Police protest actions wrong: Bandt

Greens MP Adam Bandt has criticised the actions of police and council workers who stripped a young woman participating in a protest today.


"Stripping a woman in public is inappropriate and should not be condoned by Melbourne City Council or Mayor Robert Doyle", Mr Bandt said.


"This was a peaceful protest. Surely police have better things to do with their time and taxpayer dollars."


"The Lord Mayor Robert Doyle has created this confrontation and the authorities have handled it badly from the start."


"We should be closing the gap between rich and poor - that's what these protesters are saying."

There is a dental crisis in Australia. A third of Australians say they cannot afford to see a dentist due to the cost. Half a million Australian’s are on waiting lists to see a dentist, with the average wait 27 months and in some cases up to 5 years. It’s time to make dental part of medicare - and we need you help to show that the Greens have the plan to make it happen.

"Next Tuesday the Government will try to change the Migration Act to get around the High Court decision. They want laws that would allow them to expel refugees to Malaysia, without binding human rights protections. Join me and other supporters this Sunday to doorknock Melbourne residents in support of a compassionate approach to refugees."

Greens MP Adam Bandt has said Opposition leader Tony Abbott is showing a "mean and nasty streak" in refusing Craig Thomson a parliamentary pair to attend the birth of his child.‬‪


"Mr Abbott is showing he has a real mean and nasty streak" Mr Bandt said today.‬‪‬‪


"Whatever questions Craig Thomson may have to answer, and however serious the votes are in the next few weeks, there must always be room for compassion and fairness."

Melbourne deserves top spot: Bandt

Greens MP Adam Bandt has hailed Melbourne's securing of the title of the world's most liveable city, saying it deserves the top spot.


But Mr Bandt cautioned that big investments in public transport, other infrastructure and greening the city were needed if Melbourne was going to stay in front.


Melbourne claimed the title of the world's most liveable city in the Economist Intelligence Unit's latest survey, beating Vancouver.


"Melbourne deserves top spot", Mr Bandt said.


"There is no city in the world I would rather live in."


"But there is much more to do if we are to build on Melbourne's liveability."


"We need big investments in public transport and other infrastructure."


"And we need to keep going with efforts to improve our sustainability and green our streets and homes."


"We also need to remember that there are many people doing it tough who wouldn't agree with the ranking and we need to be doing more to look after them."


 

Abbott challenged on Tassie insult

Greens Leader Bob Brown has challenged Tony Abbott's insult about Labor Green cooperation being a disease which began in Tasmania and is spreading to the mainland. "He is putting down most Tasmanian voters, but then he would, wouldn't he?" Senator Brown asked.


"Tony Abbott's admitted 70 billion dollar policy debt would be far worse than a disease, it would be death to hundreds of thousands of jobs, small businesses and to health, education and other services in Tasmania and around Australia," Senator Brown said.


"One thing Abbott won't do is debate Greens politics with me. He runs a mile ever time I suggest it," Senator Brown added.


"In other times Tony Abbott would have called the Suffragettes a disease," Senator Brown added.
