A flail is an agricultural tool used for threshing to separate grains from their husks.
It is usually made from two or more large sticks attached by a short chain; one stick is held and swung, causing the other (the swipple) to strike a pile of grain, loosening the husks. The precise dimensions and shape of flails were determined by generations of farmers to suit the particular grain they were harvesting. For example, flails used by farmers in Quebec to process wheat were generally made from two pieces of wood, the handle being about 1.5 m (4.9 ft) long by 3 cm (1.2 in) in diameter, and the second stick being about 1 m (3.3 ft) long by about 3 cm (1.2 in) in diameter, with a slight taper towards the end. Flails for other grains, such as rice or spelt, would have had different dimensions.
Flails have generally fallen into disuse in many nations because of the availability of technologies such as combine harvesters that require much less manual labour. But in many places, such as Minnesota, wild rice can only be harvested legally using manual means, specifically through the use of a canoe and a flail that is made of smooth, round wood no more than 30 inches long.
This is a tough, well made 2.2-2.5 mm (13-14 gauge) thick bascinet with 1.6 mm (16 gauge) visor. It's quite heavy and impervious to swords. The single-handed axe can dent it but it's basically just cosmetic damage. Even the hammer spike can't penetrate it. It is a popular weapon today I think largely because it conforms to our idea of medieval brutality. I rambled on for about twenty minutes about these weapons, so had to cut this one down a lot. I'll do at least one more, though. Main flail shown owned by Dr David Tetard. Thanks to the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, for three of the flail illustrations. All three of the weapons look a bit dubious, and I'd say that the last of the three is a fake. Lindybeige: a channel of archaeology...

Fun at Stevens Pass. Mostly Unedited, put together in minutes.
This was during a shoot at film school. We had some extra film left over so we tried REAL SLOW MOTION!!! It looks so damn awesome.
Flails?
Random clip I threw together with all of my scrap footage from various trips as well as locals flailing about at home.
I've been making these small dance films for about a year and a half, and much of it started with me "running around in my living room," as one curator put it. Lately, however, my energies have been invested in more involved, devised choreographies with a full company of dancers, so when I turned to my latest living room of a studio, I found myself fidgeting to the point of flailing in an attempt to find a dance. And yet, by imposing a frame which restricted my own view of the body, I was overwhelmed with a feeling of dismemberment and a disjointing of the body. From this, my newfound body cultivated a dance in cycles of flailing collapse and fidgeting recovery.
Not enough good footage so i made a falling video, hope you find it handy for killing some time. Big thanks to my friend James Chase and his really nice camera ( to bad we couldn't shoot more!!). Thanks Ryan for coming out and skating!!! Deal with the quality...METAL!! I'll make a good video eventually I swear! Switchback Longboards F%*K YOU!!
Filmed in the South End in Boston, at the Metro PCS on Washington, next to the new Church of Scientology building. How fitting. Wacky waving inflatable arm flailing tube man!
