Paper Pushing

Because I want to support good journalism, especially on the web, I decided to subscribe to the New York Times. It costs $35 per month to subscribe to “All Digital Access.” That seemed pretty expensive, and I noticed a little promotion in the sidebar telling me that I could get the same access for free with a print subscription. It costs $14.80 per month to get the weekday edition delivered to your house, and they throw in online access for free. The only problem is that home delivery isn’t available in the area where I live. So now my friend John is going to get the Times delivered to his house, and I get a $240 per year discount on my digital subscription as a result.

The New York Times is a really smart paper, but that’s really dumb business.

So, it turns out that the voice recognition on the iPhone 4S is kind of amazing. I thought that it would be kind of cool to use it with WordPress so I give it a try and this is the result of that attempt. I even wrote the title and tags with my voice. I won’t correct any of the mistakes that it makes. Other than having to explicitly say each punctuation mark, it’s fairly natural. It’s only made a single mistake so far, so I’m going to stop here. I’ve got to say though; this definitely feels like living in the future.

Reblog: That’s New Orleans

Reblogged from: Albums Everyone Should Own:

I don’t know if you’ve ever been to New Orleans, but it is a magical place…as this 2009 video shows. “Jaran ‘Julio’ Green’s homegoing in the Treme neighborhood of New Orleans, La. He was 23 years old, father of a new born baby girl, killed on March 26, 2009. Loved ones danced on his casket, carried him thru his old neighborhood one last time.” I think I need to head back to New Orleans soon.  I don’t know about you, but when I go… I want my …

If you’ve never been to New Orleans this may seem shocking, but it’s an amazing demonstration of life in the city, the vibrance and culture that make it the greatest city in America despite the violence that makes it one of the most tragic.

Thanks, Steve

When I was five years old, I touched an Apple IIe for the first time and it changed my life. It made me fall in love with technology. And years later when I first used a Macintosh, I fell in love with design. For a shy, middle class kid growing up in suburban Alabama, the possibility of me growing up to become a technologist and designer was remote. But Apple’s example of good design and good taste inspired me to learn about subjects for which I had no teachers. And it’s where I came to appreciate the way design can dissolve the barrier between people and technology that they instinctively fear.

Every designer of my generation owes Steve Jobs a huge debt, one we can repay by creating work that would have withstood his intense scrutiny. Though I never worked for him, I’ve applied that test to my work throughout my career, and it’s one I’ll continue to use as long as these hands are still designing.
