Get ready for school with Ms Rachel and Elmo! We are so excited to share this special video that’s packed with learning, key skills to prepare for preschool and kindergarten and fun kids songs and nursery rhymes! Join Ms Rachel and Elmo in singing, “This Is The Way We Go To School,” “The ABC Song” and practice 30 preschool skills!
The episode starts with Ms Rachel helping Elmo with his morning routine before he goes off to school! They model each step to getting ready! Routines are so helpful for little ones! Some children benefit from visuals for each step. It can be helpful to practice your morning routine before school starts.
Next Ms Rachel and Elmo sing their ABCs together. (The Alphabet Song) This is a great song for your little one to know before they start school. Some children only know the letters in order. Practice recognizing them out of order as well!
Ms Rachel then models counting with cars and one to one correspondence, an important early math skill. Then we do our counting song, “1-20 Song.” Practice counting with your chid throughout the day, such as counting how many apples you are buying at the the store or how many stuffed animals your child is playing with.
Next Ms Ashley does a fun game with the letter B and we sing our Phonics Song together. Ms Rachel created a motion for each letter which helps children with memorizing their letter sounds.
Herbie then asks the children to help him figure out which words rhyme. Being able to identify and come up with rhymes is an important skill.
Next Ms Rachel models what a full day of school might look like. When children know what to expect, they feel more comfortable with new situations. Ms Rachel also mentions throughout the video that the child’s grown up will be coming back to get them and they will go home at the end of the day. It may help to bring a laminated family photo or a special stuffy from home.
Mr Aron then talks a bit about another preschool skill, opposites!
Next Ms Rachel teaches the days of the week and the months of the year with a catchy “Days of the Week Song” and “Months of The Year Song.” Kids songs & nursery rhymes are so helpful for learning.
We then talk once more about how first we go to school, then we go home at the end of the day. We are aiming with this video to help with butterflies and nervousness about being apart from parents and entering school.
Then we sing the classic kids song, “The Wheels on the Bus” This song is so great for practicing imitation and gestures and it’s so fun! Get ready to dance along!
Next Ms Rachel and Ashley model pretend play and teach the colors. Ms Rachel also models getting frustrated and taking a deep breath. As we mentioned, emotional regulation is such an important preschool skill. It’s actually the skill Kindergarten teachers said is the most important preschool skill in a survey.
We then sing “Bubble, Bubble Pop” a fun kids song that teaches colors and numbers.
Next Ms Ashley goes over how to raise your hand and plays a listening game.
After that Ms Rachel quizzes the children on whether they know their first name, last name, middle name and full name. She also encourages children to start learning to write their name. Give your toddlers large crayons to color with to strengthen fine motor skills.
Next we have a learning cartoon that practices knowing the concepts of same and different.
Then we move to practicing all of our phonics sounds and gestures! We take breaks throughout the alphabet and sing fun kids songs and nursery rhymes such as “Bingo,” “Lazy Lion” and “I’m So Happy.”
We go over sharing, trading and taking turns which are very important preschool prep skills that are often overlooked. When a child has good social skills and emotional regulation skills, they are more likely to succeed academically and make friends! Then we sing “I Could Be Your Friend” an original song!
Then we go over our shapes with a fun elephant toy, which is a great math preschool skill. We sing our kids song, “Square Song.” We also sing “If You Should Meet an Elephant.”
Next we talk about how it’s ok to have big feelings and sing our “Big Feelings” song. It’s normal to have big feelings, we just need tools to manage them.
Ms Rachel ends by sharing some of her experience with the first day of school and with some loving encouragement to the children watching!
We hope you enjoyed Ms Rachel + Sesame Street as much as we did!
This video is perfect for toddlers, preschoolers and even kindergarteners! Check out our channel for more toddler learning videos, toddler dance along videos, kids songs & nursery rhymes mixes and learn to read videos! Caffeine and Adenosine Receptors
We are all familiar with caffeine's stimulatory effects, but how does it actually work? Check out this episode of Medicurio to learn more about the world's most commonly used psychoactive drug.
I ended off with saying how caffeine has a variety of medicinal uses, but didn't really go in depth. If you would like to learn more, continue reading.
Caffeine as an adjuvant painkiller: Scientists aren't too sure how caffeine can boost the effects of various NSAIDs, but they have a few possible theories: caffeine may slow down the breakdown of NSAIDs, resulting in longer duration of their effect; block pain neurons that use adenosine as a neurotransmitter; or change a person's mood so that even though there is pain, the person doesn't really care about it. 2-Minute Neuroscience: Caffeine
Caffeine is the most widely-used mind-altering substance in the world. Although it's not completely clear how caffeine causes the stimulant effects it's well-known for, it's thought most of those effects are traceable back to its action as an antagonist at receptors for the neurotransmitter adenosine. In this video, I discuss how that antagonistic action may lead to arousal and wakefulness.
TRANSCRIPT:
Welcome to 2 minute neuroscience, where I simplistically explain neuroscience topics in 2 minutes or less. In this installment I will discuss caffeine.
Caffeine is a stimulant drug and the most widely-consumed mind-altering substance in the world. It belongs to a class of compounds known as the methylxanthines, and is commonly found in a number of natural sources including the seeds of co...

A2A Adenosine receptor (with sound)
Two structural forms of A2A adenosine receptor, in its active, agoist-bound form and inactive, antagonist bound form are compared and their differences in their transmembrane helix arrangement are discussed. In addition, there is an antibody acting as an inverse agonist, stabilizing the inactive form of the receptor. The complex structure with the antibody shows how the antibody interacts with the cytoplasmic side of the receptor and stabilizes the ionic interaction near the cytoplasmic surface of the transmembrane helices.

Ultraslow Water-Mediated Transmembrane Interactions Regulate Activation of A2A Adenosine Receptor
Water dynamics in the apo form of A2A adenosine receptor. Water molecules inside transmembrane domain are highly dynamic in general; however, some of the water molecules are slow enough to mediate interactions around the key micro-switch residues depicted with stick representation. See the article by Lee et al. in the September 20 issue of Biophysical Journal (http://www.cell.com/biophysj/fulltext/S0006-3495(16)30658-0).

If you are interested, this Cochrane review (a paper that summarized the results of over 40 different studies) goes more in-depth into this phenomenon: http://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1002/14651858.CD009281.pub3/full
Caffeine can prevent neurodegenerative disease: There have been studies that found a correlation between drinking a few cups of coffee a day and slower onset of neurodegenerative diseases, but it is still unclear how caffeine does this. If you recall from the video, when adenosine stimulates A2A receptors on wake-promoting neurons, those neurons increase in activity. A2A receptors are also found on other neurons and also increase their activity. The idea is that in neurodegenerative diseases, these neurons actually begin to become overworked and die off. When caffeine binds to A2A receptors, it actually allows them to rest, making caffeine a neuroprotective agent. Keep in mind that this is just one theory and may be shown to be completely wrong in a few years time when new research shows an entirely different mechanism, but it is the best guess that scientists have now.

It belongs to a class of compounds known as the methylxanthines, and is commonly found in a number of natural sources including the seeds of coffee plants and the leaves of tea plants.
Most of the effects of caffeine are thought to be traceable back to its action as an antagonist at receptors for a neurotransmitter called adenosine. This means that caffeine binds to adenosine receptors and blocks adenosine from binding there and activating the receptor; thus, it reduces activity at the adenosine receptor. Although there are 4 subtypes of the adenosine receptor, most of caffeine’s effects are thought to be due to its antagonistic actions at the A1 and A2A subtypes. Its ability to promote wakefulness may be especially due to actions at the a2a receptor subtype.
How exactly the antagonism of the adenosine receptor translates into the effects of caffeine is not completely clear. Research suggests, however, that adenosine receptors are involved in promoting and regulating sleep. One way this is thought to occur is that adenosine activity can prompt the release of the neurotransmitter GABA, which then inhibits neurons involved in arousal and wakefulness. This promotes sleep, but when caffeine antagonizes adenosine receptors it opposes this action and causes arousal.
Adenosine receptors are also thought to be involved in reducing the activity of a number of neurotransmitters, including dopamine and norepinephrine, through methods ranging from inhibiting neurotransmitter release to affecting neurotransmitter binding. Thus, caffeine also blocks these effects, which may contribute to caffeine’s stimulating and reinforcing actions.
