ESA Stands By SOPA

Take a look at this list. We love the companies on this list because, for the most part they make great games. The problem is that they are members of the Entertainment Software Association, and by proxy they support SOPA. And, according to the statement issued to Joystiq today, the ESA is not backing down from that support.

Belarus Declares Foreign Web Site Surfing Illegal

January 3, 2012

Starting January 6th, Belarus, a former Soviet state that became independent in 1991 after the collapse of the Soviet Union, will restrict what its citizens can do on the Internet, thanks to new legislation. The new law requires that anyone doing business in the country must utilize fully local Internet domains when carrying out their activities online. Basically, this law criminalizes the use of web sites such as Amazon or Google if they don't have a web site within the country.

One Million Copies of Super Meat Boy Sold

January 3, 2012

According to a tweet from Team Meat, Super Meat Boy has managed to sell one million copies since its release in October. The gory-but-cute platformer was developed by Team Meat (Edmund McMillen and Tommy Refenes) and was released in October 2011 on Xbox Live Arcade as part of Microsoft's GameFeast promotion. The game was later released on Valve's Steam digital distribution platform. The game garnered critical praise from the media and was embraced by fans.

BioWare Explains Recent SWTOR Bans

BioWare has explained some of the recent Star Wars: The Old Republic bans and vowed to make adjustments to areas where players have been found to be exploiting. Last week some players were banned from playing because they were looting containers in planet Ilum at too low a level - a move that apparently made many in the SWTOR community upset. Community manager Stephen Reid took to the SWTOR website to explain exactly what had happened and why some players were banned.

As Canadian Politicians Push Anti-Piracy Legislation, Staffers Enjoy Stealing Software

Another day, another group of government officials pushing anti-piracy laws while they are blissfully unaware that their staffers are downloading stolen games, movies and other forms of entertainment. This time out it's the Canadian Conservative majority government. Recently the ruling party in Canada introduced the Canadian Copyright Modernization Act Bill C-11, which would criminalize the act of software circumventing - including the making available to the public software or techniques used to circumvent digital rights management software locks. Serious Sam: Double D Developer Asks ESA Members to Fight SOPA

Nathan Fouts of Mommy's Best Games - the company behind Serious Sam: Double D - has written an open letter to members of the Entertainment Software Association (ESA) asking them to urge the trade group to drop its support of SOPA. He also urged gamers, supposedly represented by the ESA and its Video Game Voters Network, to urge the group to drop its support of the bill as well.

Brian Crecente Leaves Kotaku, Stephen Totilo Takes Over

Kotaku's long-time editor-in-chief, Brian Crecente announced today that he is leaving the website for greener -- and at this point unknown -- pastures. In a lengthy missive detailing his accomplishments and personal triumphs and tragedies, Crecente announced that Stephen Totilo would take the reins of the site as its new editor-in-chief effective immediately. Before coming to Kotaku in 2009, Totilo worked for MTV's game site MTV Multiplayer.

Make the Game 2012 Launched

Magazine publisher Computec Media announced details on the second round of its international game developer contest, Make the Game 2012. Indie developers interested in registering for the international browser and social games competition have until April 16 to do so. This year Computec Media plans to invest 1 million Euros in the contest to find the best new browser and social network games. Entries will be judged by a five-member jury of "experts," who will ultimately award prizes to up to three promising games.

Nintendo Sells 4 Million 3DS Units to Date

January 3, 2012

Nintendo announced in a press release this morning that it managed to sell more than 12 million hardware units in the United States during 2011. That figure is comprised of DS, Wii and 3DS hardware. The Wii sold 4.5 million units in 2011, the DS sold 3.4 million, and the 3DS sold 4 million, according to Nintendo.

The 3DS managed to sell more units than the Wii did in its first nine months of availability, according to the company. Of course the 3DS enjoyed something that the Wii didn't need in its first year of release - a major price cut.

Flurry: 1.2 Billion Android and iOS Apps Downloaded in the Last Week of Dec.

According to new data released by app analytics firm Flurry, 1.2 billion applications were downloaded for Android and iOS devices between December 25 and December 31. Earlier in the week the group predicted that in that same period it expected new Android and iOS device activations to be right around 6.8 million. Now they are saying that the number is probably closer to 20 million. Read more

Atari Takes Down iOS Games for Having a 'Passing Resemblance ' to Battlezone, Claims Developer

January 3, 2012

According to iOS game developer Black Powder Media, Atari is removing games from the App Store (with the help of Apple, of course) that resemble anything from its extensive back catalog of classic games. The company developed a game called Vector Tanks 3, which bears a slight resemblance to Battlezone. Atari has also threatened legal action against iOS developers who are developing games that it deems are rip-offs of its owned IPs.

Supergiant Games Sells 500,000 Units of Bastion

Supergiant Games' popular PC and Xbox Live Arcade action-RPG Bastion has sold more than 500,000 copies to date, according to a recent company blog post. Bastion launched for XBLA in July and on Steam in August, and received praise from both critics and players for its unique style and it's wonderful on-the-fly narrative system. The company noted in its blog post that recent price cuts and sales promotions on both platforms helped them attain the numbers they currently enjoy.

Spain Implements Strict File-Sharing Law

While U.S. politicians get ready to return to fight over SOPA, new legislation to combat file-sharing in Spain has been approved. The legislation, called the "Sustainable Economy Law" (LES), was specifically designed to stop Spanish Internet users from accessing file-sharing sites either by blocking them at the ISP level or by shutting them down completely.
