Partnership forged between Japan Committee for the International Union for Conservation of Nature and the Secretariat of the Convention on Biological Diversity
Kanazawa, Japan, 20 December 2011– The Secretariat of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) and the Japan Committee for the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCNJ) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with a view to promoting greater awareness amongst civil society organisations in Japan and abroad and join forces for the successful implementation of the Strategic Plan for Biodiversity 2011-2020 and the Aichi Targets.

2011-2020 United Nations Biodiversity Decade Launched in Kanazawa City, Ishikawa Prefecture, Japan

The United Nations Decade on Biodiversity (UNDB) was launched in Kanazawa, Japan, on 17 December 2011, in a ceremony organized by the United Nations University, in collaboration with the Ministry of Environment of Japan, Ishikawa Prefecture and Kanazawa City, and the Secretariat of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD).

UN Decade on Biodiversity launched at Meso-American workshop on National Biodiversity Strategies
Montreal, 16 December 2011 – Costa Rica was the host for the launch of the United Nations Decade on Biodiversity for the Central American Region, setting in motion a process to build a future of life in harmony with nature. In addition to the launch, 40 participants from nine countries attended a regional capacity-building workshop on the updating and revising of National Biodiversity Strategies and Action Plans (NBSAPs) for countries of Meso-America, held in San José, Costa Rica, from 28 November to 2 December 2011.

Rio+20 conference should capitalize on the values that forests offer to sustainable development

UN Biodiversity Chief Signs Memorandum of Understanding with World Future Council

Latvia becomes the first country to ratify the Nagoya – Kuala Lumpur Supplementary Protocol on Liability and Redress
Montreal, 7 December 2011 – On 30 November 2011, Latvia became the first country to ratify the Nagoya - Kuala Lumpur Supplementary Protocol on Liability and Redress to the Cartagena Protocol on Biosafety. The first ratification comes just over a year after the Supplementary Protocol was adopted at a historic biodiversity summit held in October 2010 in Nagoya, Japan.

Scientific body of global biodiversity treaty adopts eight recommendations
Montreal, 21 November 2011 – At the first meeting of the Convention’s Subsidiary Body on Scientific, Technical, and Technological Advice since the adoption of the Strategic Plan for Biodiversity 2011-2020 at the tenth meeting of the Conference of the Parties to the Convention, held last October in Nagoya, Japan, representatives of government, indigenous and local communities, non governmental organizations and civil society met in Montreal from 7 to 11 November 2011 to discuss a variety of scientific, technical and technological issues related to the implementation of the Convention on Biological Diversity.

Montreal, 8 November 2011 –At the margins of the fifteenth meeting of Subsidiary Body on Scientific Technical and Technological Advice, the Executive Secretary of the Secretariat of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) and the Global Director, Biodiversity Conservation Group, of the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) signed a supplementary agreement on 7 November 2011 for the implementation of the Strategic Plan for Biodiversity 2011-2020 in relation to invasive alien species.

Scientific body of global biodiversity treaty discusses biodiversity indicators at Montreal meeting

Uruguay ratifies the Cartagena Protocol on Biosafety

United Kingdom releases a new biodiversity strategy in response to the Strategic Plan for Biodiversity 2011-2020 and the Aichi Biodiversity Targets
In accordance with the commitment to develop an updated national biodiversity strategy and action plan, made at the tenth meeting of the Conference of the Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity, held in Nagoya, Japan, from 18 to 29 October 2010 the United Kingdom Department of Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra) published Biodiversity 2020: A strategy for England’s wildlife and ecosystem services on 19 August 2011.

Rio Conventions Pavilion helps raise awareness
Montreal, 26 October 2011 – Over the two weeks of the tenth meeting of the Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD), held in Changwon, Republic of Korea, from 10 to 21 October 2011, more than one thousand partners and Parties discussed themes relevant to the three Rio Conventions, showcasing implementation of the Conventions at both local and national levels in the Rio Conventions Pavilion. This was the first convening of the Pavilion at a meeting of the Conference of the Parties to the Convention on Desertification.

Djibouti becomes sixty-fifth signatory of the Nagoya Protocol on genetic resources
Montreal, 21 October 2011 – Djibouti, on 19 October 2011, became the latest country to sign the Nagoya Protocol on Access to Genetic Resources and the Fair and Equitable Sharing of Benefits Arising from Their Utilization to the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD), bringing the number of signatories to sixty-five. The Protocol will enter into force 90 days after deposit of the fiftieth instrument of ratification.

World Association of Zoos and Aquariums mobilized for the United Nations Decade on Biodiversity
Montreal, 14 October 2011 – At its annual conference, and in a unanimous resolution, the World Association of Zoos and Aquariums (WAZA) formally endorsed the United Nations Decade on Biodiversity (UNDB) and decided to develop a framework to guide the participation of zoos and aquariums in the achievement of the Global Strategic Plan for Biodiversity.
