Wednesday morning extra-sarcastic briefs

Countdown to MSM covering this discrimination in 3, 2, 1: An Israeli soldier was denied entry to a Tel Aviv club because he was wearing a kippa and refused to take it off. So, you think there will be worldwide coverage by the media of this discriminatory practice?

Ew, Jew cooties! Algerians are rounding up the evil made-in-Israel clothing that they’re finding mixed in with the presumably non-kosher clothing. But worry not, the Algerian inspectors are on the case:

A source told the newspaper “we cannot rule out the possibility that an international ring smuggled the Israeli clothes into the country and that its operatives are being assisted by Algerian vendors based in several districts.”

Gasp! No! An international Israeli clothes smuggling ring! It’s the end of civilization as we know it! Damn those horrible Israelis, wanting to clothe people for profit! Damn them all!

Nu? Two Jews won the World Talking Championship? Two Israeli men won the World Universities Debating Championship. Really, talkative Jews? I had no idea that my people talked so much. None whatsoever. Not at all. Jews? Talky? Oh, come on. Shirley you jest.

Our drone’s better than your drone: If Israel’s drone is so sucky, then howcome Turkey didn’t shoot it down, even though they said they almost shot it down (and I almost one $200 million in the lottery the other week, too). Really? They called up two F-16 jets and couldn’t find it and shoot it down? Ya think maybe they’re–I don’t know–lying? Yeah, me too. Their drone is so much better than Israel’s that it manages to identify fuel smugglers as terrorists and murder dozens of them. But don’t worry, they’re going to pay compensation to the families.

Don’t worry, CAIR (and the NY justice system) is still going to call these hate crimes: The guy who threw molotov cocktails at various Hindu and Islamic buildings in New York is a nutjob who swore he’d get even because the proprietor of the store stopped him from stealing, and the other places wouldn’t let him use their bathrooms. Yeah, that sounds like a Muslim-hating freak to me.

Two! Two! Two nutjobs for the price of one: So that scumbag that was lighting cars on fire in Los Angeles? He did it because his scumbag mother was about to be deported back to Germany for being a thief. He hates America, you see, for having the nerve not to want to keep a thief, who has 19 fraud counts against her in Germany, from becoming an American citizen. Well, now he’s going to spend many years as an American resident in jail before being kicked back to Germany. Like mother, like son.

Oh, there was a primary or something yesterday? Wake me when it’s over. Especially since I have no influence over any but the Virginia primaries.

Wednesday “I saw a Bald Eagle!” briefs

Yes, I really did. Driving home from 95, right around Ashland, I saw a huge bird flying over the highway. As it neared, I saw the distinctive white head. That thing was HUGE. (The eagle, not its head.)

You and what navy? The Iranians took the opportunity of the Fifth Fleet’s leaving the Persian Gulf to say that they chased us out. Uh-huh. Sure. We’re sooooo scared. So scared that the Pentagon said, in effect, tough sh*t. We’re staying.

No, please! Don’t leave me! Bashar al-Assad is going to meet with Hamas and try to convince them to stay in Syria. Shyeah, right. When they’re kissing up to Erdogan and dissing Israel in unison with the Islamists of Turkey? Iran’s not going to be able to bankroll them much longer. Alternatives must be found. So it’s a good news/bad news thing. I’m starting to believe the fall of Syria is going to happen this year, and that when Syria falls, Hezbollah loses much of its influence and power. The flip side, of course, is Turkey and Egypt and the Islamist Spring.

Awwww. The Iranian currency is falling: And of course, Iran says its wholly unrelated to sanctions. Sure. The fact that now, anyone doing business with Iran’s central bank can’t do any business with the U.S.? Nothing to do with it.

Iowa Caucus Update

This article is cross-posted on the We Are For Israel blog.

There are many of you around the country wondering, “Why Iowa?” One of the main reasons is that in Iowa people can actually meet the candidates and interact with them on issues. Candidates come to speak to relatively small gatherings and share their views on topics on topics much more specific than they would do in a larger context. Iowans take the responsibility of vetting the candidates very seriously. Whether or not the caucus results follow the eventual nomination, the caucus winner has won the nomination about half of the time, the process helps those around the nation get to know the candidates much better.

This year, with only a Republican caucus, not everyone is involved in the Jewish community. That said, I am sure that many would be surprised by the number of Reform and Conservative Jews who are. One need not pledge to vote Republican to participate in the caucus and many moderate Democrats will change their affiliation for one day so as to participate in the Republican caucus, so there are a few Democrats who will be attending and participating in the caucus.

Overall, the winner of the caucus doesn’t mean as much as being in the top three or four. Constituent groups make themselves known in Iowa and support their group’s candidate. The religious right in Iowa has been debating among Santorum, Bachman, Perry and Gingrich. Santorum seems to be the clear favorite of that group. Ron Paul has his own following of Libertarian, isolationist, and small government supporters. Gingrich is a favorite of Reaganites and Orthodox Jews. Romney seems to be the favorite among the Republican Conservative and Reform Jews, mostly because of his more moderate social views.

On Israel, all but Paul, support a strong US-Israel relationship though each has a slightly different view of it. Support for Israel will not be a problem from this group. In fact, many of the candidates seem to almost be tripping over their feet to offer public support for Israel.

At this point, it seems fairly clear that the winners of the caucus will be in no particular order:

Romney, Santorum, and Paul with Gingrich likely pulling up in fourth place. Paul would lose to most other Republican candidates by a wide margin. Iowa’s caucus system gives him and his following a voice. Santorum will mostly likely be the Mike Huckabee of 2012, the overwhelming favorite of one third of those committed to the caucus process, the socially conservative right. Romney and Gingrich have been competing for support from those whose primary concern is economic with Romney getting about two-thirds of that support at this point.

Democrats are active here as well during the caucus process. As accusations fly against the administration, Democrat activists constantly have to offer their side of issues being presented. Pundits are everywhere as are television cameras.

So here we are with the Iowa Republican Caucus tomorrow. Friday night, we hosted Shmuel Rosner, who is in town for the Caucus and spoke about the Arab Spring at my congregation. Yesterday, I was among about forty Jews, hosted by the Chabad rabbi and a Conservative Jewish supporter of Gingrich, who met with Newt for a little over a half an hour. Tonight, I will hear from Mitt Romney at a larger gathering, hosted by another Conservative Jew at his local business. Tomorrow, I will meet in a small gathering with Debbie Wasserman-Schultz, Chair of the DNC.

Is this political heaven? No…well, Yes! It’s Iowa at caucus time!

Monday New Year briefs

Give us everything we want or we won’t negotiate with you: Saab Erekat repeats the Palestinian preconditions for peace talks (thanks, Obama!), which are for Israel to accede to all Palestinian demands, and then they’ll sit down at the negotiating table, presumably to demand everything else (e.g., the “right of return”).

“Netanyahu needs to freeze the construction of settlements and accept the ’67 outline for a two-state solution before we return to the negotiations table,” he asserted.

In other words, we’ll take Jerusalem first and talk later. Right. That’s gonna happen.

Inappropriate JHolocaust comparison alert: Sure, bringing sexual harassment charges against a man who spit on a woman and called her a slut is just like Nazi Germany’s Nuremberg laws.

Moshe compared the Israeli society’s treatment of the haredim to “persecution similar to the Nuerenberg Laws.” According to him, the very fact that a haredi man who verbally assaulted a female soldier is being accused of sexual harassment – even though many legal experts claimed there were no grounds for arrest – resembles racist legislation.

Sure. Israel is now going to create laws forbidding Haredi to have marry non-Haredia and strip them of their citizenship. Yes, what’s going on now–demanding that the Haredi nutjobs stop treating women disgustingly–is just like what happened in Nazi Germany.

I am beginning to understand the insanity of the Neturei Karta a little more now. Apparently, they’re not the only extremely religious nutjobs.

There was another election at the UN? Did you know that SecGen Ban Ki-Moon starts his second term today? Yeah, me neither. And what is he going to concentrate on?

As he embarks on a new five-year term starting New Year’s Day, Ban said one of his top priorities is to help Arab countries sustain their moves toward democracy. He also said he intended to do more for young people and women, and address frustrations over the growing gap between the rich and poor expressed by the Occupy movement.

What democracy? It’s going to be one man, one vote, one time in Egypt, soon enough. Libya? Islamists. Tunisia? Well, maybe there, but what is the UN going to do to promote democracy over Islamism? Nothing, because it is filled with Islamists and politically correct bureaucrats who will cry “Islamophobia!” at the drop of a hat.

Finally, a feel-good story: Utah passers-by rescued two drowning children and saved their lives. And one of them used a handgun to do it. (He shot out the rear passenger window to get in and reach the children.) Here’s the original story with all the details.

The Muslim Brotherhood: Not so moderate after all

Gee, the Muslim Brotherhood says they’ll never recognize Israel and that they want to put the peace treaty with Israel up for a referendum, obviously to get a popular vote to pull out of it. Gee, that sounds familiar. A lot like, say, their offshoot, Hamas, which just uttered those very sentiments about Israel at the anniversary of their founding.

Egypt’s Muslim Brotherhood will not recognize Israel under any circumstances and might put the peace treaty with the Jewish state up to a referendum, the movement’s second in command told the Al-Hayat newspaper in an interview that was published Sunday.

Who knew? Not the famous New York Times columnist who had a dinner with one of their spokesliars and declared them moderate.

You know who knew? Barry Rubin. And readers of this blog.

Recognizing signed treaties that bind a nation in the international scene? Feh! That’s for other people, not the Ikwan.

“We will take the proper legal steps in dealing with the peace deal,” he added. “To me, it isn’t binding at all. The people will express their opinion on the matter.”

Of course it isn’t binding. It was made with infidels, and worse yet, with Jews.

Muslim Brotherhood spokesmen, as well as Palestinian guest speakers, made explicit calls for Jihad and for liberating the whole of Palestine. Time and again, a Koran quote vowing that “one day we shall kill all the Jews” was uttered at the site. Meanwhile, businessmen in the crowd were urged to invest funds in Jerusalem in order to prevent the acquisition of land and homes by Jews.

Throughout the event, Muslim Brotherhood activists chanted: “Tel Aviv, Tel Aviv, judgment day has come.”

The Islamists are allowing safe haven in Egypt for terrorists to launch attacks on Israel. And slowly but surely tightening their grip in Egypt. The secularists have been beaten down to the point where even they admit their nation has been hijacked by the Islamists and the military.

One of the lone voices in the wilderness is Barry Rubin. If you’re not reading his column regularly, you are not informed about the Middle East. The Islamists are winning, and he’s been telling us that for years.

And Iran just produced a nuclear fuel rod. Joy.

Time for another kick at Karl Vick

Remember back in November, when Time’s Israel expert, Karl Vick, wrote these words? Pay attention to the words in boldface.

But what if Abbas is holding still, and Hamas is moving closer to Abbas? That’s what’s been happening, from nearly all appearances, for the last two or three years, and everything coming out of the Cairo meeting points in the same direction. The head of Hamas, Khaled Meshaal, and Abbas spoke for two hours, Abbas in the big chair, Meshaal on the couch with two others. Afterwards both met the cameras smiling. “There are no differences between us now,” Abbas said. Mashaal went with: “We have opened a new page of partnership.” And on whose terms? Hamas stands for resistance, its formal name being the Islamic Resistance Movement. But in the Gaza Strip where it governs, Hamas has largely enforced a truce with Israel since January 2009. And in Cairo it signed a paper committing itself to “popular resistance” against the Israeli occupation of Palestinian territories. That’s “popular” in contrast to “violent” or “military” resistance. We’re talking marches here. Chanting and signs, not booby traps or suicide bombs.

Hamas is now denying utterly that there was even a chance that they would stop trying to destroy Israel. In fact, they’re laughing at the thought.

Hamas on Thursday dismissed claims that its Damascus- based leader, Khaled Mashaal, had ordered the movement’s armed wing, Izzadin Kassam, to stop armed attacks against Israel.

The statement came in response to a report in Haaretz that Mashaal had instructed his men to cease attacks on Israeli targets.

The report claimed that Mashaal issued the order “based on understandings” he had reached with Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas during their recent talks in Cairo.

Hamas spokesman Fawzi Barhoum described the report as “trivial,” saying it did not even merit a response.

And that’s not all. It’s pretty funny, actually, when terrorists quite plainly state that they’re not changing, they never changed, and they never will change, right on the heels of a major media piece insisting that that, indeed, is what is happening. Or at least, it would be funny, if only lives weren’t at stake here. The media promotes the narrative that terrorists don’t really want to destroy Israel, even while those same terrorists state their intent quite clearly.

Barhoum said that Palestinians had a “legitimate right” to engage in armed resistance against Israel in order to “defend themselves and their lands.”

According to Barhoum, claims that Hamas had abandoned the armed struggle “reflect the state of despair that the Israeli government is facing as a result of the firmness of the Palestinian resistance.”

Hamas’s Interior Minister Fathi Hammad told a visiting Tunisian delegation of supporters that the Palestinians would “pursue the path of resistance against Israeli occupation.”

There is also the reporting of the Hamas anniversary celebration, which Karl Vick didn’t seem to find interesting enough to mention. It must have had something to do with all those “Death to Israel” moments. In fact, Time seems only to portray one side of the issue as not caring about peace, and it isn’t Hamas.

No, you’ll never see a Time cover story declaring that the Palestinians really don’t care about peace. Because that would go against the narrative.

Friday pre-three-day weekend briefs

Religious Jews tell the Beit Shemesh nutjobs off: Aish.com’s editors wrote a great letter about the jerks who spit on a little girl who wasn’t dressed they way they wanted her to be dressed.

How dare you call yourself a Hareidi, God-fearing Jew? Your despicable actions are diametrically opposed to Judaism. You are a thug and a hooligan whose conduct, in the words of the statement from Agudath Israel of America “is beyond the bounds of decent, moral – Jewish! – behavior.”

How dare you put us in a position where we need to state loud and clear that we condemn your loathsome actions. We do not share the same theology; we resent having any association with you that necessitates our stark denunciation.

Read it in full. Aish.com is my go-to place when I need to do religious research. It is not Judaism Lite. And while you’re there, check out this wonderful story about the religious rabbi who came home to find his house covered in Christmas decorations by his kind-hearted but unknowing Christian domestic. Compare and contrast: Judaism is truly the religion of tolerance.

Get them before they get you: Israel took out some more terrorists. For kicks and giggles, check out the AP and NY Times versions. The Times says that the Gaza offensive “killed 1300 people”. The AP still goes with the same boilerplate: “killed some 1,400 Palestinians, including hundreds of civilians”, even though Hamas admitted that they lied about how many civilians were killed.

One for fisking: Think I’ll take a stab at this article later, but boy, can the CSM slant against Israel or what? Just a taste:

Although Hamas continues to reject Israel’s existence, it has attempted to keep a tense peace with Israel by trying to rein in rocket fire from more radical groups in the Gaza Strip, The New York Times reports. The efforts mean little to some Israeli military officials.

“We shoot when we’re being shot at,” one security official told Reuters Friday. “It’s clear that Hamas does not have an interest in fanning the flames at this time, but it’s not dousing them either.”

The rest of the article talks about how Khaled Mashaal was lying when he said Hamas is trying to stop the rocket fire. And yet, the reporter uses the words “The efforts mean little to some Israeli military officials.” Gee. I wonder why they’re not impressed with words that say the rocket fire will stop when, in fact, the rockets keep falling? Go figure. Damned Israelis, always against peace with terrorists!

Thursday, briefly

Yeah, sure you will: Apparently, the Iranians think that they can close the Strait of Hormuz if the UN enacts any more sanctions against them. I’m thinking not, and so does the Fifth Fleet. And the Iranians think this is some kind of important announcement: They videotaped a U.S. aircraft carrier in the Gulf of Oman. Um. It would be hard not to catch the floating city on tape. Nobody really believes they’re going to shut down the Straight, anyway. Saudi Arabia has announced it will increase production, and the blockade would harm China way more than the U.S., and the Iranians know that. Posturing, that’s all.

The awesome feminism of Islamic law: Iran is going to execute a woman for adultery. Only they’re not going to stone this one, they’re going to hang her. Don’t you infidels get how merciful they are? I just love hearing people tell me that Sharia law isn’t nearly as bad as we make it out to be. You know, the one that says that a woman’s opinion in court is worth half that of a man, and the one that allows men to have multiple wives but not women to have multiple husbands–awesome equality. Just breathtaking. Ask any Saudi woman.

Turkey massacres Kurdish civilians: Turkey bombed a group of civilians in northern Iraq, killing 35 of them, most of the teenagers smuggling fuel into Turkey. And not very many people care. Bet you didn’t even know they did it. Imagine the outrage if Israel had hit 35 civilians while bombing a Hamas terror target. Let’s review: Turkey violated the border of a sovereign nation to stop a terrorist group from killing its own civilians. Sound familiar? Of course it does. Will there be a world outcry? Don’t make me laugh. Double standard much? Always.

The UN: We honor dictators, too! The United Nations lowered its flags out of “respect” for Kim Jong-il’s death. I don’t know how they manage it, but they managed to lower my respect for them even more. Not that I have any left. Its sort of a “divide by infinity” thing now.

Wednesday morning briefs

Our little co-blogger is all grown up: Soccer Dad has a piece on PJMedia about Tom Friedman. Must-read.

And let the “cycle of violence” accusations begin: The IDF hit a car full of terrorists (alas, only killing one of them) and rockets hit Israel from Gaza.

It’s the annual Bethlehem Clergy Battle: Now, with video! Let’s hear again how it’s Israel that’s screwing up Christian holy sites in Bethlehem. Riiiiight.

Awesome news for Egypt’s Christians: The Islamists who will be ruling Egypt won’t even allow their people to send Christmas greetings to their Christian countrymen. Say goodbye to Egypt’s Copts, who, by the way, are the original inhabitants of Egypt. Their Arab Muslim cousins were the invaders. You won’t, however, hear any sympathy for the native Egyptians being forced out of their homeland by the invading Arabs. Because that goes against the narrative. Now, if they were Palestinians, and the invaders had been Jews, well–that’s a different story.

Tuesday post-holiday weekend briefs

Back at work, and not loving it? Yeah, me too.

Of course they are: The Muslim Brotherhood is over the moon about their offshoot, Hamas. Why the love? Because Hamas is succeeding in getting the world to bend to its will. Watch. Soon, the EU will be demanding that Israel negotiate with the PA even if it’s made up of openly unrepentant terrorists who say, quite plainly, that they will accept a state along the 1949 Armistice lines as a first step towards taking all of “Palestine.”

Openly spouting jihad: The AP put this quote in its recent piece about Hamas and the Muslim Brotherhood in Egypt, and yet, somehow, it didn’t get very high placement in the article.

Haniyeh described Hamas as the “jihadi movement of the Brotherhood with a Palestinian face.’’ He said his visit to the Brotherhood center would confuse and frighten Israel.

That’s funny. I thought Karl Vick told us that Hamas joining the PLO meant that it would become more moderate, not less openly terrorist. Huh. Go figure. (Gee. Karl Vick is silent on the non-moderation of Hamas.)

Muslim ERA Watch: Yeah, like this is gonna stop them. The Egyptian court ordered the military to stop performing “virginity tests” on female prisoners. What an awesome, awesomely feminist religion, that Islam. I can’t wait to hear the apologists explain to me how a virginity test really is a form of feminism that Westerners just can’t understand.

Of course, a story the AP can really sink its teeth into: They don’t cover “honor” killings widely. They don’t cover the lack of equal rights for women in most Muslim countries. But of course, an extremist group of religious nuts mistreating girls in Israel? Wall-to-wall coverage, baby, including video at every link! Outraged editorials and op-eds in the New York Times in 3, 2, 1…

Another Christmas at The Guardian

(This post is to balance somehow that other post by Meryl and tell you that all is well in The Guardian).

Nu, what did you expect? Of course, some people celebrate, some people riot and some people just traditionally dish out the same old, same old.

And here it comes, another Christmas in Bethlehem according to one Phoebe Greenwood*, direct from the location. But if you think it’s about Christmas or even about Bethlehem, you will be mistaken. Of course not, not from the Guardian…

The article is predictably titled If Jesus were to come this year, Bethlehem would be closed.

But first of all I want to declare my personal wish for a Christmas present. One measly** dollar for every time I read in The Guardian the following quote (attributed, surely, to a local priest):

“If Jesus were to come this year, Bethlehem would be closed,” says the priest of Bethlehem’s Beit Jala parish. “He would either have to be born at a checkpoint or at the separation wall. Mary and Joseph would have needed Israeli permission – or to have been tourists.”

Notwithstanding the fact that for this specific Jewish rabbi the powers that be would have found a way to get in. As they have found the way… but a bit later about that.

The rest of the article is totally predictable, and I would like to limit myself to one other quote only:

Father Shomali’s outlook is more glum: “When I look down my church register, many of the historic family names from the area have already gone. In 20 years, I think we will have no more Christians in Bethlehem.”

Sad, ain’t it?

Well, it so happens that this year Ha’aretz decided to publish its own opus on the same place. I mean on Bethlehem. Its title is a bit different: Thousands gather to celebrate Christmas Eve in Bethlehem. And its beginning is a bit different too:

By early evening, the Israeli military, which controls movement in and out of town, said some 55,000 visitors, including foreigners and Arab Christians from Israel, had reached Bethlehem.

Palestinian officials in Bethlehem said that with local tourists included, overall turnout was 120,000 – about 30 percent higher than last year.

Do you believe now that the above mentioned rabbi could somehow squeeze between these throngs? You bet…

And now to that quote from Father Shomali. Of course, Phoebe of the Guardian knows the truth perfectly well, but a reminder from the Guardian’s local sibling – Ha’aretz couldn’t hurt, could it? So:

The number of Christians in the West Bank is on the decline, and many speak of persecution by the Muslim majority, but always anonymously, fearing retribution.

Christians have even lost their majority in Bethlehem where more than two-thirds of the some 50,000 Palestinian residents are now Muslim.

Yep, Phoebe: and for how much do old tattered half-truths go nowadays in your newspaper? I would like to add to my Christmas wish another buck for Father Shomali’s complaint too, if you don’t mind.

OK, so I am hanging my (freshly laundered) sock near that oil stove, in lieu of a fireplace. Please, Santa, be a mensch…

(*) In favor of Phoebe: she penned a surprising piece Gaza Christians long for days before Hamas cancelled Christmas. Check it out. Meryl, in fact, already told about that one.

(**) That was a figger of speech. A dollar is still a dollar, although… oh well.
