Recorded last year, Cleveland noise-makers Swindlella are using the time of the year to release a special Christmas album called Purr rump pum pum pum. In comparison to their last release, the Titanic concept album A Woman’s Heart Is An Ocean of Secrets, these Xmas tracks are low-key for Swindlella’s standards, and you might even call them catchy at times.  They still take the opportunity to go into noise frenzies in opener “Rudolf Hitler” and standout “Jingle Bells.”  In between those fits, Swindlella shows a love for the jazz on their piano-and-bells cover of Vince Guaraldi  Trio’s “Christmas Time Is Here.”  Other Christmas songs represented are “Frosty The Snowman,” “First Noel,” “Silent Night,” and the album closer “We Wish You a Merry Christmas.”  Check out a few of the tracks above, and download the full album by clicking on the album art above!

Spirituals is the moniker of Jackson, MS-native, jazz lover, and electronic genius, Tyler Tadlock. His debut album is a sexual fusion of pseudo-jazz and sample-heavy IDM, with a result that’s nothing short of perfection. Opening track “Wanderings” moves progressively through glitchy synth-based samplings and a drum-n-bongo beatmaker, but leads into perhaps my favorite track, “Pilsner,” where the jazz influence is beyond evident. Beginning with a few measures of sly drumming, Tadlock builds it into a cohesive flow of xylophones and sax samples.  Also included here is non-album track, “You Would’ve Faked It,” a Stereogum-loved floating gem that really should have made the cut.  Expect ten tracks of electro-jazz beauty on Spirituals, a mind-massaging experience, much like if Flying Lotus took some ritalin and then ate a bunch of lemon-lime popsicles.  Waaga Records dropped Spirituals on June 22nd digitally and no news of a physical release, but will be releasing a remix EP for “Wanderings” on August 24th.

More bands need to be like Return of Simple and bring back jazz. They do it well, blending it with elements of pop for a perfect fusion. “Hover” might have the dreamiest ending I’ve heard in years.
