despite the setbacks they have had, they never threw in the towel. My first encounter with the band was through their official release ‘Twilight Of Humnaity' from 2002. But besides a self-titled demo in 1996, with ‘Shadows Of Reality’, the band had also released a full-length album on their own. It is now almost impossible to get that thing and you can forget about the chance of getting the demo. The better that the band and Pure Steel Records treat us on 'Shadows Of The Past’ this month.

As the title already suggests, we are not dealing with a new Zandelle album, but a collection of old songs that have been re-recorded for this. First of all we get four songs on the ‘Zandelle' demo, followed by six tracks from the debut. Despite the fact that they have used modern technology to record these songs, the band has left the songs in their value, and so has kept the old-school charm intact. These compositions are quite simple, but still sound very catchy. Although the bad has grown musically over the years and has developed its sound (in the positive sense), with these old songs it becomes clear that they have always kept true to their original sound. Besides the old songs the compilation contains 'Unleashed'; a previously unreleased track, taken from the 'Vengeance Rising' recordings. Of course this song would have fitted perfectly on that album perfectly appropriate and I am glad that it still has seen the light of day after all. With ‘Scream My Name’ we also get a brand new song, which is very much in line with the latest album ‘Flames Of Rage’ and also reminds me a bit of the atmosphere of Savatage's ‘Sirens’. This is a tasty Zandelle track makes me even thirstier for the next album. And finally we get a good version of Whitesnake's ‘Bad Boys’.

But that's not all! This release also contains a second disc, containing the original versions of the re-recorded songs. So you can compare and also choose which version you prefer to hear. Compliments for the band and the label for this! ‘Shadows Of The Past' is not only an interesting release for its delightful, old-school heavy metal, but also shows the band's development over the years. The scene today is loaded with bands that take hold of the old feel of heavy metal. Zandelle did so fifteen years ago already and it's a shame to see that due to the circumstances they have fallen behind a bit. Let's hope the next album comes soon and that they finally get the recognition they deserve. But until then we can enjoy these (new) oldies.

Ten points for the title. While "charming" might not be the first adjective that comes to mind when you're viewing a release called Skull Fuck, it fits Pendulum's mini album surprisingly well. The opening instrumental Chamber Of Souls is very atmospheric and eerie, a total contrast to the savage rush of the title track that follows. Kindred Spirit is essentially a mixture of these two styles, whereas the last piece focuses on a pummeling attack on the senses. The production quality is rudimentary at best, and the album effectively sounds like a "live" recording, which is just a perfect match for these songs that tend to end almost abruptly. Skull Fuck is awfully short and, in retrospective, a mere drop in the ocean. But it could be also the most important single reason why a lot of those newer bands who desperately try to act tough and sound "underground" should just collectively give up and jump off the cliff, for they cannot possibly re-create the same unique feel of a lost age that this recording so nicely and fully manifests.

Although Penetrator's Now... opens with a heavy and somewhat brooding instrumental, the rest of the album proves to be a dose of fast and rather straightforward thrash metal. The female vocals are appropriately rough and more than occasionally very similar to Sabina Classen's style just before she started using deeper growls, and it is not only for this reason that the band's sound can bring Holy Moses to mind. The list of actually noteworthy features is not that long, but at least it is not too hard to find this recording likeable. Due to the short total length, there is no time to get bored with these songs, and in the end Now... can be something of a small positive listening experience after all.

The initial promise of Reborn's Renewed For Revenge may not appear that great, but somehow this album turns out to be one of those releases that keep growing on you. The band's sound is fairly uncomplicated and accessible, also sufficiently powerful which is notably helped by the street-credible vocals. The delivery is consistent and strong, with a definite old-school Slayer feel, and tracks like Regeneration and Slave Of Darkness deserve to be highlighted for their persistent yet steadily increasing pressure that slowly but surely contributes to a noteworthy memorable effect in the end. There's an obvious religious tint in this music, yet it doesn't really affect the result in either good or bad. While Renewed For Revenge could seem quite ordinary at first, there's enough of some true, honest spirit in these songs that it is simply not possible to ignore the effort.

Trizna's debut album has some genuine curiosity value. Out Of Step starts off with a speedy intro, and I'll Never Be Your Slave is a satisfying thrasher, one of the most balanced pieces on this album. The instruments sound mostly fine although the production is a bit hollow. It's some other aspects that make a slightly clumsy albeit also ambitious impression at times. In addition to some short experimental bits here and there, the list of songs includes a pompous power metal/rock piece, one humorous Christmas track in a true thrash metal vein - and a seemingly serious ABBA cover song, something that borders on ridiculous. Make no mistake, there is some pretty adequate and fast material on this release, but the quality is way too uneven. At least you can be sure that Out Of Step is guaranteed to sound more varied than the norm in this genre.

When you like old-fashioned thrash without all kinds of hoo-ha I bet you’d probably dig Sweden’s Entrench’s debut album. After several demos this foursome recorded a striking album that reminds of the early days of Kreator, Destruction and Slayer. If someone would have told me this album was recorded in 1985 I would believe that. In this day and age perhaps not all that original, but fans of furious thrash metal probably will like this. This album will be released on vinyl by Blood Harvest by the way.

Back in 1996, Swedish death metal act Edge of Sanity released Crimson - a shocking musical statement that pushed the boundaries of extreme metal as we knew it. The brilliant sci-fi lyrical story, combined with crushingly brutal Swedish-styled riffs and an epic forty minute progressive rock-influenced composition made Crimson one of the most important death metal releases in the genre's history. So why did I start out my review by giving a brief synopsis of this fifteen year old masterpiece? Because I could very well see Necrodeath's Idiosyncrasy having the very same effect within the modern thrash metal crowd.

This single forty minute composition obviously bears resemblance to Crimson in its length, but also in its musical vision and adventurism. Idiosyncrasy may not reach the masterful craft found on Crimson, but I do sincerely hope that this adventurous effort puts Necrodeath on the extreme metal map at large. If you haven't checked out these Italian death/thrashers yet, Idiosyncrasy is a damn good place to start listening.

Idiosyncrasy sticks to groove-infested modern thrash metal throughout much of its duration, but it also features lots of tempo shifts and dynamic changes. Necrodeath also adds a few acoustic guitar portions, giving the album a nice contrast between melody and brutality. Of course, Idiosyncrasy has an "epic" edge due to its 40 minute length for just one song, but it also has a few other progressive tendencies that aren't often found in modern death/thrash. In addition to crushingly heavy thrash riffs, there are also some twisted and jazz-influenced bits that show that Necrodeath are very much interested in experimentation and innovation. The sleek and modern production also suits the music perfectly.

Idiosyncrasy is a pretty original album, and that's one of the first things I hope for when listening to newer releases from more experienced bands. It may seldom deviate from a fairly standard modern thrash formula, but its epic scope and progressive tendencies always keep things interesting.

One of the albums that has spoilt me for life and has made and kept me a devoted heavy metal was the 1981 gem ‘Fire Down Under’ of the American band Riot, one big chunk of aggression nicely dressed in fantastic songs. Despite of the fact that they were never capable of reaching that quality level anymore, I kept on following the band throughout the years and they have always delivered strong metal albums ever since. Especially the 1988 album ‘Thundersteel’ was able to approach the ‘Fire Down Under’ quality level. That mainly had to do with the vocal contribution of singer Tony Moore, who unfortunately left the band again after the 1990 album ‘The Privilege Of Power’. Founding member Mark Reale realized that the so-called ‘Thundersteel’ line-up was one of the strongest Riot line-ups ever and therefore he has made an effort to get the same guys together for the ‘Immortal Soul’ album. Luckily for us it was no failed attempt and he genuinely succeeded in getting everybody together again.

With Tony Moore in the band there’s been quite a change style-wise, since the more melodic approach that they had during the last couple of years has been replaced by a traditional US metal type of style and that seems to have been the right choice. Opening track ‘Riot’ is quite frankly very impressive, with breathtakingly fast guitar riffs and a singer who can handle this amount of violence with ease and delivers a very solid vocal contribution. It needs to be said though that ‘Riot’ is by far the best song on offer here and that might be a pity, since the highlight is already placed at the beginning of the album. But also tracks like ‘Wings Are For Angels’ and ‘Still Your Man’ are absolutely worthwhile to check out for the traditional metal fan and as such there’s a lot more great stuff to be found on this ‘Immortal Soul’ release. Let’s hope that Mark Reale can keep this line-up together, because in my opinion ‘Immortal Soul’ is the strongest Riot record since ‘Thundersteel’. And that feels awfully good…

The Norwegian Throne Of Katarsis is now up for their third album to which the title of 'Ved Graven' has been given. Throne Of Katarsis biggest failing has been that they wrote songs that were too long, such as former colleague Roel F. also remarked on ’Helvete - Det Iskalde Mørket’. But for 'Ved Graven’ the band decided to use a slightly different approach. Indeed, the songs are shorter. Recorded live in the studio, the songs sound quite spontaneously and have a typical black metal production; grizzly, organic and unpolished. Fitting the music well, which can be described as sometimes lingering and brooding, but also words like raw, aggressive and cold can be applied often. Throne Of Katarsis has been musically inspired by the old masters of the genre like Darkthrone and Gorgoroth, but the dark atmosphere created in the end, is enough to grant this album its legitimacy. Good album, especially for the old-school black metal fans.

"The Serpent Creation" is a furious offering, not having much to do with the more classic-sounding demo. This is more modern back/thrash with casual technical death metal elements, quite fast and energetic, with frequent brutal blast-beats scattered all over, but at the same time incorporating haunting, beautiful melodies in the spirit of later-period Emperor and Dimmu Borgir. Now the band sound like the "father" one: Deathchain, where all of the musicians involved here also take part, only not as technical, and with more brutal insertions.

A decent slab of the good old school thrash which comes served with a healthy doze of 90's speed metal, resulting in vigorous, energetic pieces topped by not very suitable death metal vocals, which sound particularly ridiculous on the several attempts at sing-along choruses, which may cause a few laughs along the way. Still, the guitar work is not bad at all, if we exclude the thin screaming leads, and uncompromising Slayer-esque headbangers like "T.M.I.S." & "Until You Die" will make you jump around in no time, while more epic speed metal cuts like "Death Or Glory" will make you sing along with nostalgic memories of a movement long gone. "Annihilation Of Mankind" is a cool heavy stomper with capable melodic hooks, and the closing "The Human Nature" may come as a surprise, being a long (7-min) romantic ballad, which acquits itself with the best lead sections on the album.
