June 1864: The once powerful Confederate States of America lay in ruins, as the American Civil War rages out of control. CSS Alabama was a screw sloop of war built for the confederate navy, the ship was built in secret by John Laird Sons Co at Birkenhead UK in 1862. During her 2 year of service the vessel never laid anchor in a southern port. The model in the clip is currently being retored by Jackie Kane a member of the Greenock Model Yacht & Power Boat Club

This is one of my Civil War marches. The CSS Alabama was a commerce raider for the Confederate Navy. In her years of service, she sank over 60 ships. Songs about the Alabama were written from as Far away as South Africa. France allowed the Alabama to stay and be refitted and overhauled at Cherbourge, hence the clip of the French Anthem near the end. Alabama finally met her match when she was sunk off the coast of France by the USS Kearsarge. This march will soon be available at www.echelon-music.net This pics do not belong to me.

CSS Alabama was a screw sloop-of-war built for the Confederate States Navy. On 11 June 1864, Alabama arrived in port at Cherbourg, France. One hundred and twenty years after Alabama's loss, the French Navy mine hunter Circe discovered a wreck in approximately 200 feet of water off Cherbourg, France. Rear Admiral Raphael Semmes was the commander of the Confederate war ship the CSS Alabama. The Raphael Semmes House was built by its first owner, Peter Horta, in 1858. The structure was purchased in 1871 by the citizens of Mobile and presented to Raphael Semmes. Semmes lived here until his death in 1877. Another great (out-of-print) boeremusiek number from Die Oudag Boere-Orkes (The Old Timey Boer Orchestra). The Alibama Polka ostensibly refers to the visit of the CSS Alabama, a Confederate raider which visited Cape Town during 1863. The Alabama made such an impression on the people of Cape Town and in particular the local "coloured" community that they wrote a song, "Daar Kom die Alibama" (There comes the Alabama) which became an instant hit, and is still frequently sung today.
