward." With 97% of precincts counting, Perry had only 10% of the vote, well behind the top tier of Rick Santorum, Mitt Romney, and Ron Paul, who all cracked 20%. His results were made all the more difficult by the huge dollars his campaign and...

Chromegate? Google Will Penalize Itself For Sponsored Posts

Call it "Chromegate." Just a few weeks after Google Chrome was reported to have overtaken Mozilla Firefox to become the second most popular Web browser in the world, Google's glory has been tarnished by a "jaw-dropping," massive online Chrome advertising campaign that would seem to violate Google's own guidelines, uncovered by SEO Book blogger Aaron Wall. Essentially, Google was caught paying at least one PR company to spam the Web with hundreds of crudely written "sponsored posts" from bloggersSearch...

Santorum Closes Out By Giving Iowa Some Of That Old Time Religion

URBANDALE, IOWA -- Standing a few steps behind Rick Santorum as he arrived at the Des Moines Christian school here Tuesday was none other than Ralph Reed. He told me he wasn't endorsing anyone, but said "we've known Rick a long time" and was hanging out today at Santorum's request. Reed said he was "pleasantly" surprised that Iowans are coming around to Santorum, who he said has been out there saying the right things to Iowa's electorate for a long time. Iowa, classic Iowa, really is a natural fit for...

Maryland Rep Disciplines Chief Of Staff For Letting Underage Intern Drink At Party

Rep. Andy Harris (R-MD) disciplined his chief of staff Kevin Reigrut for letting an underaged intern drink at her going away party, the Baltimore Sun reports. A spokesman for Harris told the newspaper that aides did not realize that the intern was under 21 when they let her drink at a party held at the representative's office. "When [Harris] found out about the incident ... he made it very clear that no alcohol was to be consumed in any of his offices, period," spokesman Ryan Nawrocki told the...

Jon Huntsman Thinks Americans Are Getting Screwed, But Is Anybody Listening?

Former Ambassador to China and Utah Gov. Jon Huntsman tells voters in a new ad that he thinks Americans are getting screwed. There's both a real fiscal deficit, along with a trust deficit in institutions of government. I'm here to fix it, he says. The problem? The Huntsman campaign doesn't have enough money to run it in New Hampshire, so they're running a drive through their website asking for donations to get it on the air. Such is life for the candidate who's eschewed Iowa in favor of putting it on...

It's All About The Ground Game Now

No one knows who will emerge a winner in the Iowa caucuses tonight because Iowa voters still don't know who they are going to vote for. The GOP primary has been highly fluid, with candidates rising quickly then crashing and burning, leaving room for another candidate to emerge. A day before the caucuses, Public Policy Polling showed the three front-runners just 2 points apart, and the Des Moines Register poll showed 41% of caucus-goers will make up their minds at the last second. In an election this...

Twitter's Murdoch Error Sparks 'Verified Accounts' Scrutiny

Just hours after he joined Twitter on New Year's Eve 2012, arch-conservative Australian media mogul Rupert Murdoch found himself embroiled in a typically flighty Twitter controversy over a tweet he sent and quickly deleted, disparaging the British for taking "too many holidays." But now, that's been overshadowed by a controversy with much wider, more serious implications involving his wife Wendi Deng's Twitter account -- or rather, a "Verified Account" attributed to his wife that was on Tuesday revealed ...

'Just The Beginning': Flood of 'Super PAC' Money Into Iowa Offers 2012 Preview

The ads are everywhere in Iowa: on cable, on network television -- during shows like "Dr. Phil," "Wheel of Fortune" and "The Tonight Show" -- and across the dial on talk radio (where it's gotten to the point that callers on talk radio shows are complaining about the onslaught). They walk, talk and act like campaign ads, but for the most part, they're not coming from candidates. Welcome to the presidential campaign, post-Citizens United.

    Newt Gets Swift-Boated

Newt Gingrich has made a new enemy. Last week, in response to the barrage of negative ads from a pro-Romney super PAC against him, Newt Gingrich said, "I've been Romney-boated." The comment was a reference to the ads by the group Swift Boat Veterans for Truth which falsely claimed Kerry had lied about his war record in Vietnam and contributed to George W. Bush's reelection. As Newt tries to fight back against the negative ads in Iowa, his comparison implies that, well, the Swift Boat ads weren't true.

Obama Misses Key Window For Empowering Top Consumer Watchdog

Today was the day that legal experts and many aides in both parties thought President Obama would provide a recess appointment to Richard Cordray, his nominee to administer the new Consumer Financial Protection Bureau. The rationale is quite technical, but here's the bottom line: one reading of the Constitution and of executive branch administrative law suggest that today is Obama's last day to recess appoint any of his languishing nominees, at least until the next time the Senate leaves town several...

How Occupy Des Moines Will Try To Win The Caucus

DES MOINES, IOWA -- The focus today will be on conservatives -- who's got them, who's lost them, who never had them -- here and across Iowa as caucuses begin. But let's pause for a moment and talk about the Occupy movement, which has a presence in Des Moines and plans to use the caucuses for its own ends. But you will likely see occupiers using the caucus process (and the massive media coverage surrounding it) to further their...

Newt: Romney's A Liar, But He's Still Better Than Obama

Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich clearly shocked his CBS interviewers this morning. The network's White House correspondent, Norah O'Donnell, and her colleague Bob Schieffer asked about Newt's recent suggestions that Mitt Romney is being duplicitous in claiming he has nothing to do with the Super PAC ads bombarding Newt in Iowa. Does that in effect mean Newt is accusing Romney of being a liar, O'Donnell wanted to know. Gingrich's response was blunt: "Yes," he said.

Caucus Time: How The Voting In Iowa Goes Down

With Iowa Republicans set to vote tonight in the state Republican caucuses, thus kicking off the national GOP's presidential nominating process, some readers might be wondering: How exactly do the caucuses work? Normally, polling places close at the same time, and then take different amounts of time to conduct their counts. In this case, caucus meetings all ...

Heading Out Of The Hawkeye: Here's What Happens After Iowa

It's finally here! After months of debates, polls, town halls, bubbles, collapses, and plenty of idle speculation along the way, voters in Iowa will finally pick their favorite Republican candidate today. Who will win? Nobody's sure -- the polling data is way too close to call with Romney looking strong, Ron Paul holding steady, and Rick Santorum coming up fast from behind. And there's still plenty of room for some of the dark horse candidates like Rick Perry or Newt Gingrich to sneak into the top tier...
