THE STORY OF A SOUL
by Saint Thérèse of Lisieux
The Story of a Soul, better known to the English public as The Autobiography of St. Thérèse of Lisieux, was first published in 1899. Today it ranks amongst the greatest Christian spiritual classics and it has been translated into practically every well-known language. Almost every pope since its publication has proposed St. Thérèse's teaching to the faithful for their imitation—Pius XI declared her the greatest saint of our age and John Paul II made her a Doctor of the Church. |

THE DARK NIGHT OF THE SOUL
Saint John of the Cross
St. John takes us on a journey into ourselves, a journey of knowledge and self understanding, that encompasses our failings and imperfections. It shows us how in a place beyond words we can embrace sadness and grief, and seeking God, our lives will be turned around. He describes the "arid and dark night of contemplation" which leads us to "the knowledge of oneself and of one's misery." True knowledge of our self and of our condition shows how far we must go to find God, who our restless hearts incessantly seek. |

Beatification of Cardinal John Henry Newman |
|
|
|
Pope Benedict XVI beatified Cardinal John Henry Newman in a historic Mass at Cofton Park, Birmingham on the 19th September 2010. This great Victorian Catholic theologian, much loved around the world, was declared "Blessed".
As Vicar of St Mary's Oxford he exerted a profound spiritual influence on the Church of England. After joining the Catholic Church in 1845, he brought the Oratory of St Philip Neri to England, was the first Rector of the Catholic University in Dublin, and was made Cardinal by Pope Leo XIII in 1879.
To commemorate this special occasion, Baronius Press has released one of Cardinal Newman's great works - Meditations and Devotions. |

MEDITATIONS AND DEVOTIONS
To pray is to be a Christian, to be a Saint is to have prayed often. John Henry Cardinal Newman was a man of prayer and this book contains the culmination of his prayers and devotions, divided into three sections. The first and second parts contain the vocal prayers he wrote for public use, the litanies – the Stations of the Cross and short meditations. The long meditations in the third part of the book are intended for private use, which draw one into a deeper sense of intimacy with Our Lord.
The prayers are also a testament to his particular devotion to Our Lady with moving commentaries on her several titles from the Litany of Loreto. These are tender and profound, yet without any trace of sentimentality.
Newman's meditations are full of doctrine. Doctrine is the expression of Truth, and above all things, Newman longed to bear witness to the Truth. It is from the Scriptures, the Church Fathers and the living Church that Newman drew his doctrine, and in his meditations he made it his own.
A recent review of the title:
With preparations to beatify Cardinal Newman gaining pace, there has been a sudden slew of books devoted to his life and writings to match rising public interest and to properly prepare Catholics in Britain and elsewhere for this historic event. The market appears a little saturated and for this reason it is gratifying to be able to recommend a real gem, that offers great insight into the soul of the esteemed Victorian theologian.
Meditations and Devotions is a spiritual work and it consists of prayers and meditations written by the Cardinal at the Birmingham Oratory. The book begins with the oral and often repetitive prayers recited by the Cardinal in private before moving on to contemplative reflections on Our Lady.
If at the time of the Beatification you would like to pray like Cardinal Newman then this may be just the book for you.
