vanity loves company

That image above was created by Champoy Hate, a FMLY favorite and a member of LA’s lovely Magick Orchids. Magick Orchids is just one of many rad musical projects that contributed to this new digital mixtape, Vanity Loves Company: Vanity Projects Autumn/Winter 2011. You’re welcome to download the mix via bandcamp, and feel free to share it with your friends!

Vanity Projects is a new label from LA. Earlier, we released my solo album Princess,  and later this month we’ll have the new album from Magick Orchids called Origins of Grinding. Many of the artists on this mix have upcoming releases through the label, although a few are just friends.

The mix includes totally new jams, completely unreleased until now, by Pizza!, So Many Wizards, and more… And like every good LA compilation, it has more than one collaboration with Michael Nhat.

pizza and beer and weed

our naked bros from chicago dropped their new album SHOULD BE today. this shit is so good. no one holds a groove like the nudey dudes. i’ve never enjoyed being blasted by the same chord progression for ten minutes in my hole life. i’m used to their live show, which is about half an hour long and consists of two, maybe three songs. the long, repetitive sludge translates perfectly onto the album. its astonishingly clean and listenable. i’m currently being blown away by the closing track, “Chill Pill”. this is by far the most out there NUDE SUNRISE track i’ve ever heard. do yourself a favor and download these jams and stay tuned, because they’ll be releasing two more songs (about half an hour of music) soon. and if you’re going to SXSW look up NUDE SUNRISE if you wanna get lost in a beer stained haze of guitar, fat ass synth, and sex drenched crooning. solo bowl

Geoff Geis – Superbowl B4 De-lete (feat. members of Moses Campbell)

Geoff Geis of Pizza!, Big Whup, LA Record, Seancarnage.com, FMLY (of course) and pretty much everything else in Los Angeles has been working on his solo act. He just released this new song featuring members from the beloved Moses Campbell and will be playing Thursday night at Pehrspace with So Many Wizards, Heller Keller and Bonossus And The Gnomefly. It gonna be an awesome cuddle of a show. Geoff continuously becomes more dynamic and pushes the boundries for linear music.

tyca #11

It may be raining right now in LA but it looks like it’s clearing up just in time for Thank you, Come again #11 so grab your instruments, bake some cookies, gather up your paint, and put your good vibe hat on and head down to Mary Hotchkiss Park on Saturday.

The purpose of this event is to strip a concert experience to its birthday suit. We have a performer in their most vulnerable state, an audience, and communal activities for all! Nothing will be handled but good vibes.
and of course BYOI (bring your own instruments):
There will be group jamming throughout the day. Bring your instruments and/ or whatever you have lying around your house. Washboards and tambourines encouraged.

This time around we have some very special guests including a special performance by Cloud Nothings and Geoff Geis (FMLY member, Pizza! slanger and Big Whup haver).

big whup 7″ giveaway contest!!

So y’all have certainly heard of a lil’ thing happening in LA next Saturday, May 1, called the “FMLY Ride.”  A recurring event that was “tested” last year and has now been institutionalized for 2010, this thing has already become a phenomenon. May’s installment looks great, featuring FMLY-favorite Professor Calculus as well as my pals Tempo No Tempo and Batwings Catwings.

Anyway, I have no intention of wastin’ anybody’s flavor: GO ON THIS RIDE!!!

However… the ride isn’t the only thing to do in LA on this particular Saturday night. In fact, May 1 is also the date of another very special event: the release of Big Whup‘s first-ever record, a 7″ featuring “B.O.N.I.Z.H.E.A.R.T.” and “Cover my Eyes.” The release show, which is taking place at the Smell, features other awesome things like performances by Pizza!, So Many Wizards, and 60 Watt Kid, DJ sets from Vice Cooler and Kyle Mabson, face-painting by PAUS LA,  and photo-boothing by the Summer Fun Time Society.

We’re offering a contest for you, FMLY readers, to get a free copy of the record if you come to the show.  To win, send an email with your name and the word “FMLY” in the subject line to bigwhup@gmail.com. We will pick a winner and two runners-up and notify them next Friday, April 30. Here’s a breakdown of the prizes:

First prize: A signed test-pressing of the Big Whup 7″.
Second prize: A signed homemade CD compiling all of Big Whup’s recorded work.
Third prize: A copy of “What is Happening,” a 23-track mixed CD released in 2009 by Big Whup Industries.

There is a catch, though: you have to be present at the Smell on May 1 to collect your prize!  But don’t worry, FMLY-riders: the show will last well into the night. You can probably do both.

Big Whup – Cover My Eyes
Pizza! – Bird Dreams
So Many Wizards – Nico
60 Watt Kid – We Come From the Bright Side
