National Biodiversity Strategies and Action Plans (NBSAPs)

Welcome

National Biodiversity Strategies and Action Plans (NBSAPs) are the principal instruments for implementing the Convention at the national level (Article 6). The Convention requires countries to prepare a national biodiversity strategy (or equivalent instrument) and to ensure that this strategy is mainstreamed into the planning and activities of all those sectors whose activities can have an impact (positive and negative) on biodiversity.

Highlights

A series of regional and sub-regional capacity-building workshops is being organized during 2011 to assist countries in establishing national targets in the framework of the Aichi Biodiversity Targets and in revising and updating national biodiversity strategies and action plans in line with the Strategic Plan for Biodiversity 2011-2020. The workshops are being organized with the generous financial support of Japan and other donors. COP-10 urges Parties to develop their national targets by COP-11, and to revise their NBSAP (integrating their national targets) and adopt the revised NBSAP as a policy instrument by COP-11 or COP-12.
