1 Minute: A Vimeo Weekend Project
With the chaos of everyday life consuming our senses, it is nice to sit back and enjoy moments and experiences that are often overlooked. This project aims to study the forgotten moments and times in life that we often pass by without acknowledging. This weekend, capture the brevity of something weird and wonderful, like this little wasp that came back from the dead!
The rules? Well, it's pretty simple:
-Video must be exactly one minute long
-No camera movement (no panning, tilting, etc)
-No editing whatsoever (no titles, no music)
-Tag with '1 minute'
-Add to the Weekend Project Group and the 1 Minute Group
All submissions are due on Tuesday, November 22nd at 11:59 PM (EST).
Please remember that only videos made specifically for this project will be considered. All submitted videos must be approved by the Vimeo Staff before appearing in the Weekend Project Group, so don't worry if your video does not show up at first, we'll get to it, promise!
The winner of this contest will get a free Plus account, or if you're already a Plus member, we're going to let you gift the Plus to whomever you choose (along with an extra 2.5 GB of upload space)! The runner-up will receive an extra 1 GB of upload capacity whether Plus or not. -
Take a Stand Against Online Censorship
Today, Congress held hearings on the PROTECT IP Act and the Stop Online Piracy Act (SOPA), two bills that would give the power to the government and content owners to censor and block websites that host even just one piece of content that allegedly infringes a copyright. The video below addresses the Senate version of the PROTECT IP Act, but a much more severe House bill was just introduced and is set up to pass soon if we don't take action NOW. These bills threaten the very essence of the web and the communities that have risen from it.
PROTECT IP Act Breaks The Internet by Fight for the Future
Please stand with us to fight this legislation geared toward stifling free speech and innovation online.

One Day on Earth, a Global Community Video Project
Greetings, fellow citizens of Earth! Thirteen months ago, on 10.10.10, Vimeans from all over the world participated in the massive One Day on Earth project. It was a huge success that brought together people from every single country, creating an archive of over 3000 hours of video. We're doing it again this year, on 11.11.11, and we're encouraging the entire Vimeo Community to participate! That means you!
The goal of One Day on Earth is to capture all aspects of life here on our Pale Blue Dot, from love and beauty to sadness and tragedy. Last year, filmmakers shot a whole range of subjects: a daughter curling her mothers hair, a family's apple-picking adventure, the remote corners of tropical locations, everyday life in the busiest cities, amongst many, many diverse stories. This year the global story is only missing your voice!
Footage shot this year will be compiled, archived, and made available to filmmakers, allowing anyone to create their own interpretation of life on Earth. Ultimately, One Day on Earth will have its own feature length film (you can watch the trailer here) that will premiere down the road. If you need a little inspiration, check out Enrico's submission entitled Human Nature, which deals with one aspect of our future here on Earth.
Thanks to One Day on Earth's partnership with the United Nations, the feature film created from last year's submissions is set to premiere around the world in late February 2012, more info here. Select footage from this year's project will also be shown at the February premiere.
Sign up on the One Day on Earth site and pick a cause or group to participate in. If you already have a Vimeo account it will automatically get linked up when you upload your footage. So get ready to record this Friday, all you need is a camera (with fresh batteries!) and your imagination. Go forth and capture! -
Join the Global Video Capture on 11.11.11
Dear Vimeo Community,
You may have heard in recent news that there are now over 7 billion people on the planet. That's a big number considering each has a unique story and perspective to share. Luckily, there's a global project that began on Vimeo to help share all those moments. It is with great joy and privilege that we remind you of the year's largest universal video capture project, One Day on Earth (ODOE). This Friday November 11th, 2011, people from all over the world will capture their experiences to share. Last year on 10.10.10 (October 10th, 2010), Vimeans came together through the ODOE project and filmed in EVERY single country in the world on the same day, creating over 3000 hours of shared footage and a feature film-
This year we're doing it again, so get your camera batteries charged up, clean out those memory cards, and make sure your lens is smudge free. It's time to capture footage from all over this beautiful blue marble called Earth! Signing up is easy, just create a profile on the One Day On Earth site and it will automatically link to your Vimeo profile. Share your world with us this coming Friday. We want to see it all, whether it's the natural wonder of your part of the planet, a portrait of your urban landscape, or a glimpse at the drama of human life on Earth.
Also, those of you who participated in last year's universal capture event (10.10.10) can now answer the long awaited question of "where will last year's film be screened?" This is big- ODOE just announced that they will be partnering with the United Nations to screen the film in EVERY country in the world on the same day in late February. As quoted from an official United Nations press release, "...the producers plan to screen the film in both theaters and venues of cultural and historic significance." For more information, check here. To make sure as many of us can be part of this historic screening as possible, One Day on Earth will also screen media shot on 11/11/11 as part of this Global Screening.
Through partnerships with the world's largest nonprofits, the diversity of the shared archive promises to be even more impressive than last year. Over 60 non-profit organizations, including 300+ United Nations country offices and 80+ Red Cross Red Crescent National Societies, are involved in this year's global capture. Such participants are encouraged to film for a cause and document perspectives on important local and global issues, which will then be shared with the long list of One Day on Earth non-profit partners. Check out the causes and collaborate sections of their website and be inspired to make an impact with your 1 day video contribution. All media recorded on 11/11/11 will be shared by those that participated (non-commercial use/with credit).
My friends, please join us as we all take part in the world's largest filmmaking collaboration. For questions about the project, feel free to post to this forum thread or visit the One Day on Earth site-

This Week in Vimeo! Oct. 31st
What does autumn mean here in the Vimeosphere? Lonely creatures, ominous pianos, and creepy woodlands abound, my friends. Here's a tasty sampling of what we've been feelin' this week in Vimeo, Halloween style!
Let's start off this video jaunt with Every Night by Charles Huettner. Equal parts spooky and strangely adorable, this animation perfectly embodies the season's knack for unearthing all the things that go bump in the night.
Now that there's a bit of a shiver sneakin' up your bones, check out Chloe And Attie by DOMOGENEOUS. This short manages to cram a whole Halloween's worth of suspense into a mere 8 minutes. The film above was made in 2009, and the team has been preparing to green-light a feature length script ever since. We can't wait to see it!
What is it about those ivory keys that makes ones heart beat a little faster? The Piano. .||.|.||.|.|.||. by Matthew Brown brilliantly harnesses the tension of this classically unnerving instrument.
Are you sufficiently goosebumped? Mission accomplished! Now get out there and make your own spine-chilling shorts. Don't worry, we've got lessons on both Scary Shooting Techniques and Special Effects to give your videos that extra spook-factor.
Enjoy your Hallows Eve!
Love,

Weekend Project - Beyond Planet Earth
Beyond Planet Earth: The Future of Space Exploration, a new exhibition opening at the American Museum of Natural History on November 19, envisions a future when humans explore the next frontier—our solar system and, one day, the Milky Way galaxy. Can you imagine an elevator to the Moon, a lunar habitat, or colonies on Mars? Many scientists believe that one day these are possible.
This weekend, we challenge you to create an out-of-this-world take on the future of space exploration—in three minutes or less. Where will we go? What will we discover?
Join the Beyond Planet Earth Video Contest group to submit your video and access a collection of space visualizations and video clips from the Museum’s archives, available for use in your video!
For this project:
- All video entries must be 3 minutes or less.
- Your video must begin with the contest slide, available for download here.
- All video entries must be submitted to both the Weekend Project Group AND the Beyond Planet Earth Video Contest Group by 11:59 pm EST on November 1, 2011.
The winning video will be featured on amnh.org and shown at SpaceFest! at the American Museum of Natural History on January 15, 2012
The winner will also receive:
- Four tickets to Beyond Planet Earth: The Future of Space Exploration at the American Museum of Natural History
- Tickets for two to the film events in the Dreams of Outer Space series, plus admission to the Space Tourists after-party, part of the Margaret Mead Film Festival at the Museum from November 10–13, 2011
- A $100 gift certificate to the Beyond Planet Earth shop
- A year-long Vimeo Plus membership!
Please remember that only videos made specifically for this project will be considered. All submitted videos must be approved by the Vimeo Staff before appearing in the Group, so don't worry if your video does not show up at first, we'll get to it, promise!
