Ernest Shackleton
Sir Ernest Henry Shackleton, CVO, OBE (15 February 1874 – 5 January 1922) was an Anglo-Irish explorer who was one of the principal figures of the period known as the Heroic Age of Antarctic Exploration. His first experience of the polar regions was as third officer on Captain Robert Falcon Scott’s Discovery Expedition, 1901–04, from which he was sent home early on health grounds. Determined to make amends for this perceived personal failure, he returned to Antarctica in 1907 as leader of the Nimrod Expedition. In January 1909 he and three companions made a southern march which established a record Farthest South latitude at 88°23'S, 97 geographical miles (114 statute miles, 190 km) from the South Pole, by far the closest convergence in exploration history up to that time. For this achievement, Shackleton was knighted by King Edward VII on his return home.

Gustave Albin Whitehead, born Gustav Albin Weisskopf (January 1, 1874 – October 10, 1927) was a German immigrant to the US and an aviation pioneer who designed and built engines and very early aircraft in which he reportedly made powered flights more than two years before the Wright brothers. He did most of his aviation work from about 1897 to 1911, but gained only modest attention. In 1901 a few newspapers reported that he made several flights in Connecticut that year, and he claimed a much longer flight in 1902. Publicity soon faded when he did not repeat the reported feats. His name and work lapsed into obscurity until a 1935 magazine article and subsequent books spotlighted his reported flights and sparked a vigorous "first flight" debate among aviation buffs, enthusiasts, historians and pioneers—including Orville Wright—that has lasted ever since. Publications in the 1960s and 1970s, and the research associated with those publications, have increased knowledge of and interest in Whitehead.

Herbert Clark Hoover (August 10, 1874 – October 20, 1964) was the 31st President of the United States (1929–1933). Hoover was a professional mining engineer and author. As the United States Secretary of Commerce in the 1920s under Presidents Warren G. Harding and Calvin Coolidge, he promoted government intervention under the rubric "economic modernization". In the presidential election of 1928, Hoover easily won the Republican nomination, despite having no previous elected office experience. To date, Hoover is the last cabinet secretary to be directly elected President of the United States, as well as one of only two Presidents (along with William Howard Taft) to have been elected President without electoral experience or high military rank. The nation was prosperous and optimistic at the time, leading to a landslide victory for Hoover over Democrat Al Smith.

Millard Fillmore
Millard Fillmore (January 7, 1800 – March 8, 1874) was the 13th President of the United States, serving from 1850 until 1853, and the last member of the Whig Party to hold that office. Gatling 1874
An animation of a 10-barrel .45 cal 1874 Gatling gun, with 240 round Broadwell magazine. This gun was sometimes called the Camel gun, after some imaginative advertising. Earlier models of Gatling gun were heavy and difficult to transport across rough terrain. In 1872, Gatling patented a shorter lock design, which allowed a shorter and lighter firing mechanism, and with short barrels, a light Gatling could be transported by infantry and mounted on a tripod (or a Camel!). The firing pin of the lock runs through the lock ending with a knob. As the gun turns, a lug at the base of each lock runs in a racetrack which drives it forwards and pulls it backwards. Just short of the firing point, the firing pin knob is captured in a groove, so that as the lock continues forwards, the firing pin is held back and compresses the firing spring. Visit us: bit.ly The original Sharps rifle, patented in 1848 by Christian Sharps, was loaded with a linen cartridge and percussion primer. The sturdy action of Sharps rifles made them faster and easier to load than conventional muzzleloaders. In 1859, the US Navy placed the first military order for 900 of the single shot rifles. That same year, John Browns raiders carried Sharps carbines at Harpers Ferry. And when the Civil War began, carbine versions were ordered for the cavalry. After the war, the American Rifle Team used Sharps rifles, adapted to fire metallic cartridges, to win the first international long-range rifle match. In 1874, after 700 Comanche warriors attacked 30 buffalo hunters in the Texas panhandle, the hunters used their Sharps rifles to exact a punishing toll. By the early 1880s, the long-range models had become the favorites of professional buffalo hunters because of their long-range capability. Le Api (The Bees) (1874) is as much a character study of the performer as it is of bees. Considered virtually unplayable because of its daring writing, this oboe piece can only be performed by a virtuoso that has mastered the skill of circular breathing (storing air in the mouth to keep the sound going while taking quick breathes through the nose). Pasculli is considered "the Paganini of the oboe" and Le Api was written as one of three virtuosic studies for the oboe, composed before Rimsky-Korsakov's Flight of the Bumble Bee. Romaine Brooks (1874-1970) From Wikipedia Birth name: Beatrice Romaine Goddard Romaine Brooks (May 1, 1874 December 7, 1970), born Beatrice Romaine Goddard, was an American painter who specialized in portraiture and used a subdued palette dominated by the color gray. Brooks ignored contemporary artistic trends such as Cubism and Fauvism, drawing instead on the Symbolist and Aesthetic movements of the 19th century, especially the works of James McNeill Whistler. Her subjects ranged from anonymous models to titled aristocrats, but she is best known for her images of women in androgynous or masculine dress, including her self-portrait of 1923, which is her most widely reproduced work.[1] Brooks had an unhappy childhood with an emotionally abusive mother and a mentally ill brother, which by her own account cast a shadow over her whole life. She spent several years in Italy and France as an impoverished art student, then inherited a fortune upon her mother's death. Wealth gave her the freedom to choose her own subjects, and she often painted people close to her, such as the Italian writer and politician Gabriele D'Annunzio, the Russian dancer Ida Rubinstein, and her partner of more than 50 years, the writer Natalie Barney. Although she lived until 1970, she painted very little after 1925. His technique was immense and his art suave and masterly. This is his 1928 recording of the treatment of themes from Strauss's Blue Danube Waltz by Schultz-Evler. This recording even today remains probably the very finest rendition of this famous virtuoso work ever laid down.
