The Jule Collins Smith Museum of Fine Art at Auburn University will open an exhibition of Haitian art, "Lespri Endonptabl: Selected Works from the Winslow Anderson Collection of Haitian Art at the Huntington Museum of Art," that will be on display from Aug. 20 through Oct. 29 in the Noel and Kathryn Dickinson Wadsworth Gallery and the Chi Omega–Hargis Gallery. "Lespri endonptabl," Haitian Creole for ‘the indomitable spirit,' is an exhibition of 32 objects produced in Haiti between 1945 and 1990 depicting themes of everyday life, landscape, flora, fauna, agriculture, folklore and Voodoo. The museum will co-sponsor a series of lectures and films beginning in September in conjunction with the exhibition. The first lecture is Sept. 8 at 5 p.m. and features professor Donald Cosentino from UCLA's Department of World Arts and Culture, International Institute, as he speaks about "Vodou Spirits in Haitian Art."

DAVID HIRSON’S "LA BÊTE"
at Telfair Peet Theatre

Hirson’s comedy of contemporary sensibilities viewed through a neoclassical frame opened on Broadway in 1991. The play is set in the time of the 17th century playwright Moliere, whose work inspires both the action and Hirson’s lyrical, rhyming script. Elomire is the head of a theatre troupe whose wealthy patron has demanded that they collaborate with the street performer Valere, bringing about a clash of high art and lowbrow entertainment. “The neoclassical period was all about rules, structure, the unities,” says director Daydrie Hague. “Elomire, whose very name is a play on Moliere‘s, represents those qualities and really embodies truth in language, dramatic form and content-what we might call high art. Valere breaks those rules and brings chaos, excitement, humor, even danger to the process; in short, entertainment value.” La Bête features scenic and lighting design by Fehreshteh Rostampour, costume design by Tracy Oleinick, and sound design by Kelly Walker. The cast is comprised of Madeleine Koon, Marcus Clement, Roxanne Gatian, Taylor Galvin, Spencer Hardy, Eli Jolley, Perry Jones, Garrett Keller, Houston Mahoney, Sarah Jean Peters, Anna Claire Walker, and Ben Young III. Meghan McCarthy and Kaye Stucky will be performing in the pre-show. Tickets are free to Auburn University Students and $15 for the general public.

Check out our Girl Scout Silver project by Beth Prior. She worked on phase two of the Songbird Observation Center and built some much needed benches for all over the Preserve. This film is a vivid, dynamic Southern coming-of-age drama, takes place in the transitional space between high school and college, when life seems to be all questions and no answers, and the future is scarily wide open. The Jule Collins Smith Museum of Art and the Honors College at Auburn University will host performances by the International Opera Institute at the art museum. Based in Palm Springs, Calif., the International Opera Institute is a charitable and educational performing arts company whose mission is to "increase the awareness, appreciation and understanding of opera, as a classical art form in all segments of society, engaging in outreach programs with schools and the public." Under the direction of its founder and artistic director Rose Kingsley, an internationally prominent dramatic soprano, the institute presents full operas, concerts, master classes, workshops and lectures. "Rose Kingsley has planned quite the performance for the Auburn community," said Jim Hansen, director of the Honors College. "On the stage in the auditorium of the museum, a cast of eight singers from the I.O.I., including Madame Kingsley herself, will perform the opera 'Cavalleria Rusticana' by Masgani." As an encore, Kingsley and two of her lead sopranos will perform a feature of "Duets and Solos From Opera to Broadway." The event also features a performance from the institute's "The Three Tenors," modeled after the performances made famous by Placido Domingo, José Carreras and Luciano Pavarotti. Join Dr. Todd Steury and graduate students for this program and demonstration by these amazing dogs- the only ones allowed at the preserve. The purpose of this project is to train former bomb detection dogs to find plant and animal species, or their sign, in the field for the benefit of ecological research, management, or conservation. They have dogs that have been trained to find endangered animals, invasive animals like the reticulated python, fawns, and pine tree fungus. Meet at the amphitheater. Admission is $2 for members, $3 for non-members.

"On the Tracks" is a Biannual Food & Wine Festival held on Friday Night at the Historic Downtown Opelika, Alabama from 6pm 'til Midnight. Our first ten events drew hundreds to Historic Downtown Opelika for this outdoor event. Food vendors lined the street, as live music was performed from a stage in the middle of the Railroad Avenue. A wine tasting trail took participants through quaint shops and galleries. The private corporate tables drew friends and co-workers together for an elegant night of fun. Entrance, food and beverages are priced accordingly. Trail tickets are available online or on the night of the event.

Tickets $5/person - available at gate The Southeastern Raptor Center will again host its annual birds-in-flight raptor programs on Fridays before Auburn University home football games. "Football, Fans and Feathers" kicks off Sept. 2 at 4 p.m. in the 350-seat Edgar B. Carter Educational Amphitheater on Raptor Road off Shug Jordan Parkway. During "Football, Fans and Feathers," visitors learn about the residents of the Southeastern Raptor Center. Hawks, falcons and eagles will be free-flown from flight towers allowing guests to see these raptors flying close. Admission is $5 each and registration is not required. For school groups of 25 of more, admission is $3 a person. For information about school groups, call (334) 844-6943. Children under three are admitted free. Other dates are Oct. 28; and Nov. 18 and 25. Roadside signs mark the program's location on the day of each show. Raptor Road is a gravel road with a red gate off Shug Jordan Parkway just north of the Wire Road intersection. All birds used in the programs are permanent residents that are non-releasable due to prior injuries or human imprinting. The Southeastern Raptor Center is part of the Auburn University College of Veterinary Medicine. The center's mission is to rehabilitate injured or orphaned raptors, and to educate the public.

"Lespri endonptabl," Haitian Creole for ‘the indomitable spirit,' is an exhibition of 32 objects produced in Haiti between 1945 and 1990 depicting themes of everyday life, landscape, flora, fauna, agriculture, folklore and Voodoo. The museum will co-sponsor a series of lectures and films beginning in September in conjunction with the exhibition. The Chick-fil-A at TigerTown is hosting the 2nd annual Chick-fil-A TigerTown “Clash for Cash” Bowl during the week leading up to the “big game.” Beginning on Monday, October 17nd and continuing through Saturday, October 24th, Chick-fil-A will showcase its school spirit with numerous activities and events for the local high schools. Half the restaurant will be decorated in Tiger blue and white, the other half in Bulldog red and black. Fans of each high school are invited to enjoy a meal at Chick-fil-A and help raise money for their respective school. Throughout the week guests will be asked to leave their receipts behind in a box designated for each school. At the end of the week the sales will be tallied and Chick-fil-A will make a donation to the high schools based on how much they each raise. Around 20,000 people make their way to Loachapoka, a city just outside of Auburn, for this day of sweetness. People from all over the U.S. stop by. Visitors can taste all kinds of syrup, honey and jams made locally. You can learn about the Loachapoka history and how the earliest settlers used sorghum and ribbon cane to make sugar. Kids and adults can watch locals dressed as settlers explain how syrup is made from sugar cane and even demonstrate right before your eyes. Take a pony ride, or grab a Polish sausage with grilled peppers and onions. It’s almost like a country fair, but with just the food; and who wouldn’t want to come out and try some all of these delicious sweet and savory bites. And when you feel too stuffed to eat anymore, rest your legs and tap your feet to some live folk music. The Syrup Sopping Day is a day in our area that you don’t want to miss!

The Jule Collins Smith Museum of Fine Art at Auburn University will open an exhibition of Haitian art, "Lespri Endonptabl: Selected Works from the Winslow Anderson Collection of Haitian Art at the Huntington Museum of Art," that will be on display from Aug. 20 through Oct. 29 in the Noel and Kathryn Dickinson Wadsworth Gallery and the Chi Omega–Hargis Gallery. "Lespri endonptabl," Haitian Creole for ‘the indomitable spirit,' is an exhibition of 32 objects produced in Haiti between 1945 and 1990 depicting themes of everyday life, landscape, flora, fauna, agriculture, folklore and Voodoo. The museum will co-sponsor a series of lectures and films beginning in September in conjunction with the exhibition. The first lecture is Sept. 8 at 5 p.m. and features professor Donald Cosentino from UCLA's Department of World Arts and Culture, International Institute, as he speaks about "Vodou Spirits in Haitian Art."

The Chick-fil-A at TigerTown is hosting the 2nd annual Chick-fil-A TigerTown “Clash for Cash” Bowl during the week leading up to the “big game.” Beginning on Monday, October 17nd and continuing through Saturday, October 24th, Chick-fil-A will showcase its school spirit with numerous activities and events for the local high schools. Half the restaurant will be decorated in Tiger blue and white, the other half in Bulldog red and black. Fans of each high school are invited to enjoy a meal at Chick-fil-A and help raise money for their respective school. Throughout the week guests will be asked to leave their receipts behind in a box designated for each school. At the end of the week the sales will be tallied and Chick-fil-A will make a donation to the high schools based on how much they each raise. The “Eat Mor Chikin” Cows will present a check to Opelika and Auburn High Schools during the pre-game show on Tuesday, October 21st.

Tickets $5/person - available at gate The Southeastern Raptor Center will again host its annual birds-in-flight raptor programs on Fridays before Auburn University home football games. "Football, Fans and Feathers" kicks off Sept. 2 at 4 p.m. in the 350-seat Edgar B. Carter Educational Amphitheater on Raptor Road off Shug Jordan Parkway. During "Football, Fans and Feathers," visitors learn about the residents of the Southeastern Raptor Center. Hawks, falcons and eagles will be free-flown from flight towers allowing guests to see these raptors flying close. Admission is $5 each and registration is not required. For school groups of 25 of more, admission is $3 a person. For information about school groups, call (334) 844-6943. Children under three are admitted free. Other dates are Nov. 18 and 25. Roadside signs mark the program's location on the day of each show. Raptor Road is a gravel road with a red gate off Shug Jordan Parkway just north of the Wire Road intersection. All birds used in the programs are permanent residents that are non-releasable due to prior injuries or human imprinting. The Southeastern Raptor Center is part of the Auburn University College of Veterinary Medicine. The center's mission is to rehabilitate injured or orphaned raptors, and to educate the public.

John James Audubon intended his compositions to convey information, not only about the fauna he represented, but also about their environments. He also provided detailed pictures of the natural landscape as well as the human mark laid upon it. This exhibition will study the observations Audubon made and recorded in the landscape backgrounds of his prints. This event is free and open to the public.

5TH ANNUAL HOWL-O-WEEN DOG COSTUME CONTEST
at 8th Street and Railroad Avenue

Bring out your pooch in their best dressed costume this Halloween! Registration is from 5 p.m. - 6 p.m. in front of Taylor Made Design. Canine Trick or Treating at local downtown merchants will begin at 5:00 p.m. Stores will have special dog treats available. The costume contest begins at 6:00 p.m. Prizes will be given for the best costumes!!! A supporter donation is $10 and allows your canine to walk in the parade. A V.I.P. or “Very Important Pooch” can be registered for $25. This ensures that your pup will be one of the first in line to show off their costume. YOu may also make a dog food donation in lieu of money. Pre-registration begins Monday, October 1, 2011 at Taylor Made Designs at 120 S. 8th St. Donations will support Rescue K911. Rescue k911 is a non-profit, no-kill organization dedicated to reducing overpopulation, abuse and neglect of domestic animals. They provide food, shelter and care for animals in need. For more information visit www.rescuek911.com. This year Howl-o-ween will be a new experience ensuring that your dogs feel special and can enjoy the holiday as their own.
