Augusto Boal (April 16, 1931 - May 2, 2009) - PART 1
Augusto Boal (April 16, 1931 - May 2, 2009)
After spending the past 2 weeks re-reading his books- i didn't expect to be putting up an obituary instead of a vlog. I found out today that he died on Saturday.
I'd been tagged by KazukiSeirei a couple of weeks ago for another 5 facts tag, and i offered to vlog on something that really inspires me instead.
This is the man I intended to vlog on.
His work is truly inspirational to me, and I think, so very useful for the times we live in.
I studied the theatre forms of Augusto Boal for 2 years- doing practical street theatre, invisible theatre, community drama, Theatre in Conflict Resolution and other dramatherapy.
I wanted to vlog about him and in particular, Invisible Theatre and how it works to empower people and create real social and political change.
I've had a load of little synchronicites that kept pointing me back to his work in the past month, & learned i had missed a workshop he himself held here in London just 4 weeks ago... so it's a bit strange to hear he's died after I had been geeking out on his life's work when i hadn't looked at it in 10 years!
I'll vlog more personally on him next week maybe- somehow not in the mood right now
:-(

Legendary Brazilian theater director Augusto Boal died this past Saturday at the age of 78, of respiratory failure after a long bout with leukemia.
The founder of the concept of the Theater of the Oppressed, was deeply influenced by the philosophy of fellow Brazilian Paulo Freire and his Pedagogy of the Oppressed.
Boals goal was to use the stage as a platform for social dialogue and to ultimately change society. To that end, he developed methods which encouraged the participation of audience members as spec-actors, rather than spectators.
Boal also created hundreds of games and exercises for actors and non-actors alike in readying them in a rehearsal for real life. Working with theater professionals as well as rural Brazilian farmers, Boals work did not find favor with the military dictatorship that ruled Brazil from 1964 to 1985 he was jailed, tortured and exiled to Argentina. Undeterred, the theater director and playwright returned to Brazil after the fall of the dictatorship by which time his work in broadening the Theater of the Oppressed movement had spread internationally. Boal often visited the US and mentored many activists including Hector Aristizabal.

Augusto Boal, Forum Theater, Harvard-2003 (Part 1/5)
Augusto Boal visited Cultural Agents and Harvard University in 2003. This is a talk and realization of the Brazilian playwright/philosopher/literary critic/artist/politician's theory, Forum Theater through The Theater of the Oppressed. His idea deconstructs the dramatic dichotomy often assumed between spectator and actor. Instead, everyone present is a spect-actor, free to interrupt the drama, interpret, re-do, play with with different options. This fun communal performance affords everyone present options and agency and language of theater through which individuals and communities, especially the oppressed, can seek emancipation from the limitations and frustrations of their lives. The Harvard community and Cultural Agents were very receptive to Boal's provocative and fun visit. For more information, visit www.culturalagents.org/ .

A documentary by Ronaldo Morelos. Associate Producer Rod Wissler - Centre for Innovation in the Arts In 1994 Morelos spent 5 months in Rio de Janeiro, observing and documenting the work of Augusto Boal and the Centro de Teatro do Oprimido. It was the time of the Brazilian national elections. This time was also a year and a half into Boal's term as a Vereador (Councilor) of the Legislative Chamber of the Municipality of Rio de Janeiro. This documentary chronicles that time, the words and the work of Boal and his collaborators. It is a record of the work of a theatre maestro undertaking a daring and difficult experiment in overtly melding the concerns of theatre, therapy and politics. An account of a theatre company that is elected into public office. It is a story from the world of Theatre of the Oppressed. 53 mins, English

Invisible Activism - Boal's Theatre of the Oppressed PART 1 of 3
Augusto Boal was an innovative director from Brazil who developed new forms of theatre which act as powerful tools for the Activist, in the empowerment of people and the development of ideas and change.
It is theatre by the people for the people.
I wanted to vlog on one type of theatre style he developed as part of his 'Theatre of the Oppressed' way of working. This form being Invisible Theatre.
Its a hugely broad topic so forgive me for being long winded, but for those who ARE involved in activism, I wanted to explain it enough that you can walk away with ideas that can be used in your activism work.
This is Part 1- a breakdown of how invisible theatre works and the theory behind it.
Part 2 is an example of an Invisible Theatre piece that was performed in New York in the wake of 9/11
Part 3 is my story of a Boal style theatre piece and how it escalated into violence, but also REAL understanding and change.

Augusto Boal in Belfast
with Fernhill House Museum, Ballymacarrett Arts & Cultural Society, Prisoners Aid in East Belfast, An Cultúrlann and Phoenix Drama Society.
An extraordinary day in the life of the Brazilian theatre director, writer and political activist as he is taken on a whirlwind tour sampling Belfast life with all its contradictions, humour, and political diatribe spiced with Augusto's own story.
Augusto Boal is the founding father of Theatre of the Oppressed. In 1971 he was arrested at the Arena Theatre and imprisoned for working in opposition to the military regime in Brazil. After his release he exiled himself to Argentina where he resided until 1976. His efforts to transform theatre influenced artists and organisations for social change around the world. His techniques are enthusiastically followed by a number of community drama groups in Belfast.

Plus an exclusive interview with Augusto Boal on the theory of theatre in a community context by Tom Magill. Full transcription of Augusto Boal interview available at
