About David Villa

David Villa Sánchez is a Spanish football player who currently plays for Valencia CF in the Spanish La Liga as well as with the Spain national football team. His was nicknamed 'El Guaje' (The Kid) in his hometown in Asturias, Spain, and he got his professional breakthrough at his local club Sporting de Gijón, where he made his debut in 2000.


David Villa leads Spain National Team

David Villa was part of Spain's 23 man team for the 2006 FIFA World Cup in Germany, and was chosen to start next to Fernando Torres in the first match with Ukraine. Villa scored twice (once as a penalty kick) in that match which was is first World Cup appearance. He kicked one more goal as a penalty as Spain was defeated by former world champions France 1-3 in a Group stage match. He finished tied for second place as Spain's top scorer in the World Cup with 3 goals.

David Villa's appearance for Spain at the EURO 2008 was even more impressive than the World Cup, as Villa leads not just Spain but all teams as the top goal scorer in the tournament. At his first match Villa scored three goals for Spain as they beat Russia at Innsbruck, Austria 4-1. Villa also took part in the play that resulted Spain's 4th goal. Against Sweden, Villa scored a goal in the 92nd minute to give Spain a 2-1 win against a tough competitor. David Villa leads the Euro 2008 Top Scorers chart with 4 goals, ahead of Lucas Podolski of Germany, Hakan Yakin of Switzerland with 3 goals each. David Villa's last goal made him Spain's leading EURO goal scorer of all time with four goals in just two matches.
