The goal of anarchistnews.org is to provide a non-sectarian source for news about and of concern to anarchists. It is also to provide a location for discussion about such news.
From Libcom - by Hieronymous
On November 2, 2011, Occupy Oakland — coming out of the international Occupy Movement — called for a General Strike. It was the third time a General Strike was attempted in Oakland. This first-hand account analyzes the event and situates it within the rich history of class struggle in California's Bay Area.
Oakland’s Third Attempt at a General Strike
Jessica Mitford wrote:
Oakland was still at the frontier, where the issues were sharper,
the corruption cruder, the enemy more easily identifiable…
There was nothing abstract about the class struggle in Oakland.

From Workers Solidarity Movement
The General Assemblies of the Occupy movement are creating a global experience in Direct Democracy. But this model did not come from nowhere - among other sources of influence is the Zapatista rebellion of southern Mexico, soon to enter its 18th year. Over almost two decades hundreds of rebel communities in Chiapas have used a General Assembly model to decide on how all aspects of life in the liberated zone will be organised. Despite their different circumstances to those faced by the majoity of the Occupy camps (in urban built up locations) there is still much that can be learnt from that experience.

What follows is a response to the article Occupy Nothing Take Everything by Cresencia Desafío from the second issue of The Sovereign Self, an egoist newspaper from Tacoma.
Does Cresencia wish to be a specialist in revolt and discontent?
She opens her article by claiming “the masses” are having a difficult time ignoring the reality of social control via government, corporations, and the ruling class. And that they now are mostly begging for “real democratic changes”, granted she admits a few are not begging. Her analysis of the masses which she apparently feels outside of is in reference to the recent Occupy movement. |

From Zine Library
We present a new guide on the ins and outs of computer anonymity and security.
From the introduction:
Every day we see new evidence of the State’s surveillance apparatus at work. Our cell phones are tracking devices; RFID chips threaten to make privacy impossible; surveillance cameras are on every street corner. Each new technological development brings with it a new encroachment into our lives and a new tool in the State’s arsenal of repression. With this techno-development increasing at an exponential rate, it is difficult not to feel lost, paranoid, or caged. We live in panopticon - even if the State’s eyes cannot be on us all at once, we can never be sure that we are not being watched at any given moment. This psychic omnipresence, coupled with the very real evidence of the surveillance apparatus’s repression of agents of revolt, creates paralysis. The threat of handcuff, court room, and jail cell stay our hand. |

Document aimed at clearing the media-driven confusion around anarchism / violence / disorder. A product of the Bay Area Anarchist General Assembly on 11/06/2011. We've been passing this flier out, with the attached cartoon image on the back at every GA this week, to a positive response. Provided here on anarchistnews.org for anyone facing similar misconceptions in their towns. Feel free to edit and add, after all it was hastily put together.
Long live the Oakland Commune! |

Last night, 2 good friends and members of the Richmond anarchist community were arrested during an Occupy Richmond march. Other people around them, posing no threat and in no way intervening were choked, slammed against cars, and even had a bicycle thrown at them by the Richmond Police. The events of last night were no anomaly, and instead are symptomatic of the unwarranted use of violence by police as a mainstay and default. Commanding officers were smug and relishing in the actions taken by their subordinates.
We are looking for more pictures, witness accounts, and video from the police violence last night. Please email them to sbhcopwatch@gmail.com

From KOMO News
SEATTLE -- Arson investigators are looking into a fire that was set at a Bank of America branch early Wednesday morning in Seattle's Madison Park neighborhood.
Police officers were called to the branch in the 4100 block of East Madison Street after a bank alarm was triggered around 2 a.m. When they arrived, they found the ATM engulfed in flames and more flames just inside the building. Firefighters were called to douse the flames.
Investigators say there was no sign anyone went into the bank -- it looks like someone set the fire outside then left. |

From Sprout Anarchist Collective
Sprout Anarchist Collective is a new anarchist collective/distro in the somewhat small Midwestern town of Grand Rapids, Michigan.
Throughout our years doing anarchist work, we've noticed that there is a real lack of introductory material available to folks. While there are some great introductions to anarchism out there, there are far fewer things looking at how we actually organize, learn from our past, and fight for our future. Specifically, there isn't a lot out there about how we form collectives, open social spaces, build communities of resistance, and truly learn from each other and our experiences.
To that end, we're putting together a distro that will collect existing and new "how to" guides that will help spread this throughout our community. We plan to eventually have a full-fledged catalog that folks can order from. |

From Anti-State STL
The following is a personal account and analysis of the first month of OccupySTL.
In hopes of depicting a more well-rounded picture of #OccupySTL, I’m going to try and quickly describe the last 2 or 3 weeks – warts and all. It seems initial excitement (and plain lack of time to describe more) might have helped form an image of the occupation (that well not untrue) might not have touched on the less glamorous aspects. If the summary is too long, feel free to skip around. You might find “WHY WE KEEP PARTICIPATING” and “THE FUTURE” to be less depressing. |

Communique from the R.O. Revolutionary Struggle; translated by boubourAs / actforfreedomnow! 2011. Although the action is 2 years old, the English translation was completed only recently and has not appeared on this site. Also 3 comrades of Revolutionary Struggle are currently on trial in Greece. Trial updates at actforfreedomnow. Communique:
On the 2nd of September in the early morning we attacked the temple of money, the stock exchange of Athens, by placing an expropriated van with 150 kilos of ammonium nitrate (AN/FO). This action is the continuation of a strategy of attacks with large quantities of explosives in order to hurt the infrastructure of multinational and local capital, a strategy initiated the 18th of February last year with the attempt on the central offices of Citibank on Nea Kifissia and continued with the bomb attack on the Eurobank branch on Vouliagmenis avenue, Argiroupoli on May 12th last year. |
