Chimp, Bonobo, Gorilla, Orangutan, Siaman-The Great Ape
Chimp, Bonobo, Gorilla, Orangutan, Siaman-The Great Ape
The video shows a comparison of the 4 great apes and the gibbon. The Chimpanzee, Bonobo, Orangutan, and Gorilla are considered the great apes and the Siamang and Gibbon are among the lesser apes. The gorilla is shown probing for food, a common behavior of the gorilla. ***The Chimpanzee -Chimp or Common Chimpanzee- (Pan troglodytes) is the species, with the bonobo, considered the most closely related to humans. They can weigh up to 155 lbs and stand up to 4 feet tall. Like people, they have long lives. For example Cheeta, the star of the movie, Tarzan, is 75 years old. They are native to Africa and four subspecies exist. They are highly intelligent, make elaborate use of tools, and can use language. A chimpanzee named Washoe learned up to 800 signs in American Sign Language. Researchers into chimpanzee language include Sally Boysen, Ohio State University, (who has taught chimpanzees to communicate using a computer), Noam Chomsky, and David Premack. Although chimpanzees are shorter than most people, they are much stronger. The average Chimpanzee has over 5 times the upper-body strength of a human male. A chimp, even a young one, can easily overpower a grown man. ***The Bonobo, also called the Pygmy or Gracile Chimpanzee (Pan paniscus) belongs to the species (with the common chimpanzee) that is most closely related to humans. Its DNA is 98% identical to that of humans and some researchers think they should be classified with the human species, ie, Homo paniscus. Bonobos have ...

The Orangutans are fed at 2 pm each day and there were more visitors here including a group of UK volunteers from Orangutan Foundation. Many Orangutans appeared out of the forest to snarf down bananas, other fruits and milk even before the "official" feeding time. They're no dummies and hang around the food storage areas. You are not allowed anywhere on the premises without an official guide. These are very strong apes, don't think twice about approaching humans and grabbing whatever they want.

Cute Dancing Orangutan Baby
Although this baby orangutan is an orphan, the love and attention he receives every day at the OFI Care Center has helped him to feel like a "Fortunate Son." Hopefully, he will grow up big and strong and one day dance in the rain forest just as he dances here. Orangutans are endangered and need our help. You can buy rainforest for OFI and foster an orphan just like this darling baby by going to the official Orangutan Foundation International website: www.orangutan.org The founder of OFI is Dr. Birute Mary Galdikas.
