A Little Off The Top

What my barber lacks in style and grace he makes up for in efficiency.

Look, I’m not picky about how my hair is cut. All I want is a semi-comfy chair, a barber that doesn’t try to talk to me about how my day is going or grind the arm of the chair with his crotch, and a decent price. That’s all I’m asking. So when I heard Murray down the street was offering cuts out of his garage for just a five spot and a silly signature on a liability waiver, you’re darn tootin’ I was interested.

I’ll admit, the first time you hear him rev the motor on one of those Black & Decker Corded Dual-Action Hedge Trimmers of his, it’s a little jarring. But I’ve known Murray for nearly fifteen years now and that guy is a master when it comes to landscaping. If he could turn an unruly bush into a cleanly shaped work of art with those 20” dual action, pre-hardened, rust resistant steel blades, I was pretty confident he could do the same for the hair on my noggin. All you gotta do is close your eyes and take comfort in that three-sided comfort handle that gives him plenty of control over where he swings the trimmer. Plus, he’s got one of those “Days Since An Accident” signs in his garage so you can tell if he’s been having a bad week or not. He doesn’t have to do that, you know. That’s how committed he is to your safety.

Is it unorthodox? Heck yeah, it is. Maybe even a little dangerous. But did I mention he only charges five bucks? And just look at me! This haircut may not get me into GQ, but it’s nothing a hat can’t cover until my next trim. Bandages? Yeah, okay, there’s a few, but I don’t call them that. I like to refer to them as my “badges of savings."
