Political Prisoner, Prisoner of War, Prison Rebel and Progessive Prisoners

SPECIFIC PRISONER SUPPORT CAMPAIGNS

Lynne Stewart - www.lynnestewart.org
Recently convicted on all charges and currently awaiting sentencing. Radical human rights attorney Lynne Stewart has been falsely accused of helping terrorists. On Tuesday, April 9, 2002, she was arrested and agents searched her Manhattan office for documents. She was arraigned before Manhattan federal Judge John Koetl. This is an obvious attempt by the U.S. government to silence dissent and install fear in those who would fight against the U.S. government's racism, seek to help Arabs and Muslims being prosecuted for free speech and defend the rights of all oppressed people.

International Concerned Family & Friends of Mumia Abu Jamal - www.mumia.org
Mumia is an award winning journalist on Pennsylvania's death row that the evidence says he didnt do. Don't just take our word for it, check it out yourself. Includes legal updates, specific support campaigns, Mumia's writings and more.

The National Coalition to Free the Angola Three -
http://www.prisonactivist.org/angola/

All three men -- Herman Wallace, Albert Woodfox and Robert King Wilkerson – fought for prison reform in
the early 1970s. As a result, they were targeted by prison officials who eventually framed them for crimes they did not commit. Each has remained principled and politically active in spite of their brutal, long-term confinement.

Ohio 7/ United Freedom Front - http://home.earthlink.net/~neoludd/ also
http://www.geocities.com/tom-manning/
In 1985-86, Raymond Luc Levasseur, Thomas Manning, Richard Williams - R.I.P., and Jaan Layman were tried and convicted for conspiracy and bombing unoccupied military and corporate facilities (there were no deaths/ injures). These United Freedom Front Actions were part of an effort to bring the public’s attention to corporate and governmental criminal activity in South Africa and Central America. Sentences ranged from 45 to 53 years in prison.  Contains writings, updates, and supporter info. Jaan Layman has an aswome new online zine that can be viewed here - www.4strugglemag.org.

Sundiata Acoli Freedom Campaign -
http://www.mumia.org/sundiata/

Sundiata is a Political Prisoner, a brilliant mathematician, artist and committed freedom fighter for the New Afrikan Nation. Ambushed on the New Jersey Turnpike with Assata Shakur and Zayd Malik Shakur, Sundiata has been unjustly incarcerated for 30 years. Contains writings and supporter updates. Find out more about Assata and the struggle to keep her free here www.assatashakur.org

Leonard Peltier Defense Committee - http://www.freepeltier.org/ also http://www.leonardpeltier.org/
Leonard Peltier, a citizen of the Anishinabe and Lakota Nations, is a father, a grandfather, an artist, a writer, and an Indigenous rights activist. He has spent more than twenty-six years in prison for a crime he did not commit. Amnesty International considers him a "political prisoner" who should be "immediately and unconditionally released."

In 1973 she was convicted of purchasing two boxes of handgun ammunition and was given a ten year sentence. After serving four years in Federal prison in Alderson, West Virginia, she was granted a furlough and did not return. The following eight years she was underground.
In 1985 Marilyn was recaptured and tried for breaching another wall - she was convicted of conspiracy for the successful escape of Assata Shakur from her New Jersey prison. (Assata remains active from her exile in Cuba). Marilyn and her codefendents Dr. Mutulu Shakur and Sekou Odinga were also convicted of conspiracy to commit "armed bank robbery" in support of the New Afrikan Independence struggle. In 1988 she was given another ten years in the Resistance Conspiracy case, for "conspiracy to protest and alter government policies (the invasion of Grenada, intervention in Central America) through use of violence" against government and military property. She has been in prison for 17 years, with a total sentence of 80 years.

Jeffery "Free" Luers - www.freefreenow.org
In June 2001, 23 year old forest defense activist Jeffrey "Free" Luers was sentenced to 22 years and 8 months in prison for the burning of three Sport Utility Vehicles (SUV's) in Eugene, Oregon. To make a statement about global warming, Free and a friend named "Critter" set fire to 3 Sport Utility Vehicles at a car dealership. Their stated purpose was to raise awareness about global warming and the role that SUVs play in that process. Both activists took measures to make sure that no one would be injured as a result of their action and scouted the location for months beforehand. An arson specialist later confirmed that the action did not pose any threat to people based on its size and distance from any fuel source. Despite the fact that this action hurt no one, caused only $40,000 in damages and the cars were later resold, Jeff was sent to prison for a sentence considerably longer than those convicted of murder, kidnapping and rape in Oregon state.

Dr. Mutulu Shakur - www.mutulushakur.com
In March 1982, Dr. Shakur and 10 others were indicted by a federal grand jury under a set of U.S. conspiracy laws called "Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organization" (RICO) laws. These conspiracy laws were ostensibly developed to aid the government in its prosecution of organized crime figures; however, they have been used with varying degrees of success against revolutionary organizations. Dr. Shakur was charged with conspiracy and participation in a clandestine paramilitary unit that carried out actual and attempted expropriations from several banks. Eight (8) incidents were alleged to have occurred between December 1976 to October 1981. In addition he was charged with participation in the 1979 prison escape of Assata Shakur, who is now in exile in Cuba. (the question of Dr. Shakur being charged with participation when in fact they alleged he masterminded her escape creates the true fact of cointelpro).

Zolo Azania - www.zoloazania.org and
http://www.prairiefire.org/Zolo/support.html
Zolo Azania is one of the numerous African-Americans who await execution as a result of a racist criminal justice system. Moreover he is a politically conscious activist, who at the time of his arrest and capture in 1981, was actively involved in the movement for the self-determination of African-American people. The fact that he defined himself as a New Afrikan and was committed to the liberation and independence of Black people within the borders of the U.S., directly influenced the way the police, the prosecution, and the Indiana courts denied him a fair trial and fanned the flames of prejudice to obtain the death penalty.
Zolo was sentenced to death after his conviction for a 1981 bank robbery and the killing of a Gary Indiana police officer who was fatally wounded in an exchange of gun fire with three men who fled from the bank. Zolo was not arrested at the bank, but miles away walking unarmed down the street. The prosecution intimidated witnesses, suppressed favorable evidence, presented false eye-witness and expert testimony, and denied him the right to speak or present motions in his own behalf. Zolos death penalty conviction was recently overturned (for a third time!) in May of 2005.

Matt Lamont -
http://www.freerampage.i8.com

Daniel McGowan - http://www.supportdaniel or  http://www.myspace.com/danielmcgowan
Another Green Scare defendant. Daniel McGowan is an environmental and social justice activist, facing terrorism related charges in federal court.

The above represents just a small fraction of the Political Prisoners/Prisoners of War languishing behind bars in Americas gulags today, not to mention the thousands of progressive prisoners, prison rebels and  jailhouse lawyers who stand in the face of oppression every day.

Please take the time to show these locked down brothers and sisters they are not forgotten!
