[2000-00-00]

For those of you living in Central Europe you know all too well that it has been a brutally merciless winter. Things are starting to look up though. After months of deliberation, it looks as if the sun is finally ready to return from its self-imposed solar sabbatical. What better way to celebrate the arrival of spring than to get out and see some live music at one of your favorite clubs, bars or venues. This spring there is a lot of great local, national and international musicians playing all over Central Europe. If you are in need of some direction, we have compiled a small list of upcoming shows that we recommend you check out in select cities across Poland, Czech Republic and Slovakia. Regardless of where you are however, we encourage you to get out and see some live music. Enjoy!...  read more!

Former Drummer for the Ramones- Marky Ramone
Punk Legend Marky Ramone talks about his adventures touring with the Russian Band Tarakany
[2006-03-05]

from
You recently toured Europe with the great Russian punk band Tarakany, performing as Marky Ramone & the Pinhead Army. How did you get together with Dima and the Tarakany guys?
I went there with my band after the Ramones retired. The Ramones never wanted to go there, but I did; I felt, "what's the big deal?" So, I went there on my own with my own group. They came to the shows, and then I went back and they asked me to do some touring with them, doing Ramones songs. They are big Ramones fans and there are a lot of Ramones fans in Russia. I said, alright, these are the songs I want to do. You can't say no, because the kids want to hear it. I went out there again because I loved it the first time, and that's where I met them. They are really cool guys. ...  read more!

A Year in the Life of a Music Revolution
[2005-11-22]

from
This is non-human, non-freedom, non-pleasure
This non-love, non-something-to-treasure
Ribbons of orange, the colour we chose -
Keep it up, people, victory?s close!
TNMK ? ?Pomaranchi?

It?s been exactly a year since Ukraine surprised itself and the rest of the world with a wave of mass protests against a rigged presidential election which quickly became known as the Orange Revolution. Over a hundred thousand people poured onto the streets of Ukraine?s capital Kiev to demand a repeat vote and after over a month long stand-off the opposition leader Viktor Yushchenko was elected president at the end of 2004.

Metelkova Mesto: The Anatomy of a Slovenian Cultural Movement
[2006-03-11]

from
The Slovenian capital of Ljubljana may appear to be just another quaintly idyllic, historically rich, economically tourist friendly Central-European city. But if you poke around the city a bit and start asking some questions, you will quickly discover that this charming city has a robust and thriving alternative and countercultural art scene. At the very heart of this scene is the vaunted Metelkova mesto. The Mesto is an interconnected network of buildings and open spaces which (depending on the time of day) function as galleries, studios, bars, night clubs, music venues, lecture halls, internet clubs, youth centers, libraries, restaurants and pretty much anything else you can imagine. On any given day or night of the week, and at any time of year, there is always something going on somewher at Metelkova. In 2006, this self sustaining community is possibly the most artistically dynamic, musically vibrant, creatively experimental and intelectually progressive places in all of Central Europe. Metelkova mesto did not appear out of nowhere however. The history of this incredible place is as dramatic and contreversial as the art that it supports. Following is a brief history of Metelkova written by those that fought long and hard to bring it into existence and that continue to work tirelessly to coordinate and create its diverse projects, performances and programs. ...  read more!

The Warsaw Village Band- Uprooting
Not Folkin? Around -Part 1- An Interview with Wojciech Krzak of the Warsaw Village Band.
[2006-04-04]

from
After a recent sold out show in Krakow, Poland, we sat down with Woiciech, violinist (and chief anthropologist) of the Warsaw Village Band. For the uninitiated, the WVB is a traditional Roots or Folk band that blends traditional Mazovian (the region of Poland to which Warsaw belongs) Beats and instrumentation with Dub Rhythms, trance Grooves and Punk Rock Energy. As you might imagine, this postmodern amalgamation is truly infectious and wholly original. The groups efforts have not gone unnoticed either. In 2004 they were the recipients of the prestigious BBC World Music Award for Best Newcomers. Since the Bands inception they have been vociferously performing and touring: turning heads, raising eyebrows and inspiring hoedowns wherever they go. ...  read more!

Prague Sounds Off
[2006-01-24]

from

When looking for new electronic music in central Europe, Prague isn?t the first place that jumps to mind. Though long a hub for underground rock and punk, the Czech capital is known for producing commercial dance DJs and that?s about it. This reputation is so pervasive that when I asked certain Slovak electronic music savants for contacts in the Prague experimental scene they jokingly replied, ?you mean there actually is a scene??...  read more!
