Homer Simpson on Hipsters

by Joey deVilla on November 14, 2011

Homer Simpson on the phone at his safety inspector desk: "Actually, I've come around to hipsters. It takes a lot of courage to all wear the same hat."

I missed last night’s Simpsons episode featuring guest star Anthony Bourdain but saw some screen captures; this one made me chuckle.

Here’s a clip:

Lest We Forget

by Joey deVilla on November 11, 2011

Poppy: "Lest We Forget"Here in Accordion City, the rest of Canada and other countries in the Commonwealth, it’s Remembrance Day, during which we remember the members of our armed forces who died in the line of duty. In the United States, it’s Veterans Day, and there are similar observances in other countries.

In honour of this day, I’m sharing Rick Mercer’s latest rant from his show, The Rick Mercer Report, in which he tells us to “remember to remember”. As with many of his rants, it’s poignant, funny and right on the money.

I’ll be marking today with the traditional moment of silence at 11:00 a.m., a reference to the signing of the Armistice at “the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month”.

Auto-Mobile Once More

November 8, 2011

After the window-smashing incident at the bingo hall (I’ll explain later) on Sunday, I dropped my trusty Honda CR-V (13 years old, only 130,000 km/81,000 miles on it) at the shop. A day and some hundreds of dollars later – window replacement was $330, but I also needed a fall/winter tune-up and an emissions test, [...]

Toronto Techie Dim Sum on 11/11/11, a.k.a. “Nerd New Year”

November 8, 2011

This Friday, November 11, 2011, can also be written down as 11/11/11, which is why a number of people have declared it “Nerd New Year”. Seeing as that’s the designation for the day, and seeing as we’re slightly overdue for another Toronto Techie Dim Sum, I’m calling one for this Friday at noon, Nerd New [...]

The Only Thing to Mar an Otherwise Perfect Birthday Weekend

November 7, 2011

That’s my car, as seen through what remains of my front passenger window. It happened yesterday afternoon in the parking lot of Delta Bingo, on St. Clair just east of Keele. The thief was after my GPS – a basic Garmin Nuvi 255, nothing fancy – which I normally put away when parking out at [...]

Getting News from NMA

November 2, 2011

These days, whenever I hear about some kind of breaking news, my first question is “Has it been turned into a wacky Taiwanese animation yet?” The irreverent animators at NMA TV cover everything from the Greek debt crisis… …to entertainment “news”… (I like how they worked Bieber’s “Baby, baby, baby” into the piece) …to human [...]

Masculine Hallowe’en Costumes for Your Effeminate Son

October 29, 2011

The Onion News Network’s fake morning talk show, Today Now!, has a high-larious segment that helps parents of “overly feminine little boys” take the “difficult problem” of choosing the right Hallowe’en costume. It features Anna Stephenson, author of Actually, He’s a Boy: A How-to Manual for Parenting an Effeminate Child, who shows concerned parents that [...]
