Last week we changed cars. The idea was to trade down from a 2-litre estate to something a bit more economical to run in terms of tax, insurance and fuel consumption. Being able to fit into smaller parking spaces would be a bonus. I set out with every intention of getting something like a Clio, [...]

Top Gear never had to put up with this

Chrystal got a new stereo for her car a while back (a pink one of course), but the shop had to order a special part in to fit it.  Over the last couple of weeks Jayne has had several increasingly disputatious1 phone calls to the shop about why it was taking so long. Today she [...]

Chrystal’s AA membership card arrived in the post today. I figured that the cost of adding her onto our membership was a small price to pay for some peace of mind when she is off in her little and ancient car.  The irony is that the card arrived today, a day after the car broke [...]

Those little moments you live for

Last wednesday Chrystal passed her driving test. By Friday she had found a little cheap runabout that she liked the look of so we went off to look at it.  During the drive there Jayne was driving and I was riding shotgun. Chrystal was in the back where we couldn’t see her. I happened to [...]

What a day! Chrystal passed her driving test, at the first attempt. Well… first attempt at the practical anyway: the theory took two bites. The first one was close though – I encouraged the girl by telling her that the result was not a fail but that she nearly-passed.

On Friday afternoon I got the phone call I had been half-expecting: the insurance company called to say that my car is not worth repairing. A shame really. With the very few miles I actually need to drive it is hardly worth having a car, but I got used to having this.

I finally got round to calling the insurance company after last week’s prang. I had been waiting to hear from the lady who went in to the back of me, but she hasn’t been in touch, so I decided not to wait any longer.

My tiny car is now a tiny bit smaller.  I set out today to get signatures on my nomination papers for the forthcoming local elections and got rear-ended at some traffic lights. I have had someone roll into the back of me in traffic queues before, with such slight a impact that there was not [...]

Damn Top Gear and damn Jeremy Clarkson! Until last week I had decided that, in the unlikely event of me winning the lottery, I would rather fancy having as a day-to-day runabout one of those new Fiat 500s. Although it would be hard to resist an Aston Martin, Merc or Jag in the garage I [...]
